NEW ORLEANS (AP) C.J. Miles needed a mere half to equal his scoring output from his previous three games combined against a New Orleans Hornets squad staggering into the playoffs.
Miles and Devin Harris each scored 18 points, and the Utah Jazz never trailed in a 90-78 victory Monday night.
Hornets coach Monty Williams, whose club was trounced by 22 points a night earlier in Memphis, seemed almost mystified by his team's sudden spate of ineptitude.
"Some of it was indescribable," Williams said. "You hate it when you just don't have the energy or the focus that an NBA team should have. Give credit to Utah. They came in focused and didn't tank it.
"We have to recognize that the hourglass is upside down and time is ticking. We've got to get it together in a hurry."
Paul Millsap scored 16 points and Gordon Hayward added 14 to help the Jazz win for only the second time in 12 games, with the other victory coming against the Los Angeles Lakers last week.
"We continue to grow," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. "That's the most encouraging thing is that we're getting better with the things we're talking about, especially on the defensive end."
Chris Paul, who went scoreless for the first time in his career in Sunday's loss at Memphis, had 15 points. Marco Belinelli, who had 13 points, was the only other starter in double figures for New Orleans, which shot 37.8 percent (28 of 74) while dropping its second straight.
The Hornets (46-35) have slipped to eighth in the Western Conference, a half game behind Memphis (46-34) and 1 1/2 games behind Portland (46-33).
The Grizzlies and Trail Blazers, who each have two regular-season games left, meet in Portland on Tuesday night. The Hornets, who have tiebreakers over both Portland and Memphis, play their regular-season finale in Dallas on Wednesday.
The Hornets were never closer than six points in the second half in scoring their fewest points in a home game this season.
"We've got to go to the drawing board," Paul said. "We've got to pick it up because the playoffs is a lot tougher than these last two games were, so we've got to find it. ... Luckily, we've got time. Not too much time, but we've got some time. We've just got to keep working and make sure we give ourselves a chance every night."
The Jazz, which shot 55.2 percent (37 of 67) and outscored the Hornets 38-28 in the paint, led by as much as 17 on Millsap's 6-foot runner in the fourth quarter.
Miles, who'd scored 12 points in his last three games combined, was 6 of 9 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range.
"I knew I was going to come out of (the slump) once I got a couple clean looks and today they came early," Miles said. "We're just playing hard, man. It's about pride. Even though we're not making the playoffs, guys want to win games. We're building for next year and the future, and guys are buying in."
The Jazz also blocked eight shots, with Derrick Favors blocking three.
The final margin might have been more lopsided if the Hornets had not outrebounded Utah 42-32, with 13 offensive rebounds leading to 10 second-chance points.
Hornets reserves Willie Green and Jason Smith each added 12 points.
"We have to do a little bit of soul-searching and get back to Hornets basketball," Green said. "We've just got to get back to playing better defense. That has been our pillar all year long. ... Tonight, we let those guys push us around." |

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Rookie Gordon Hayward scored a career-high 34 points and hit five 3-pointers to give the Utah Jazz a 107-103 victory over playoff-bound Denver in the season finale for both teams Wednesday night.
The game meant little to the Nuggets, who already had locked up the Western Conference's No. 5 seed and rested many of their players. They probably wish they had sat starting guard Ty Lawson as well. He had to be helped off the court after spraining his left ankle early in the second quarter and did not return.
The Jazz also had nothing to play for, other than trying to win back fans for next season and finishing with a winning mark at home. They accomplished both, with rookie coach Ty Corbin opting for a young lineup with only eight players active.
Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with 27 points.
The Jazz led 61-58 at halftime, and made it 74-64 on Paul Millsap's 3-pointer with 6:48 left in the third quarter. Denver fought back to tie it at 93 with 6:15 left to play on Chandler's baseline jumper, and took a 97-95 lead on two free throws by Chris Andersen.
Hayward's fifth 3-pointer gave Utah a 99-97 lead but J;R. Smith countered with a 3 of his own to put Denver ahead 100-99 with 3:19 left. Al Harrington's 3-pointer bumped Denver's lead to 103-99.
Devin Harris scored for Utah and Hayward's two free throws tied it at 103 with 1:08 remaining.
Al Jefferson's 4-foot turnaround jumper with 35 seconds left was the winner.
The teams bore little resemblance to the ones who opened the season against each other Oct. 27 in Denver. The Nuggets shipped stars Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups east to New York in one blockbuster trade. And the Jazz followed suit a day later by trading away All-Star point guard Deron Williams to the New Jersey Nets.
Since those late-February moves, the teams have gone in opposite directions. The Nuggets went 18-7 and clinched the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, and the Jazz continued tumbling - becoming the first team in NBA history to start 15-5 and 27-13 and not qualify for postseason.
Nuggets coach George Karl wasn't surprised the Jazz struggled after seeing Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan suddenly retire, followed by the Williams trade 13 days later.
"That's like being punched twice, by Muhammad Ali, then the next night getting punched by Joe Frazier," Karl said.
The Nuggets, meanwhile, quickly meshed with new players Chandler, Ray Felton, Danilo Gallinari and Kosta Koufos. |

每年NBA 都会选入新人大概50位。这50位是从成百上千来自全美大学联赛/中学联赛的篮球好手甚至世界各地的篮球好手精选出来的 --- NBA 是世界篮球赛中最顶级的联盟，优厚的薪金每年吸引多少篮球精英争先恐后的挤进去。
NBA各个球队的球探都会明查暗访 查询每一届参加入选的新秀实力到什么程度。所以拿到越高的选秀权，表示你有优先权签下那位球员效劳。通常战绩不好的球队会拿有较大的机会抽到好签，也就先选择好的球员。这个制度确保弱队能每年保持竞争力和强队比拼。 |
