Jefferson scores 21 to lift Jazz over Bobcats
By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Feb 01 2011 12:59AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Fourteen seconds is all it took for the Utah Jazz to show they came to play Monday night.
That's when Andrei Kirilenko recorded the first of 10 blocked shots on the night for Utah in a hard-fought 83-78 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.
"I thought we were the aggressor tonight for most of the game," said Jazz guard Raja Bell, whose rebound and two free throws down the stretch sealed the win. "That's the way you have to play."
When it was over, the Jazz had a 49-36 edge on the boards while holding Charlotte to 35.6 percent shooting.
Overall, it was the kind of effort that helped Utah start the season 15-5, rather than the sluggish 13-15 mark since then.
"After the game we had (Sunday night), it felt good to watch them play a little harder," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said of an embarrassing 96-81 loss at Golden State. "And when you play hard, you always have a chance to win."
The Jazz had three frontcourt starters record double-doubles, led by Al Jefferson with 21 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Paul Millsap, despite nursing a severely bruised thumb on his shooting hand and dislocating his left little finger in the first quarter Monday, added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kirilenko added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, with 11 rebounds and three blocks.
The Jazz won despite being without star point guard Deron Williams for the third straight game because of a wrist injury and having backup Earl Watson in early foul trouble.
Stephen Jackson led Charlotte with 24 points, while D.J. Augustin added 20 for the Bobcats, who have lost two straight.
The Bobcats trailed by as many as 10 points early in the fourth quarter, but pulled within 76-74 on a 3-pointer by Jackson with 4:19 remaining.
Jefferson bumped Utah's lead back to 79-74 on a layup, but a pair of free throws by Jackson made it a one-possession game again. He made two more free throws to pull Charlotte within one point with 1:58 left.
Millsap grabbed two offensive rebounds off misses before being fouled with 40 seconds left. He made both free throws for an 81-78 Utah lead.
Gerald Wallace missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it for Charlotte and Bell's rebound and subsequent free throws accounted for the final margin.
"We stuck with it," Jefferson said. "They made their run. We made a run and they'd make (another) one. We got some key stops at the end. ... That's the way we got to play. We got to have the energy on defense. We got to help each other."
The Jazz started the game with an 11-0 run while the Bobcats started 0 for 7.
"It's still the little things," Bobcats coach Paul Silas said, particularly agitated at defensive lapses and ill-advised fouls. "I don't want excuses ... just admit, 'Hey, I messed up coach, and that's it.' I can accept that. But we still, as I've been saying, have a long way to go, but we are getting there."
The Jazz, meanwhile, are hoping they are getting back to the team that just a few weeks ago was tied atop the Northwest Division and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. After dropping seven of eight entering Monday's game, players knew the same effort wouldn't cut it.
"It starts on the defensive end and we were very physical," Jefferson said. "We didn't let guys get what they wanted to get like (Sunday) night. We made it tough for them."
Utah opened the second half with another 11-0 run to take a 54-41 lead only to see the Bobcats go on a 13-2 run to pull within 56-54. The Jazz started the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 72-62 lead.
Again the Bobcats fought back, mostly behind their backcourt duo.
"Stephen Jackson is as tough as anybody at that position," said Miles, who added 20 points off the bench for Utah. "And (Augustin) is playing well this year. He pushes the ball and he's scrappy even with his size. They play hard as a unit."
The Jazz played harder, and it showed in the locker room afterward.
"You don't feel it when you're on the court, playing hard," said Jefferson, who was one of many Jazz players dishing out and absorbing some hard shots. "But trust me, I'm feeling it right now."
Notes: The Jazz had 19 turnovers. "You never want to have turnovers, but there's good turnovers and bad turnovers," Bell said. "Those were good. Guys were trying to get their teammate a better shot." ... BYU star guard Jimmer Fredette was in the crowd to watch. ... Jazz reserve C Mehmet Okur missed his 35th game of the season, and the second straight with a lower-back strain. ... Bobcats G Augustin had seven assists and eight rebounds. |

Martin's 22 lift Rockets past short-handed Jazz
By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Feb 03 2011 1:14AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Houston coach Rick Adelman admitted it wasn't pretty.
But after a three-game losing streak, he didn't care.
"It was just a great win, a win we really needed," Adelman said of the Rockets' come-from-behind 97-96 victory over the short-handed Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
Down 96-94, Shane Battier got the ball inside to Kevin Martin, who scored on a layup with 6.9 seconds left despite being fouled by Jazz center Al Jefferson. Martin completed the three-point play to put Houston ahead.
C.J. Miles missed a last-second shot that would have won it for the Jazz, who were without starters Deron Williams and Andrei Kirilenko as well as reserve center Mehmet Okur. Combined the three players account for 39.1 points and 11.4 rebounds for the Jazz.
