Jazz lose first game since Sloan stepped down
Posted Feb 12 2011 1:20AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Steve Nash had 18 points and 10 assists to lift the Phoenix Suns over the Jazz 95-83 on Friday night in Utah's first game without Jerry Sloan as the head coach in more than 22 years.

The Suns (26-25), who have won four straight against Utah, moved above .500 for the first time since Dec. 7 with their sixth win in seven games, spoiling the debut of new Jazz coach Ty Corbin.

Deron Williams and CJ Miles each scored 19 points, but the short-handed Jazz have dropped 11 of 15.

Sloan was a fixture on the Utah bench for 26 years, 23 as a head coach - the longest active tenure in major American professional sports before he abruptly retired Thursday.

The Hall of Famer is the third-winningest coach in NBA history with a record of 1,221-803.

Some said a clash with Williams was to blame for Sloan's departure, but Sloan merely said he had lost the energy needed to coach in his famously intense manner.

When Williams, who openly challenged Sloan at times this season, was introduced before the game, loud cheers were mixed with a measure of boos.

Corbin, a former Jazz player in the 1990s who has been an assistant coach since 2004, received a sustained ovation as he walked into the arena and took his place in front of the Utah bench. Before the game, the new coach admitted he was nervous and joked he might call Sloan at halftime for some advice.

The Jazz were fine in the first half and led 56-44 at the break.

But the Suns roared back in the third quarter behind Robin Lopez, who had 11 points and five rebounds in the period. Grant Hill's layup capped a 14-5 run that gave Phoenix a 66-63 lead.

Hakim Warrick scored 16 and Marcin Gortat had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who outscored the Jazz 51-27 in the second half and won going away.

When Andrei Kirilenko twisted his right ankle in a scramble for the ball in the second quarter and limped to the locker room, the Jazz were down to nine healthy players. Raja Bell sat out with a strained left calf and Ronnie Price did not dress due to a sprained toe while Francisco Elson played with an inflamed knee.

The Jazz looked energized from the start and raced out to a 13-2 lead. Corbin sat in his seat most of the time, rising only to call a play or remind a player of a defensive assignment.

爵士的将源太少 非战之罪 {:3_83:}

Utah Jazz: Shorthanded Jazz get Frye-d, fall to Suns again
Published: Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011 12:16 a.m. MST By Andrew Aragon, Deseret News

PHOENIX — Their effort didn't result in a victory in Phoenix on Tuesday night, but the Utah Jazz showed some progress in Tyrone Corbin's second game as head coach.

The shorthanded Jazz — especially compared to how they played in Corbin's debut against the same team on Friday — had better energy, executed more efficiently on offense and fought back from a fourth-quarter deficit before losing a 102-101 heartbreaker to the Suns on Tuesday.

Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams (8) drives against Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash during the first quarter of an NBA basketball game, Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, in Phoenix.

"We're coming around," Corbin said. "Guys are relaxing a little bit and we're playing forward, which is the most positive thing about it. We're recognizing where we are and we're building from there. I'm really not disappointed in the effort, just some of the mistakes we made down the stretch."

Certainly, those mistakes were killers for the Jazz.

Utah had three chances to either tie the game or go ahead in the final minute and failed each time. Down 99-98 with 40 seconds left to play, Al Jefferson, who scored a season-high 32 points, threw up an airball to give possession back to the Suns.

After forcing a 24-second shot-clock violation, the Jazz left the ball in the hands of their best player. Deron Williams, after freeing himself with a left-to-right crossover, missed a 19-foot jumper in rhythm with 10.9 seconds left. That miss was a heartbreaker for the Jazz, as Williams had drained a 3-pointer on a similar move to make it 99-98.

"I've won a lot of games with that same shot," said a dejected Williams.

The Jazz's final opportunity to tie or take the lead came when Phoenix was up 100-98. Paul Millsap took a pass from Williams and drove hard before losing the ball out of bounds near the basket with seven seconds remaining. He wanted a foul call on the play but didn't get it.

"He got the ball in a good spot, may have had the opportunity to stop and make a 6-foot jump shot but he went for the foul and didn't get the call," Corbin said. "We have to live with it."

Steve Nash then sank two free throws with 2.9 seconds left. C.J. Miles made a 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds remaining and all Phoenix had to do was inbound the ball to end the game.

There are no moral victories in the NBA, but the Jazz feel they're headed in the right direction with how they played against Phoenix.

"We played harder," Williams said. "Everybody's playing hard. We're trying. They got hot today."

Channing Frye, in particular, scorched the nets.

He scored a career-high 31 points and made six 3-pointers. He almost single-handedly kept the Suns in the game in the first half by making his first five 3-pointers and first eight overall field goal attempts. The Jazz outplayed the Suns for much of the first half, leading by as many as eight, but couldn't get further ahead because of Frye's hot hand.

Ellis scores 35, Warriors beat Jazz 107-100

By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Feb 16 2011 11:51PM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Monta Ellis scored 35 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 107-100 victory Wednesday night over Utah to keep new Jazz head coach Ty Corbin winless since Jerry Sloan retired.

