Jefferson leads Jazz comeback win over Clippers
Posted Dec 30 2010 1:36AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) Al Jefferson had 31 points and 10 rebounds to help the Utah Jazz beat the Los Angeles Clippers 103-95 Wednesday night, winning their fourth straight on the road.

Andre Kirilenko missed his first game of the season because of a lower back strain and reserve C.J. Miles also sat out because of flulike symptoms, leaving the Jazz vulnerable at small forward.

Utah rookie Gordon Hayward made his fifth start of the season in Kirilenko's spot, and had 17 points and six rebounds. Mehmet Okur, playing his second game of the season after missing the first 30 while rehabbing from a torn left Achilles' tendon, scored 13 points in 17 minutes.

Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 30 points and 12 rebounds, while Eric Gordon added 19 points.

The Clippers set a season high with 10 blocked shots, one more than they had against the Jazz on Nov. 6 at Utah in a double-overtime loss.

Griffin's double-double was his 26th this season and 20th in a row, breaking the Clippers rookie record set by Michael Cage during the 1986-87 season and giving Griffin the longest such streak by any NBA rookie in the last 40 years.

Only two players in the league have had longer double-double streaks during the last 10 years - Kevin Garnett (37) and David Lee (24).

Utah trailed by as many as 12 points late in the first quarter and didn't take its first lead until Hayward hit a 3-pointer for a 60-58 advantage with 9:14 left in the third. They took an 81-70 lead into the fourth quarter before the Clippers closed to 81-77 on a 3-pointer by rookie Eric Bledsoe with 10:34 to play.

But the Jazz responded with a 12-2 run, capped by a three-point play by Jefferson that extended Utah's martin to 93-79 with 6:37 remaining.

Griffin received a delay-of-game warning from referee Monty McCutchen when he grabbed the ball after his tip-in basket and then bounced it to a Utah player who was waiting to inbound it. Less than a minute later, Griffin again got his hands on the ball after it went through the net on a short hook shot, but quickly dropped it and put up his hands on his way up court as if to say: "I didn't do anything wrong."

The Clippers began a five-game homestand after winning five of their previous six games - including a pair of one-point road victories against Chicago and Sacramento in which both games were decided by a missed free throw in the final 2 seconds by the NBA's last two rookies of the year. The first was by Derrick Rose on Dec. 18, the other by Tyreke Evans on Monday.

Notes: Griffin is donating $100 for every one he makes to Dunking For Dollars, a fundraising endeavor established to help fight childhood obesity. The Nestle Foundation will match his donation. ... Kirilenko hasn't played a full 82-game schedule since 2001-02, when he was a rookie. ... The Jazz had to call a timeout with 7:13 left in the first quarter after Raja Bell lost a shoe in the frontcourt. ... The Clippers are 0-3 against the Jazz and have given up an average of 107 points to them. ... Griffin, the only player to start all 30 games for the Clippers, is averaging 27 points and 14.3 rebounds against the Jazz.

