BCHB to dispose of RM1.5b loans
Published: 2008/05/05
Bumiputra-Commerce is now reviewing bids from various potential investors, says its chief executive
BUMIPUTRA-Commerce Holdings Bhd (BCHB), Malaysia’s second largest lender, wants to sell RM1.5 billion (US$474 million) of bad loans, its chief executive said today.
“We are now reviewing bids from various potential investors in this portfolio with the caveat that we will only sell if we get the right price,” Nazir Razak told reporters.
“Under the present difficult international capital market environment, we may or may not get the right price.”
The gross non-performing loans (NPL) ratio of the Malaysian banking sector has improved to 6.1 per cent from 6.4 per cent in February due to fewer bad loans being made and a continued focus on recoveries, Citigroup said in a research reporttoday.
Bumiputra-Commerce group, whose core business is local bank CIMB, is expected to post fourth-quarter earnings soon.
Nazir said the bank has received approval from the Chinese regulatory authorities to set up a representative office in Shanghai and is looking at opening one in India.
“CIMB will proceed with the establishment of a representative office in Shanghai which will complement our operations in Hong Kong and our equity investment in Yingkou.”
Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings bought 20 per cent of China’s Bank of Yingkou Co for US$50 million in March, betting on the nation’s fast-growing northeast opening to foreign lenders.
Malaysia’s banks are moving quickly to expand abroad as earnings potential is limited in their saturated home market of 26 million people.
Malaysia’s banks have little choice: growth at home is limited and mergers and acquisitions are slow and tightly supervised by the state.
There have only been six major bank mergers in Malaysia in the past 10 years, not including same-group restructurings.
The country’s largest lender, Malayan Banking (Maybank), said today it had bought a strategic stake in Pakistan’s MCB Bank for US$680 million, betting on a brighter economic future for the troubled frontier state. - Reuters