Though Utah seemingly had it won several times, Martin and the Rockets refused to quit.
"Shane was the quarterback right there and I was the wide receiver and I was in triple coverage," Martin said of the winning play. "It was just like the Giants when they beat the Patriots (in Super Bowl). Shane made a great pass and that was the only place he could have put it, and I just threw something up and it went in."
Jefferson was equally amazed the shot fell.
"That could have been an easy steal because he really didn't have control of the ball except for that split second he got it and made a big play," Jefferson said of Martin. "They really wanted it more and they got it."
Jefferson and Paul Millsap scored 20 points apiece to lead the Jazz, while Earl Watson finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists starting his fourth straight game in place of Williams.
"It's definitely tough on your home floor," said Miles, who added 18 points off the bench. "Kyle Lowry hit some big shots, some big 3s, that kept them in there. ... And then, when you have that look at it to win the game, it makes it even tougher."
Utah (29-21) outscored Houston 19-7 over the final six minutes of the third quarter to take an 82-79 lead into the fourth.
But the Jazz couldn't match the Rockets from beyond the arc.
Houston made 11 of 22 on the night, while the Jazz were just 1 of 11 on 3-pointers. Watson was 0 for 4 from beyond the arc, including a key late miss with the Jazz clinging to a 96-94 lead.
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan refused to blame injuries on the loss, their eighth in the past 10 games.
"(Houston) was short-handed as well," Sloan said of the Rockets, who were without Jordan Hill. "I thought they outrebounded us a couple times in crucial situations and came up with the ball. That's when we've got to be a little bit tougher. I think our guys are always trying to fight back. I don't think they are lacking desire. They played as hard as they could, but made a few mistakes that cost us the ballgame." |

Williams' return sparks Jazz past Nuggets 113-106
By ARNIE STAPLETON
Posted Feb 05 2011 2:21AM
DENVER (AP) Deron Williams is back in action and the Utah Jazz are back in business.
Williams' return to the lineup helped the Jazz snap out of their funk with a 113-106 win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.
"He's the motor," Nuggets coach George Karl sighed.
"He's the engine," lamented Denver point guard Chauncey Billups.
In that case, Williams is humming like a HEMI V-8.
The Jazz had lost eight of 10 and had been without Williams for the last four games after he strained a tendon in his right wrist against San Antonio on Jan. 26.
Williams scored 26 points and dished out 12 assists in his return - better than his season averages of 21.9 points and 9.4 assists that earned him his second straight All-Star pick this week.
"I thought it was good," Williams said. "The wrist is sore, it's going to be sore for a while. Every time I hit it, land on it, get fouled, it hurts. It's something I have to deal with it. I dealt with it last year for a month and a half."
He sure looked like he was pain-free.
"Having our captain back was huge," said Al Jefferson, who had 28 points and 10 boards and made a couple of key hook shots in the fourth quarter that had the Nuggets shaking their heads. "It was wonderful. His presence on the court makes things better for us. He did a good job getting everyone involved."
Among the beneficiaries of Williams' return were Raja Bell, who scored 20, and C.J. Miles with 13.
"It's not surprising," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said of Williams' electric return. "That's who he is. He's able to score for us, he defends, he does a little bit of everything. We're not as good without him, I think everybody knows that."
Carmelo Anthony led the Nuggets with 31 points and Nene tied his career high with 28.
The game got chippy in the fourth quarter when J.R. Smith and Bell got tangled up underneath the Nuggets basket, then Smith fouled Bell on the perimeter. Finally, Smith was ejected for a flagrant 2 foul on Bell with 6:45 left and the Jazz leading 94-89.
"It wasn't surprising at all," Bell said. "It was a matter of time. I was lucky enough that when Deron threw the ball to me I caught a glimpse of him coming so I was able to get off on two feet and I didn't put myself out there to get injured. I kind of knew something like that was coming."
There was lots of pushing from both teams but no punches thrown after the flagrant foul.
"You could see it was intentional," Williams said. "No one wants to fight on the basketball court. You lose too much money doing that. You've got to have your teammate's back. I know J.R., I like J.R., but you can't push my teammate out there."
Smith bolted the locker room before reporters were allowed in after the game.
After separating the teams, the officials reviewed the play. Anthony shot a technical foul shot for Denver and Bell sank two for Utah to make it 96-90. The Jazz went ahead 98-90 on Jefferson's ensuing basket.
The Nuggets never recovered.
Arron Afflalo's 3-point attempt to tie it at 107 rimmed out with a minute left and Jefferson's three-point play at the other end made it 110-104 with 51 seconds remaining.
Williams scored 16 first-half points as the Jazz took a 50-47 lead into the locker room, then he dished out seven assists in the third quarter.
"He seemed to be very early in the game very possessed to win this game," Karl said. "And we lost our defensive focus in the second half. It became an offensive game and I'm not sure that's how we should try to beat this team."