爵士的伤兵也太多了吧

Matthews scores 30 points, Trail Blazers win

Posted Dec 31 2010 1:50AM
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The Portland Trail Blazers are determined to stay upbeat despite Brandon Roy's serious knee problems.
Wesley Matthews tied a career high with 30 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 27 and the Blazers beat the Utah Jazz 100-89 on Thursday night, hours after learning that their star guard will be sidelined for a lengthy period because of sore knees.
"We ain't going to worry about it," Andre Miller said. "We just got to keep trucking. When (Roy's) out there, he's out there and when he is not, he's not. We just go to keep playing."
The Blazers said before the game that Roy would be shut down indefinitely because of sore knees that have plagued him throughout the season. The All-Star has missed 10 games this season, including the last seven. The Blazers didn't put a timeline on Roy's absence, but general manager Rich Cho suggested it could be lengthy and coach Nate McMillan said it was possible Roy would be out the rest of the season.
Matthews, lured away from Utah over the summer with a five-year, $34 million deal, has flourished as Roy's replacement in the starting lineup. The second-year guard from Marquette entered the game averaging 15.4 points and has led the team in scoring in 11 games.
"We felt he was a good player when we picked him up in free agency," McMillan said. "His role coming in was basically to come off the bench. With extended minutes, he has been good at the 2 and the 3 position. Tonight, we're missing Brandon, and anytime you are missing guys, it is an opportunity for someone else."
Marcus Camby returned after missing three of Portland's last five games because of an ankle injury, leading Portland with a season-high 20 rebounds. Andre Miller added 16 points and 10 assists.
Deron Williams had 19 points and eight assists for Utah, Paul Millsap added 17 points and Al Jefferson had 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Jazz lost to Portland for the second time this week.
Utah cut it to 85-78 with 6:44 remaining after Jeremy Evans hit a running hook shot. But Portland went on a 6-0 run with Aldridge scoring down low and Miller knocking down a turnaround jumper to push the lead to double digits and end the threat.
The Jazz were coming off a road victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. Utah entered the game 6-2 when playing for the second straight night, but the Jazz started slowly against Portland.
"It was poor effort, all the way around," guard Raja Bell said. "You can talk it up all you want, but I thought we have to be tougher than that. That's just my personal opinion."
The Jazz are also banged up. Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko sat out with back injuries for Utah. Kirilenko has missed two games. Okur was injured Wednesday. C.J. Miles, who had 25 points against Portland on Nov. 20, sat out with the flu.
The Blazers hit eight of their first 10 shots and Matthews made a 3-pointer put Portland up 19-10. However, the Blazers missed 14 of their next 17 shots and eventually lost the lead, with Earl Watson scoring to put Utah up 30-29. The Blazers regained the lead and were up 46-41 at halftime.
Matthews scored 16 points in the third quarter to help Portland take a 15-point lead at 70-55.
NOTES: Williams beat the first-quarter buzzer with a 46-foot heave from backcourt. ... The Blazers are 7-3 without Roy. ... Portland began a stretch where 11 of 16 games are at the Rose Garden.

Millsap scores 22 points, Jazz beat Grizzlies
By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Jan 02 2011 1:15AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The start of the New Year meant much of the same for the Utah Jazz.
Fall behind early, rally behind the bench, then have All-Star Deron Williams bring it home.
That formula worked again Saturday night in a 98-92 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Williams scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and passed to rookie Gordon Hayward for a dunk to seal it with 18.9 seconds left as Utah won its eighth straight at home against the Grizzlies to improve to 23-11.
"Crunch time is when your best player steps up," forward Paul Millsap said about Williams. "He knew it was his time."
Millsap led the Jazz with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 13 in the first half when Utah built a 48-38 lead.
The biggest spark came from Utah's backups, which outscored the Grizzlies reserves 32-6.
"Our bench has been a strong point for us all season," Williams said of a unit led by Earl Watson, Ronnie Price and Gordon Hayward. "It's contagious. I wish the first group could do that. That way we could keep it going rather than have to have . . . the second group bring us back."
Price's jam and 3-pointer gave the Jazz a 38-28 second-quarter lead. Then Hayward showed how much he has grown as a player 34 games into the season.
"Basketball is a game of confidence," Hayward said. "Everybody in the NBA can play. It's whether they can play their own game and not go out there and think. I'm definitely trying to go out there and not think as much and just play."
He showed his athleticism on fast-break layups and a more aggressive side, capped by the authoritative dunk for Utah's final points.
"You try to go up soft, it's not going to work (in the NBA)," Hayward said. "For me, it's all about trying to learn. With each game, it's going to get better and better and I'm going to get better and better."
Williams said the team also is growing more confident in Hayward, who played nearly 30 minutes, including much of the fourth quarter when the game was tight.
"The minutes and the confidence is all he needed," Williams said about the former Butler star. "He's playing good, picking up on things. It means he's learning on the job."
Zach Randolph led Memphis with 27 points and 16 rebounds. O.J. Mayo, who was back in the starting lineup, added 18 but was 3 of 9 from 3-pointer range.
Both teams were missing key players because of the illness.
Memphis was without top scorer Rudy Gay (20.7 points). Gay dressed but did not play because of a stomach virus.
C.J. Miles, who sparked Utah with 20 points in a Dec. 6 win over Memphis, dressed but did not play because of flu-like symptoms.
Reserve Mehmet Okur missed his second straight game for Utah because of a back injury and the Jazz also lost another big man when Francisco Elson was ejected with 2:51 left in the first half after picking up two technicals protesting a foul against Marc Gasol.
"It happened so fast I don't think he realized what happened," Millsap said.
Utah would fall behind 8-0 to start the game but was even at 21 after the first quarter.
The Jazz led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Memphis fought back to take a 79-78 lead on Mayo's 3-pointer with 8 minutes remaining.
From there, the game went back and forth. It was tied at 81 and 83 before Williams got going, scoring 10 of Utah's next 15 points.
"We played pretty good for 46 minutes defensively," said Gasol, whose Grizzlies outrebounded Utah 43-35.
"We were getting stops, and then we were turning the ball over," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said of the Grizzlies' 19 turnovers. "Then when we started scoring, we couldn't get stops. They made some big plays. We just didn't get it done."
NOTES: Saturday was only the 16th time in his career that Williams failed to record an assist in a first half, and the first since his rookie season. ... Grizzlies G Mike Conley had X-rays of his ribs taken at halftime. They were negative and he played through the injury in the second half and finished with 17 points. ... The Grizzlies shot just 38.2 percent in the first half and committed 14 turnovers. ... The Grizzlies are now 1-10 in their last 11 games vs. the Jazz. ... Randolph had his 20th double-double of the season.

