★超强CG★ ★奔驰商业片 Mercedes "Clouds"★

Mercedes "Clouds"由 Mill 公司出品,片中真实的云层效果令人折服~~~他们在制作中采用了2D技术和3D技术融合的方式。Mill 公司还制作了很多其他很有效果的短片。据称这部短短一分多钟的特效片竟耗费了8个月时间研究云层的结构及形体变化。





Paul Denhard from the Mill talks about Escape Studios, dreadlocks and the new ‘Clouds’ spot for Mercedes

When Escape Studios graduate Paul Denhard was offered a job at the Mill, one of the world’s premier post production houses, he knew things were going to get interesting.

Paul had worked on a music video for Skint Records with one of the Escape tutors shortly after taking the ‘maya Comprehensive’ course, so he was no stranger to challenging projects. The music video required Paul to build a dynamics system for simulating dreadlocks on a CG character.

Faced with the problem he proceeded to read every book he could find on the subject.

“My computer science background definitely helped me out. I found the whole process hard work, but ultimately rewarding. I remember borrowing a book on MEL (maya’s Embedded Language) and maya’s API (Application Programming Interface) from the guys at Escape. They were really surprised. I think I was one of the only students to ever use it!

As a result of Paul’s outstanding work and positive attitude Escape Studios MD, Dominic Davenport, recommended him to Stephen Venning, Head of 3D at the Mill. Following several interviews Paul was offered a freelance position working on a series of O2 ads, before proving himself worthy of on-going work.

Paul has recently been working on the new ‘Cloud Gods’ TV spot for Mercedes (pictured).

“The ad is already out and has been well received. We’ve completed the 40, 60 and 90 second versions and are now working on some additional shots for the two-minute cinema version.”
As a member of the team working on the CG clouds they had to push maya’s fluid dynamics tools to the very limit.

“We were totally immersed in fluids, no pun intended! I don’t think there’s a single button or slider that we didn’t become familiar with. The nice thing about this project was that for the CG Cloud Gods we were only using maya. We used it to model, animate and simulate fluids for the clouds as well as render using the built-in Mental Ray feature.”
The majority of Paul’s current work is simulation based, using particles, fluids, MEL and rigid bodies. However, working in a commercials environment as part of a small team requires everyone to be able to turn their hand to anything.



That’s really the main reason I wanted to work in commercials. It’s true to say that I mainly do simulation stuff at the moment, but recent jobs have required me to do degrees of lighting, rendering, compositing, texturing, modelling and animating. You would never get this working in Film.”
Paul has a promising career ahead of him and although the work will be intense, he plans to take full advantage of every opportunity.

“I’m working in my favourite field for my favourite company. No complaints here!”