The Nuggets kept it close from the foul line, where they sank 32-of-36 shots, compared to Utah's 17-of-18 performance at the stripe.
Even with Williams' return, the Jazz weren't at full strength. Forward Andrei Kirilenko's sprained left ankle prevented him from being matched up against Anthony, and center Mehmet Okur didn't make the trip because of a strained lower back. |

Westbrook scores 33 to lead OKC past Jazz
Posted Feb 06 2011 12:24AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Russell Westbrook made yet another 3-point shot, drew both his index fingers to his lips, and blew. He pretended to load his hands back into holsters and broke into a big smile.
Westbrook and the Thunder were hot and he knew it.
"Whatever my team needs me to do, I am ready. If that's scoring, that's what I'll do, and tonight I was firing away," said Westbrook, who scored 33 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Utah Jazz 121-105 Saturday night for their fifth win in six games.
Westbrook made all four of his 3-point attempts to help the Thunder shoot a season best 13 of 21 on 3-pointers. Kevin Durant scored 21 points and Jeff Green added 20.
"Russell was phenomenal from the 3-point line. He was unconscious out there," Durant said. "Coach called a lot of plays to get Russell in the pick-and-roll, because we knew we could exploit them. Russell is a great pick-and-roll player and so I just became a second or third option."
Paul Millsap led Utah with 34 points and 10 rebounds and Al Jefferson contributed 21 for the Jazz, who lost their 10th game at home this season.
"They penetrated and kicked the ball out to guys who shot the ball and they did a terrific job shooting the basketball," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.
Durant converted a three-point play to open the fourth quarter give the Thunder a 95-81 lead.
Millsap, who had his fourth 30-plus scoring performance this season, countered with six straight points for the Jazz.
But Durant came right back to spark a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer and capped it with two free throws to give Oklahoma City a 102-87 lead with 8:27 to play. The Jazz only got within single digits once the rest of the way.
"They hit a few of those shots outside with a hand in their face. So that's tough. You play good defense and they hit a shot anyway," Millsap said.
Hampered by slow starts all season, the Jazz began the game by making their first 11 shots. Utah is the first NBA team to start a game 11 for 11 since Detroit did it against Milwaukee on Feb. 19, 2010.
But the Thunder, behind James Harden and Eric Maynor, worked their way back into the game when Durant and Westbrook were on the bench.
"We started out terribly but our second unit sparked us in that second quarter. They gave us some energy and got some stops," said Durant, who saw Utah's 11-point lead evaporate to 2 by the time he returned in the second quarter.
A night after they beat Phoenix 111-107, the Thunder played fast after Utah's initial burst. Oklahoma City is now 6-3 on the second night of back-to-back sets.
Deron Williams had 14 points and 11 assists in his second game back after missing four games with a strained tendon in his right wrist. But Williams and the Jazz looked winded in the second half as the Thunder blew past them.
"They sucked the life out of us," Williams said. "We tried everything (on the pick-and-roll) but I didn't do a good job. They just picked us apart."
Raja Bell also scored 14 for Utah, which has gone 3-9 in the last three weeks. The Jazz attempted 18 3-point shots and made just three.
The Thunder's long-range marksmanship may have caught the Jazz by surprise as they tried to crowd the lane to stop the drives of Westbrook and Durant. The Thunder have the second-lowest 3-point percentage in the league at 32.8 and the last time the Thunder made more than half their 3-point shots was on New Year's Eve with 10 of 18 in a 103-94 win over Atlanta.
On Saturday, outside accuracy opened everything up for the Thunder.
"Tonight we caught fire. It was a lot of fun," Durant said.
Notes: Andrei Kirilenko missed his third straight game with a sprained left ankle and Mehmet Okur sat out with a strained lower back. ... Nick Collison received six stitches after trying to take a charge midway through the second quarter. ... The last time the Jazz made 11 field goal attempts to start a game was March 11, 1998 when they hit their first 12 against Sacramento. |

Jefferson helps Jazz rally past Kings 107-104
Posted Feb 08 2011 1:59AM
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) For the Utah Jazz, this was a fourth-quarter comeback to savor. Now, they hope it puts an end to their recent struggles.
Al Jefferson scored 23 points and Deron Williams had 21 points and nine assists to help Utah rally for a 107-104 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.
The Jazz outscored the Kings 27-17 in the fourth quarter in winning their second road game in a row after dropping the previous six. Utah had lost nine of 12 overall since beating woeful Cleveland on Jan. 14.
"We've struggled on the road, so this was a very important win for us," said Williams, who has been bothered by a lingering sore wrist. "It's not a pretty win, but at least it's a win. I'm hoping this gets us back on track."
Paul Millsap fouled out late in the fourth quarter and finished with 18 points. Raja Bell had 17 points and Kyrylo Fesenko 11.
