TA: Unisem a laggard among semiconductor stocks By LOONG TSE MIN
PETALINGJAYA: Chipmaker Unisem (M) Bhd, which posted strong earnings results onThursday, is a sector laggard with up to 32.4% upside, said TASecurities.
The research house said in a report yesterday,Unisem at current price levels implied a valuation of 6.7 times TA'sestimate for its financial year ending Dec 31, 2008 earnings.
Thisvaluation was already below the counter's 10-year low of 6.9 times, making Unisem “the only semiconductor stock trading below its troughvaluation,” among the stocks covered by the research house, TA said.
However, the stock had mixed reviews from the analyst community.
Ofthe six brokers that issued reports yesterday on Unisem, two gave “buy”recommendations, one each for “underperform”, “hold” and “neutral”,while the last had the company on a restricted list.
Another analyst told StarBiz: “We are still quite negative on the sector and it is difficult to see visibility on earnings.”
Unisemreported a 600% jump in net profit to RM22.2mil in its first quarterended March 31, from RM2.8mil in the previous corresponding quarter.
Inits results announcement, it had said the strong profit growth was dueto improved margins arising from higher capacity utilisation, foreignexchange gain and profit contribution from Unisem Chengdu and UnisemEurope.
“We expect to see stronger earnings this year comingfrom full year contribution of Unisem Mauritius as well as expansiontaking place in China,” TA said.
According to the researchhouse, growth indications for the second quarter of this year arepositive from key customers such as Wolfson, Micrel, Intersil andMaxim, “but in line with seasonality coming off a typically weak firstquarter.”
Micrel, for example, expects a 2% to 7% sequential rise in revenue, while Maxim expects a 1% to 5% quarter-on-quarter increase.
Intersil, on the other hand, expects its second quarter revenue to increase by 5% to 8%.
TAanalyst Hafriz Hezri, when contacted after the company briefingyesterday, said he would be maintaining the research house's “buy”recommendation.
“Management is still bullish on the upcoming (second) quarter. They say orders are still coming in.”
Headded that earnings visibility was not that far in the sector, withcustomers making forecasts going forward about three months.
Another analyst said: “The company looks like it has managed to turn around its overseas business and earnings have stabilised.
“It remains to be seen if their business in Mauritius and China will do well.”
