Why Can Harsh Words Cause Extremely Severe Fault

Of the four speech karmas, the third one is harsh words. Talking about others’ shortcomings; speaking unpleasant words; as to those with incomplete sense faculties, laughing at their disadvantages by all means, such as deafness, blindness, dwarfism or fatty. All of these are harsh words, which just leave others sad and hurt.

The sin of harsh words is very serious. Because the moment one arouses hatred, which will destroy all the virtues, merits and good roots accumulated in his continuity of mind. You make him sad and angry, in turn he will ruin all of these, which means you will destroy all. This sin is very serious. So you must mind your own words, don’t talk about others’ disadvantages and shortcomings casually.

Some say “I’m just for his own good”. If you are really for his good, then you should observe whether you have the power to control him. Is there any karmic connection between you and him? If not, you will not only fail to correct him, but also make him angry and annoyed. If you already know the result of doing so but still do that, then you are guilty in a sense, and your motivation is not right.

What is the right motivation? It is the pure motivation, which is to benefit others instead of oneself. Just now, you have already known the other person involved can’t accept it, you can’t make it and there is no karmic connection between you two, but you still pointed out his faults with the excuse of doing it for him. Your motivation like this is already impure, so you will suffer bad karmic effects. Nobody can disguise or escape from karmas. Causes and effects are just like a scale, everything will be balanced well without a single mistake. So mind your own words and don’t hurt others casually.

Speaking ill of others incidentally appears nothing much, but the law of cause and effect never fails and you will suffer extremely in the future. There used to be a nun, who once cursed other nuns as “bitches”. As a result, she kept being reborn as a bitch in her following five hundred lives. Speaking a sentence incidentally maybe doesn’t mean much for the moment, but it has such a serious consequence.

I have told you that it is not easy to create such conduct karmas as killing, stealing or sexual misconduct, while it is easy to create such speech karmas unconsciously as lying, sowing discord, harsh words and worthless chatter. It is easier to create such mind karmas as greed, hurting or wrong views. Every thought is a cause of good or bad karma. Be aware! Once having spoken harsh words, you must confess.

Speak more pleasant words instead of harsh words and one can get good karmic retributions from life to life. Hearing pleasant words instead of harsh words, you will be pleased by others at any time, and how wonderful it is!