最后关头 Raja Bell 射入3分球和2个罚球,爵士笑到最后

Williams scores 22, leads Jazz past Pistons

By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Jan 04 2011 1:15AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) It's been nearly six years since the Detroit Pistons defeated the Utah Jazz.

That wouldn't change Monday night, even if Tayshaun Prince was scoring from everywhere and 13-year veteran Tracy McGrady came within a rebound of a triple-double.

Raja Bell made sure of it, hitting a 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining then sinking two free throws after Detroit cut it to one again, leading Utah to a 102-97 victory.

"It was huge, a timely shot that we needed," Deron Williams said of Bell's 3-pointer. "aul (Millsap) did a great job of swinging it, getting Raja a nice open look."

Williams added a pair of free throws for the final points.

The Jazz (24-11) have now won 11 straight against Detroit (11-23), with the Pistons' last win coming March 23, 2005.

"It feels good," said Millsap, who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. "We gutted it out. They ran off a lot of screens and were getting any look they wanted. They missed a few shots down the stretch and we made some big plays."

McGrady, starting in place of leading scorer Rodney Stuckey, missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it at 100, and Al Jefferson grabbed the rebound to seal the victory.

The wild finish erased yet another slow start for the Jazz, who fell behind 22-16 early, and trailed 79-78 entering the fourth.

"The good thing is we're a closing team," Bell said.

"We've been in tight games this year and kept plugging away. You could see us really close ranks there in the fourth quarter and start executing our stuff."

Bell also was confident he'd get his chance, even if he was 0 for 2 from 3-point territory before the game-winner.

"I'd missed a few early in the game but had a feeling I would get another look at one," he said. "You stay ready then jump up there and shoot."

The shot erased a fine performance from Prince, who led Detroit with 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting. McGrady, meanwhile, had 11 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

"I thought he was outstanding," Detroit coach John Kuester said of McGrady. "He did a good job of controlling the pace of play, making good decisions with the basketball. Eleven assists with one turnover is very impressive."

Bell wasn't surprised.

"I know his knees aren't what they used to be, but he's one of the most talented guys ever to play the game," Bell said of McGrady. "When he was in his prime and the knees were healthy, he was as good as anybody."

Despite Utah's run against the Pistons, this one was close from start to finish.

The game was tied 15 times with 11 lead changes. While Utah held a 38-28 advantage in points in the paint, the Pistons held a 39-35 edge in rebounds.

Utah had all five starters plus C.J. Miles score in double figures.

The Jazz went on a 16-4 run in the second quarter to take a 41-32 lead. Utah's reserves once again were the spark, with Ronnie Price igniting the crowd with a dunk and a twisting layup, and Miles adding a put-back, three-point play and 3-pointer.

Miles led Utah in scoring in the first half with 11 points as the Jazz took a 53-51 lead into the locker room. He scored just one point in the second half.