DeMarcus Cousins had 25 points and 14 rebounds for Sacramento, which committed 20 turnovers. Tyreke Evans had 21 points, Jason Thompson scored 14 and Beno Udrih 11. The Kings have lost three straight.
It appeared the Jazz might be headed for another loss when Sacramento led by six midway through the fourth quarter. Looking for a way to slow down Evans and Cousins, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan went to a zone defense and it worked well. The Kings scored only seven points in the final 6:36.
"We went to the zone to give them a little something different," Sloan said. "They are a big and long team with Cousins and (Samuel) Dalembert inside, and Evans can get to the basket really well. They still hurt us with some offensive rebounds, but the zone definitely slowed them down."
Still, the Kings had their chances to win or send the game into overtime in the final 20 seconds. Omri Casspi took an awkward 3-pointer in the closing seconds that was an airball and the Jazz secured the rebound and the victory.
"We ran a play to set up for Tyreke, but I got kind of open," Casspi said. "I just lost the ball on the way up. The ball slipped out of my hands."
After both Evans and Dalembert missed potential game-tying shots, Andrei Kirilenko converted a free throw for a 107-104 Jazz lead with 6.8 seconds left.
Cousins converted a three-point play to pull the Kings to 105-104 with 1:04 left. But he quickly committed his sixth foul at the other end of the court, and Kirilenko made a free throw for a two-point Jazz lead.
Although he played only 30 minutes and had foul problems early, Cousins still finished with his fourth 20-point effort in the past five games.
"Cousins is amazing. The sky is the limit for him," Jefferson said. "He's going to be something special."
Kirilenko made a fast-break layup and fell hard to floor with 1:55 to go. The basket put the Jazz ahead 103-101.
Trailing by seven after three quarters, the Jazz pulled even in the first 4 minutes of the fourth. A dunk by Jefferson followed by Earl Watson's fast-break layup tied the game at 81.
It was Evans and Cousins scoring regularly in the third to give the Kings an 87-80 lead. Evans frequently penetrated inside and had 13 points in the quarter. Cousins converted a three-point play with 1.7 seconds left and had 11 points and eight rebounds.
"I thought the turnovers killed us," Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "They killed us in the first half and they killed us in the second. We built a lead in the second half by taking care of the ball, and then turnovers popped up again down the stretch. That's a good team and you can't just give them those possessions like we did."
Evans made a twisting, driving, left-handed layup in traffic and added a free throw after being fouled. The three-point play put the Kings ahead 73-66 midway through the third quarter.
Casspi scored nine points for the Kings, who led 56-55 after a first half with numerous lead changes. Jefferson scored 14 points for the Jazz and Williams had 11 points and six assists.
Notes: Sloan has signed a one-year contact extension for the 2011-12 season, which will be his 24th as Utah's coach. ... Donte Greene had a four-point play in the second quarter, breaking a 43-all tie and igniting an 8-0 run for the Kings. ... Kirilenko was back in the Jazz starting lineup after missing the previous three games with a sprained left ankle.

Rose scores 29 to lift Bulls over Jazz
Posted Feb 10 2011 12:12AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Derrick Rose scored 29 points and former Jazz players Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer made key plays late Wednesday night to lift the Chicago Bulls to a 91-86 victory over Utah in a game that marked the return of Carlos Boozer to Salt Lake City.
Boozer, who played five seasons for the Jazz but signed as a free agent with Chicago after last season, finished with 14 points and six rebounds for Chicago.
Korver sank a 3-pointer with 2:17 remaining to give the Bulls an 87-83 lead. The Jazz cut it to 87-86 on free throws by Al Jefferson and Andrei Kirilenko, but Rose sank two more free throws to put Chicago ahead by three again with 13 seconds left.
Brewer, drafted by the Jazz in 2006, then stole the ball from Deron Williams and sank two free throws for the final margin.
Jefferson led the Jazz with 28 points, while Paul Millsap added 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Boozer was a two-time Western Conference All-Star in Utah, but there were always questions about team chemistry with him in Salt Lake. He made it be known he wanted out, and eventually signed as a free agent with Chicago after last season.
His first game back in Utah elicited the most media attention surrounding the Jazz since the NBA playoffs.
There were signs every, with one proclaiming "Carlos Whozer?" and he was booed during introductions every time he touched the ball.
He also got a rude welcome from Millsap, who blocked his first shot, knocked the ball out of his hands twice in the first four minutes and got Boozer to dribble it off his own foot.
Boozer had just six points at halftime on 3-of-9 shooting. Millsap, meanwhile, was within one rebound of a double-double by halftime with a team-high 13 points.
The Jazz won the rebounding battle 48-41 and outshot the Bulls, but Utah also was only 8 of 11 from the free throw line while the Bulls made 20 of 26. |
