Aviation regulators grounded budget carrier Tiger Airways Australia Saturday because it posed a "serious and imminent risk to air safety", throwing the travel plans of thousands of people into chaos.

Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) said Tiger's domestic services had been suspended with immediate effect following a series of incidents that had raised questions about its airworthiness.

The first grounding of an entire airline in Australian aviation history, the ban is for an initial five working days, after which officials can apply for a court-enforced extension to allow for further safety investigations.

A subsidiary of Singapore's Tiger Airways, Tiger Australia operates about 60 domestic flights a day, moving up to 9,000 passengers.

Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said about 35,000 people would be affected by the week-long ban, which he described as an "extremely regrettable" but necessary step.

CASA said it was considering applying for an extension and warned that Tiger's licence to fly was at stake, though that was "not so much in contemplation at this point".

"What we're looking at now is do we need more time to work on what response we're going to have to this situation, and if we do how much time, and putting an argument to the court to get that time," CASA spokesman Peter Gibson told AFP.

The engineers' union said Tiger was likely to remain grounded for "weeks".

"They have quite a way to go before they can satisfy the regulator that their aircraft are going to be in a fit state to fly," said union chief Steve Purvinas....

Statement from Tiger Airways Australia

MEDIA UPDATE STATEMENT FROM TIGER AIRWAYS AUSTRALIA – 15:00 HRS, 3 JUL 2011

Following the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia's (CASA) instruction to suspend Tiger Airways Australia's domestic services until next Saturday, 9 Jul 2011, please find following an update from the airline as of 3:00pm AEST 3 Jul 2011.

Tiger Airways Australia is making strong progress in reaching its passengers whose travel plans have been affected as a result of the industry regulator's decision. As of Saturday, 2 Jul 2011, evening flight cancellation correspondence has been sent to all passengers who had booked for travel today. Tiger Airways' customer support team is now in the process of advising booked passengers for the remainder of the week of the same and ticket sales for this period have also been temporarily suspended.

Affected passengers will be offered a full refund or credit for deferred travel. Customers can directly request their refunds through the Customer Service Portal at www.tigerairways.com (this will be a quicker option than sending written requests) or by contacting our call centre 03 9999 2888 where we have added more call centre staff, although please be aware that we are experiencing higher than normal traffic for obvious reasons.

We urge customers with bookings within Australia between now and 6:00am on Saturday, 9 Jul 2011, to not travel to the airport.

Once again we would like to offer our sincere apologies to all of our passengers for the inconvenience caused and reassure the Australian public that safety has and will underpin our operations at all times.

Tiger Airways continues to cooperate fully with the industry regulator and the week ahead will be a busy one as we continue to work with CASA to reassure them, resolve the concerns they have raised and aim to resume our services as quickly as possible.

The Tiger Airways Australian team and its parent company are absolutely committed to the airline's long term future in Australia. The airline has made a significant contribution to the domestic aviation market over the last four years, reducing air fares by 15% or more and thereby allowing more Australians to fly. This positive outcome has not come at the expense of safety and Tiger Airway's operational safety will never be compromised.

NOTE TO MEDIA – THE NEXT TIGER AIRWAYS MEDIA UPDATE WILL BE PROVIDED DURING MONDAY, 4 JUL 2011. ALL FURTHER RELATED QUERIES AT THIS TIME SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO CASA.

Please note: Tiger Airways' call centre is experiencing a high volume of calls at this time but the airline has added extra agents to help field the volume of calls.

Passengers are advised to monitor the website as it will be updated regularly throughout the week with further updates.

只是暂停至7月9号