"I'm exhausted," said Miles, who missed two games because of flulike symptoms. "I ran out of gas in the second half, but I'll be all right. I just need to get some extra work in just to get running again. I've been basically laying down the last four days."

Jazz players knew the Pistons wouldn't lay down.

"I know their record kind of doesn't reflect it right now, but they're surely a dangerous team, in a tight ballgame especially," Bell said. "It was tough. We had opportunities to put some distance between us. But ultimately we got the win."

Joe Johnson scores 28 as Hawks beat Jazz 110-87

By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Jan 06 2011 1:03AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Midway through the fourth quarter, a Utah Jazz fan yelled, "Give us a miracle."

Instead, the Jazz gave Atlanta another open shot.

Joe Johnson scored 28 points, making five of seven 3-pointers, and the Hawks went 14 of 25 from beyond the arc to cruise past Utah 110-87 on Wednesday night.

"Joe was on fire tonight," teammate Josh Smith said. "Every 3 was definitely big because it was a momentum killer."

Johnson shot 10 for 17 overall and Jamal Crawford added 26 points off the bench for Atlanta, which won its third straight on the road and avenged a 90-86 loss Nov. 12 at home to the Jazz.

Playing the second game on a back-to-back, the Hawks came in a little tired. But their starters set the tone early.

"From the jump, everybody was focused. We knew how important this game was, playing against a tough Utah team," Smith said.

It didn't hurt the Hawks that injured forward Paul Millsap was out of the Jazz lineup.

"We really took advantage of that and were able to establish ourselves early and kept it going through the whole game," Smith said.

Utah's second-leading scorer at 17.5 points per game, Millsap was inactive because of a bruised hip. Without him, coach Jerry Sloan opted to go big, giving Francisco Elson his first start in a Jazz uniform.

But Elson was scoreless and did not have a rebound in the first quarter. He did not play in the second quarter and finished with one rebound, one steal and no points.

"That definitely hurt," Jazz guard Deron Williams said of Millsap's absence. "But we've had guys injured in the past. It's not an excuse to come out and get beat by 20 on your home floor."

Williams and Andrei Kirilenko each had 19 points to lead the Jazz, who shot just 39.4 percent and fell to 13-7 at home.

Utah got off to another slow start, trailing 12-3 and 20-6. Johnson opened the game with an uncontested 3 and Crawford hit Atlanta's fourth of the quarter to give the Hawks a 14-point lead with 5:18 left in the first.

The Hawks led 30-17 after one, with the Jazz shooting just 35.3 percent to 52.4 percent for the Hawks.

A halfcourt buzzer-beater that Crawford banked in gave the Hawks a 55-41 halftime lead.

Crawford, who scored 31 in a 108-102 win Tuesday night over Sacramento, had 17 off the bench for Atlanta in the first half on 6-of-11 shooting. The Hawks made six of 11 3-pointers in the half.

They led by as many as 18 in the third quarter after Johnson hit his fourth 3 of the game.

"We tried to stop them but they were good at keeping their composure and executing their offense," Kirilenko said.

Williams cut it to 10 with a four-point play with 8:11 left in the quarter but Johnson's fifth 3 made it 70-57.

"They were daggers," Smith said. "It feels good when you can get knockdown shots like that. They were in zone and we had open looks."

Kirilenko tried to rally the Jazz with 12 points in the third quarter on 5-of-5 shooting. But the Hawks had an answer each time.

Maurice Evans hit a pair of 3s and Smith went right through Utah reserve Jeremy Evans for a dunk.

The Hawks led by 17 entering the fourth and quickly bumped it to 21 on back-to-back jump shots by Crawford and Al Horford, who finished with 18 points.

"I don't know what you call it, but we don't have it," Williams said.

"You can't keep getting down by 15 points in the first half and expect to come back. You can do it every now and then. We've done it a lot in the short season, but you can't rely on it. I don't think any coach in America has a game plan to get down by 15 and come back every game."

NOTES: The Jazz are 5-8 when allowing more than 100 points. ... Utah ranks 28th in first-quarter scoring (23 points per game). ... The Hawks had a better shooting percentage from 3-point territory (56) than overall (50.6). ... Williams was given a technical in the second quarter for arguing a no-call. ... Crawford made his 31st career four-point play at 8:25 of the fourth quarter.
