Michael Jackson Fans Bring Christmas to Forest Lawn
On December 3, a dozen MJ fans gathered at the Holly Terrace of theGreat Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Glendale to remember their idol. Theyhave designated the third of each month as their regular visitation daybecause it coincides with his September 3 funeral and entombment there.I've spent a lot of time in cemeteries but never with fans on apilgrimage, so joining them on their sojourn last week was a first forme. I was immensely touched by what I experienced, and it drove homefor me the reason why cemeteries are for the living.
The fans brought with them not only their own flowers and Christmasdecorations, but also dozens of holiday mementos of love (manyhandmade) from 90 other fans. Over 100 items in all, sent from acrossthe United States as well as Europe, Great Britain and the UK, Hungary,Jordan, Egypt, the Philippines and Malaysia. Among the packages werecards, small gifts, and ornaments which were placed on a whiteChristmas tree.
What's remarkable is that the holiday memorial drive was initiated onFacebook by fan Erin Jacobs just one week prior to the date of deliveryto Forest Lawn. Additional envelopes and packages earmarked for futuredelivery continue to flow in to the post office box donated by fanAntoinette Albert.
Judy Faass, a MJ fan from Colorado, sent a card, and gave me insight as to what her participation in the event meant to her:
I'm forever grateful to the ladies that made that happen! I live inColorado and it will be awhile before I can get to FL to visit withMichael. I was pleased to be given the opportunity to share in theremembrance and celebration on Dec 3. I feel his loss on a daily basisand grieving his loss has been very difficult. I lost my mom in 2006and I think the MJ situation brings up memories of her as well. Makesit much more difficult. Knowing that my card made it to MJ's RestingPlace brings more tears, but a small sense of closure as well.
Since I can't possibly cover every card and gift with this post, I'mhoping that anyone who sent something in reads this story and sharestheir thoughts and feelings in the comments area at the bottom of thispage.
An element missing from the groups' holiday decorating experience, onethat most people are afforded under normal circumstances, was beingable to personally place the items at Michael's sarcophagus because itis private and off limits to the public. Per Forest Lawn, currently noone is allowed to visit him unless accompanied by a Jackson familymember.
The items were delivered however, thanks to Forest Lawn securitypersonnel who took each and every token inside Holly Terrace while wewere there, and put them at the Ascension Windows alcove where Michaelwas entombed. We were able to catch glimpses of the area at the end ofthe hall when the door was opened.
The experience of seeing the grave of someone you care about isdifficult for many people, but is an essential part of the grief andhealing process, I believe. It's a fundamental part of acceptance ofloss, the reality check needed to move forward. This is why, after muchthought, I opted to include in this report visuals of his sarcophaguscaptured that day with still and video cameras, taken from outside thebuilding through the doors.
The world may be getting a better view of it soon enough anyway. Wordhas it that Michael's brothers were there last week with a camera crewand director. But for now, this is my contribution to satisfying publiccuriosity and hopefully providing a measure of comfort for those whoneed to see such images.

As a writer, I hate to admit to not being able to find adequate wordsto convey what I have witnessed and felt, so thank goodness forYouTube. Here is my interpretation of the day's events and the lovelyfans I spent time with. I chose MJ's song "You Are Not Alone" because Ithink it speaks to their reasons for visiting Forest Lawn each month, especially this first Christmas, as well as how MJ fans feel about eachother.

Magic Johnson talks going on tour with 'genius' Michael Jackson and brothers on Jimmy Kimmel (video) Earvin Magic Johnson appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and discussed hisfriendship that he shared with not only Michael Jackson, but theJackson family, as well. Johnson said that he has some of the mostmemorable times with the Jacksons.
Jimmy Kimmel mentions that he watched him speak at Michael Jackson'smemorial, and said he didn't know that the two were friends. Johnsonthen reveals: "I had some of the most unbelievable fun with Michael andthe Jackson brothers. I used to hang out at the house. I went on tourwith the Jacksons - a couple of times. It was really cool, Jimmy, because they would send out limos - and there would be thousands andthousands of girls in front of the hotel, so they would send out thelimos and everyone would think the Jackson's were inside. Then we wouldcome to the hotel about an hour later in these white vans, and everyonewould be gone, chasing the limos down the street. " Johnson continues,"When we would get back from the concerts, we would have pillow fightsand water balloon fights - because they would block off the whole floorfor the Jacksons, and we would have some of our most unbelievable fun."Kimmel then asks how old Johnson was when all of this was happening.Johnson reveals: "It was during the Victory tour. You have to rememberthat Michael and I are 50. Do you remember that I was in the Rememberthe Time video? And I'll tell you - people don't know this, but MichaelJackson loved fireworks. We used to throw firecrackers and cherry bombsat his house. We would do this all day for at least 4 or 5 hoursstraight." He adds, "Like I said, I had so much fun with him. Everyonethinks he was this crazy guy, but Michael was smart, and he was a lotof fun."
Johnson went on to say that Michael, "was a genius at that music." Hetold Kimmel, "I would go to the rehearsals or soundchecks and he knowwhere everybody was supposed to be, when they were supposed to come in.
