Williams scores 22 points to lift Jazz over Bucks
By COLIN FLY
Posted Dec 18 2010 11:48PM
MILWAUKEE (AP) It took Al Jefferson and the rest of the Jazz 24 hours to get over how badly they played in New Orleans. Good thing Utah never seems to repeat a poor performance.

Deron Williams scored 22 points and added 11 assists, leading the Jazz past the Milwaukee Bucks 95-86 and overcoming a double-digit deficit for the ninth time this season on Saturday night.

The Jazz (19-9) avoided losing consecutive games for the first time since starting 0-2 and shook off a season-low 71 points on Friday in New Orleans with a second-half surge after falling behind by 12 early to Milwaukee.

"I just don't see we could play worse than that. There was no chance of playing worse than that, no chance of shooting worse than that," Williams said. "We're a resilient team. We took last night personal. It was an embarrassing loss and we had to put forth a better effort tonight."

Jefferson had 18 points and nine rebounds, C.J. Miles scored 16 points and Paul Millsap had 15 for the Jazz, which had 10 of its 14 offensive rebounds in the second half.

"We were attacking the basket, got a couple of lucky bounces. We were just aggressive," Jefferson said. "We don't never panic, last night was just one of them nights where we never could get our heads back above water, but other than that, we really don't panic."

The effort against the Hornets was the type coach Jerry Sloan said would keep him up at night, but he'll sleep soundly now continuing this four-game, 4,300-mile road trip that finishes with stops in Cleveland and Minnesota.

"We've had games like we did last night. It's not the first time. The important thing as a group and as an organization, you hope that they come back and see the importance of the game," Sloan said.

Andrew Bogut scored 19 points and had nine rebounds and John Salmons returned from back spasms to contribute 18 points, but the Bucks couldn't hold on to the lead.

Brandon Jennings gave Milwaukee an 80-79 lead on a layup with 6:22 left, but Williams, who had been whistled for a technical foul on the bench earlier in the quarter, answered with a 3 for the fifth lead change of the fourth.

Williams said he didn't deserve the technical.

"I asked him if he was a rookie. I thought he was. He took that personally, what can you do?" said Williams, who scored 15 of his 22 in the second half.

Salmons threw a bad pass that ended up in the hands of Francisco Elson, who flipped it to Andrei Kirilenko for a dunk. Bogut answered, but Kirilenko hit a long jumper, Millsap made a layup, Williams added two free throws and Jefferson tipped in a miss to make it 92-82 with 3:29 left. The Jazz scored 25 second-chance points, and didn't wait for the fourth quarter to make a big run, using a 15-3 spurt early in the second half.

Millsap stole the ball from Jennings and missed a layup on the other end that Williams followed with a putback. Jefferson then hit a short jumper to give Utah a 52-48 lead.

On the other end, Bogut appeared to jam his right arm trying to dunk over Millsap, and was gripping his elbow and shaking out the same hand he injured in an ugly fall in April, but stayed in the game.

"It's OK, a dead arm," Bogut said. "Just felt funny, went numb. I came back. It just felt weird shooting without feeling."

The Jazz took a 58-49 lead, but Milwaukee, playing its only home game in a two-week stretch, tied it before Raja Bell hit a 3-pointer to give Utah a 71-68 lead heading into the fourth.

The Bucks raced out to a double-digit lead to start the game and Drew Gooden hit consecutive jumpers midway through the second quarter to give the Bucks their biggest lead of the first half at 39-27.

Utah took its first lead with the first four points of the third quarter and went on to sweep the season series against the Bucks after also winning on Nov. 29 in Salt Lake City.

"Both games were pretty similar," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "They had more assists, they had more steals, they had fewer turnovers, they shot the 3 better, got to the line more. An awful lot of that revolved around the offensive glass."

Notes: Bogut, the No. 1 overall pick in 2005, played in the 350th game of his career. ... Sloan is two wins away from surpassing Pat Riley (1,210) for third on the career coaching list. ... Milwaukee has made eight coaching changes since Sloan took over in Utah in 1988. ... Jazz PF Mehmet Okur, in his second game back since rupturing his left Achilles' tendon, went 1 for 5 for three points.

