Goalkeeper
Nelson Dida (Milan): It’s true that the Brazilian can rival David ‘Calamity’ James in the blunder department, but against Cagliari he made extraordinary stops on at least four occasions to deny the attack and keep the Rossoneri in the lead. He was the difference at the Stadio Sant’ Elia between the two sides.
Defence
Cristian Zapata (Udinese): The youngster’s commanding display against Juventus shows why he is the envy of several European clubs. Unbeatable in the air and quick on the ground, he dominated Juve’s attacking threat easily.
Juan (Roma): Alongside Nicolas Burdisso, the Brazilian has formed a rock solid partnership at the heart of the Roma defence and whether it will hold up will be key to the Giallorossi’s title hopes. Against Bari, the veteran was once again his composed self.
Thomas Manfredini (Atalanta): Timely in defence and as a bonus the player served up an assist for Ferreira Pinto on the goal that killed off the match against relegation rivals Siena.
Midfield
Lorenzo De Silvestri (Fiorentina): Excelled when pushed forward into a midfield role against Parma, the ex-Lazio man kept his cool to slot home his goal and gave the opposition backline plenty to worry about over the course of 90 minutes.
Marek Hamsik (Napoli): Kaka may have left Serie A, but the young Slovakian is the next best thing and arguably has the potential to be even better. A real masterclass for Napoli as he scored with a delicate chip to equalise against Lazio for his 10th of the season.
Thiago Motta (Inter): The Brazilian has been largely inconsistent for the Nerazzurri, but put together a fine two-goal display at the San Siro. Opened the scoring with a long range effort, before finishing off the match by completing a swift team move. Worked very hard in the centre of the pitch.
Franco Semioli (Sampdoria): Galloping up and down the right, the winger looked in top shape against his former side, Chievo Verona, and his man of the match worthy performance against the Flying Donkeys has lifted the Blucerchiati into joint fourth place.
Attack
Mario Balotelli (Inter): The youngster made quite the comeback, having been excluded from the line-up for six matches by Jose Mourinho, he scored the second goal during the 3-0 rout of Bologna and was a constant menace to their defence. What’s more? He even celebrated his goal with a smile! Has ‘Super Mario’ turned the corner?
Maxi Lopez (Catania): The 26-year-old won Catania priceless bragging rights in the Sicilian derby with two great finishes. He has been one of the best winter transfer arrivals in Serie A with six goals in 11 matches to help the Etnei avoid relegation.
Antonio Di Natale (Udinese): Serie A’s top scorer was at it again as he downed the hapless Juventus. His volley crashed off the post and was tapped in for the opener, and put away the third himself. A deserved pick for Italy’s team in South Africa. Narrowly beat out two of his team-mates, Sanchez and Simone Pepe for this spot in our Best XI.