The Jazz (31-26) will go into the All-Star break without any momentum having lost 13 of their last 17, still dealing with injuries and trying to find their way under a new coach.

The Warriors (26-29) have won three straight.

They did it despite an off night for star guard Stephen Curry, who was 1 of 7 on the night. His only basket came on a reverse layup that helped seal the win for Golden State.

The Jazz, who were without starters Andrei Kirilenko (sprained ankle) and Raja Bell (strained calf), and reserve guard Ronnie Price (sprained toe), are now 0-3 under Corbin.

The game was tied at 48 at halftime and at 76 through three quarters.

The Jazz went ahead 90-89 on a putback by Al Jefferson. But Ellis followed with a driving layup and Reggie Williams hit a 3-pointer for a 94-90 lead with 6:09 remaining.

Ellis scored five straight to make it 99-92.

Deron Williams' 3-pointer cut it to 103-100 with 52 second remaining, but Curry scored and Dorell Wright added a pair of free throws.

The Warriors made 8 of 19 3-pointers, while the Jazz shot 3 of 14.

Jefferson led the Jazz with 23 points, Paul Millsap added 22 and C.J. Miles 20.

Deron Williams continued to struggle. He was 5 of 13 and 1 of 5 from beyond the arc.

A power outage knocked out half of the overhead lights in the second quarter, and after a 2-minute delay, officials opted to keep playing, deeming it bright enough.

All of the lights were still not on when the Jazz went on a 7-0 run to start the second half.

Miles banked in a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down then followed with a steal and dunk to give the Jazz a 55-48 lead. He gave Utah a 9-point lead, 61-52, with a driving layup with 8:27 left.

A pair of 3-pointers by Charlie Bell and Wright cut Utah's lead to 65-62 with 6 minutes left in the third.

Then it was Ellis' turn. He hit a 3-pointer and jumper to cut Utah's lead to 70-69 with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

Curry, who scored a game-high 27 points in a 96-81 Warriors victory on Jan. 30, had only two points at halftime. He started 0 for 6, including 0 for 3 from 3-point range.

Utah's Williams, who missed the first game against the Warriors because of a sprained wrist, entered Wednesday's rematch still lacking confidence in his shot. He was just 5 of 13 in Tuesday's loss to Phoenix, including 0 of 3 from 3-point range.

He came out more aggressive Wednesday and but missed two 3-pointers in the final minute.

Notes: Edgar Renteria, the 2010 World Series Most Valuable Player, attended Wednesday's game. ... With his eighth assist Wednesday, Utah's Williams became the fourth player in Jazz history to reach 4,000 career assists. ... Corbin said before the game that he selfishly hoped Williams would "shut it down" and rest his body rather than participate in this weekend's All-Star activities, but acknowledged he would simply tell his star guard to "be careful."

O Connor

Jazz execs feared Williams would leave Utah as free agent
By Bill Oram

The Salt Lake Tribune

First published 3 hours ago
Updated 7 minutes ago Updated Feb 23, 2011 06:44PM
For all the talk about the Utah Jazz becoming just like any other mid-sized NBA franchise after coach Jerry Sloan’s departure, Jazz executives made it clear Wednesday trading Deron Williams to New Jersey constituted an effort to avoid the pitfalls of other NBA franchises.

With Williams’ contract expiring at the end of next season, the Jazz faced the very real possibility of the two-time All Star signing elsewhere, as Toronto’s Chris Bosh, Cleveland’s LeBron James and Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire all did last summer.

"All those teams lost their marquee players and had very little to show for it," Jazz CEO Greg Miller said at an afternoon press conference.

So the Jazz avoided the circus to which they alluded — Miller acknowledged a gut feeling told him Williams wouldn’t re-sign with the Jazz — acquiring former All-Star point guard Devin Harris, 19-year-old forward Derrick Favors, who was the No. 3 pick in last year’s draft, and two first-round draft picks.

The trade came the day after New York acquired Carmelo Anthony, whom New Jersey had been in the running to acquire.

"I think it’s a win-win situation," Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor said. "New Jersey wanted a marquee player and a star."

O’Connor said the Jazz in another year could have found themselves in the same situation as the Nuggets, desperately searching for a buyer.

"Were we willing to take that risk?" O’Connor said at an afternoon press conference. "Were we willing to go through what Denver went through this year? And we would have been if we didn’t feel that a deal that would have helped the health of the franchise be in place."

With the NBA’s trade deadline Thursday at 1 p.m., media reports throughout Wednesday the Jazz may make additional trades. O’Connor wouldn’t rule out more moves.

"I would suspect that we’re going to be very active," he said, "whether anything comes to fruition, I don’t know."

For Wednesday, though, it was clear O’Connor was happy with the return for Williams, a day removed from being Utah’s franchise player.

O’Connor said Favors gives the Jazz a young, third big man, which the Jazz have lacked, while Harris is a suitable replacement for Williams.

"Devin Harris is a good basketball player and when he was with Dallas he gave us fits," O’Connor said.

When Miller was asked about the team moving forward without a star player, he said, "We may have a star player before any of us realize it."