爵士轻松击败骑士101-90,史隆执教胜利场数上升到史上No.3

不过中锋Okur 热身时再一次弄伤脚,没有上阵

Jazz thump Cavs 101-90, Sloan ties for 3rd in wins
By TOM WITHERS
Posted Dec 20 2010 9:32PM
CLEVELAND (AP) CJ Miles scored 22 points, Paul Millsap and Raja Bell added 19 apiece and the Utah Jazz beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-90 on Monday night, moving coach Jerry Sloan into a tie with Pat Riley for the third-most wins in NBA history.
Deron Williams had 17 points and 10 assists as the Jazz improved to 11-1 against the Eastern Conference.
Sloan, Utah's coach since 1988, has matched Riley with 1,210 victories. Up next is Lenny Wilkens (1,332) and Don Nelson (1,335). During Sloan's long run, which began before Jazz rookie Gordon Hayward was born, there have been 234 coaching changes across the league.
Daniel Gibson scored a career-high 29 for the Cavaliers, who have lost 11 of 12.
Sloan's tough-nosed mentality made him a feared player, and he used that same intensity and determination to become one of the game's most successful coaches. He's the only coach to win 1,000 games with one team, and is one of just three coaches - Riley and Phil Jackson are the others - to have more than 15 consecutive winning seasons.
He's still looking for his first championship ring, and he's got another team ready to make a run at one.
The night began ominously for the Jazz. Forward Mehmet Okur sprained his right ankle during pregame warmups and had to sit. Okur had only just returned after missing Utah's first 26 games following surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles' tendon.
The Jazz didn't miss him.
Williams smoothly ran Utah's offense the way he always does. Millsap and Al Jefferson controlled the boards underneath and Bell made five 3-pointers as the Jazz had little trouble with an overmatched Cleveland team.
Leading by 12 after three, the Jazz scored two quick baskets to open the fourth and before long their lead was up to 20.
Jefferson added 13 rebounds, including four on the offensive end for the Jazz, who seemed to play volleyball around the rim on several possessions.
Mo Williams added 16 points and 10 assists for the Cavs, who have played with better energy of late but don't have the talent to stay with a team of Utah's caliber.
Deron Williams scored nine points and Millsap added seven in the third quarter, when the Jazz got whatever they wanted on offense. Williams scored seven in a 12-4 spurt that gave Utah a 76-64 lead entering the fourth.
The only thing that kept Cleveland close was its 3-point shooting. Gibson made consecutive 3-pointers as the Cavs, who attempted 11 3s in the period, got within 64-60. But after a timeout, Williams drove for a layup, hit a 15-foot jumper and drained a 3 to send the Jazz on their way.
The Jazz reeled off eight straight points to take a 42-33 lead midway through the second quarter, and seemed poised to open up more distance on the Cavs. However, Cleveland responded by making three 3-pointers in just over two minutes to pull even at 44 before Bell hit his third 3 of the half, pushing Utah's lead to 49-44 lead at the break.
Notes: In his 23rd season, Sloan is the longest-tenured coach with one team in any of the four major pro sports. Still, he has never been named NBA coach of the year. "I'm still kind of baffled by that," Cavs coach Byron Scott said. "But I don't think he cares, either." The Cavs have had nine coaches during the span Sloan has been with the Jazz. "Hopefully, we don't have 10," Scott chuckled. ... Cleveland attempted 28 3-pointers.

逆转王爵士再次完成逆转,在木狼主场逆转15分劣势 反胜112-107

Sloan moves to 3rd place on wins list

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI
Posted Dec 22 2010 11:52PM
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) No deficit is too big for the Utah Jazz to overcome and no lead is too great for the Minnesota Timberwolves to squander.

That much has been clear all season, especially Wednesday night.

Al Jefferson had 23 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks against his former team and Jerry Sloan moved into sole possession of third place on the career victories list in the Jazz's 112-107 victory over the Timberwolves.

Jefferson scored 21 points in the second half and Deron Williams added 25 points, seven assists and seven rebounds for the Jazz, who came back from 12 points down at the start of the fourth quarter.

"We make it hard for ourselves," Jefferson said. "Hey, that shows that we don't give up and that shows that we can get it from somewhere, and that's what we did tonight."

Sloan picked up victory No. 1,211 to break a tie with Pat Riley for third on the career list. Only Don Nelson (1,335) and Lenny Wilkens (1,332) have more victories in NBA history.

"I'm more proud of the win. I'm not in to numbers and stuff like that," Sloan said. "I never have been. I've got a great organization to work for that's given me an opportunity to stay there for a long time. I'm very thankful for that and the coaches that I have with me. It's not about me, it's more about what we try to do as a staff."

Kevin Love had 25 points and 19 rebounds and Michael Beasley added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves. They have lost seven straight games and 15 of their last 17 to take their usual place in the Northwest Division cellar.

"It's a repeated story for us," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "We're close, but we just can't do the right things late in close ball games."

Paul Millsap had 23 points and 11 rebounds and converted two three-point plays in the final 2 minutes to help the Jazz rally. His free throw with 33.5 seconds left gave Utah its first lead since 6-5 in the first quarter and the Jazz notched their 10th comeback win from a double-digit deficit.

The Wolves, meanwhile, lost after holding a double-digit lead for the seventh time this season.

The Jazz trailed by 15 late in the third quarter, which is exactly where they like to be these days.

Andrei Kirilenko scored six straight points for the Jazz to cut Minnesota's lead to 87-79 early in the fourth. Earl Watson's driving layup cut Minnesota's lead to three points with under 6 minutes to play, and the young Timberwolves started to tense up again in a tight spot.

Webster, who didn't play in a game until last week because of back surgery, hit a big 3-pointer, drew two fouls on jump shots and drew a charge on Jefferson as Minnesota padded lead to 101-94 with 3 minutes to play.

But Williams rushed back the other way for a three-point play and the Jazz made 15 of 20 shots in the fourth to squeak out the win.

Webster, who scored 16 points, committed a pair of costly turnovers and also had a silly foul on Millsap to give him an and-one situation as the Wolves lost the handle down the stretch.

"I think I let my teammates down with the turnovers that I had," Webster said. "Just careless turnovers. Dumb fouls. I definitely take responsibility for that, being a veteran."

Jefferson played his first game against the Timberwolves since being traded to Utah last summer. He spent the previous three seasons in Minnesota, becoming a fan favorite thanks to an endless array of pump fakes and low post moves. He has found what he wanted in Utah, playing on the division-leading Jazz, while the Wolves (6-24) continue to wallow in yet another rebuilding season.

"I'll always support the Timberwolves," Jefferson said. "I feel bad and know exactly what they're going through. Believe it or not I think they're heading in the right direction. They've got a great group of guys here and a lot of talent."

NOTES: Timberwolves PG Sebastian Telfair was inactive with plantar fasciitis in his right foot and C Nikola Pekovic was out with a sprained left ankle. ... Jazz rookie Gordon Hayward converted a three-point play on a dunk with 13 seconds left to put the game out of reach.

圣诞节过后 爵士球员们还没有调整状态吗?

Aldridge scores 26 as Blazers upset Jazz
By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Dec 28 2010 1:30AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The good news for the Utah Jazz is they get another shot at Portland on Thursday.

The bad news is the Trail Blazers still have LaMarcus Aldridge.

The 6-foot-11 Aldridge, who creates a big matchup problem for the Jazz, scored 26 points on Monday as Portland halted a four-game road losing streak with a 96-91 victory.

"He was on," Portland teammate Wesley Matthews said. "He's a very talented player. He brought us home tonight."

Aldridge scored 10 points in the fourth quarter on 4-of-6 shooting and had four rebounds and a blocked shot down the stretch for the Blazers.

Deron Williams had 31 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers that pulled the Jazz within 94-91 with 7.7 seconds left. But Andre Miller (17 points, six assists) made a pair of free throws to seal the win for Portland (16-15).

"Tonight I thought we showed some poise in the fourth quarter," Aldridge said. "We played more confident down the stretch."

Portland held Utah to just 33.3 percent shooting in the fourth quarter. Take away Williams' 4-of-7 effort and the Jazz made just 3-of-14 shots after entering the final quarter tied at 66.

The loss was the sixth at home for the Jazz, who lost only nine on their home court last season.

"Sometimes breaks are good; sometimes they are bad," Williams said of the Jazz not playing since ending a four-game road trip Wednesday. "Tonight it was bad. We came out sluggish, couldn't find the energy. But you have to give them credit. They took us out of our stuff. They defended us well."

The Trail Blazers went on a 14-0 run in the third quarter to take a 60-53 lead.

"They took the life out of us and busted us in the mouth," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We fell out like flies. When you play games at home like this in your building, you've got to be a little tougher than what we were."

The win avenged a 103-94 loss in Portland on Nov. 20, and served as a nice homecoming for former Jazz guard Matthews, who received a rousing ovation when he was introduced before the game.

"It felt great," said Matthews, who left Utah to sign a five-year, $34 million deal with Portland after last season. "I wasn't expecting that at all. I really appreciate the support. Jazz fans have always been great to me."

By halftime, Matthews had as many points (four) as turnovers.

Then he started Portland's third-quarter spurt with a 3-pointer. Nicolas Batum would add another, and Aldridge and Miller each hit a pair of shots while Utah went scoreless for nearly five minutes.

Matthews finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

"We were confident in the first half when we were losing," Matthews said of falling behind 31-22 after a putback by C.J. Miles with 9:28 left in the second quarter. "We still felt like we were controlling the game. We were just waiting for our break."

The Blazers created their own break by controlling the boards (41-31), forcing Utah into 17 turnovers and winning the battle in the paint, 40-32

"(Defense) was a point of emphasis," said Matthews, who forced two charging calls. "They're a great in-the-paint, inside-out team, a great pick-and-roll team, with a great point guard and lot of scores on the inside. We really wanted to minimize their shots in the paint and really contest everything."

As a team, the Blazers had eight blocked shots.

Marcus Camby had three blocks to go along with 12 rebounds before leaving in the third quarter with a sprained ankle.

Williams said a lack of ball movement was key.

"We had 17 assists," he said. "I have stressed all year that if we don't make our passes, then we're not as good of a team."

The Jazz led 27-20 at the end of the first quarter thanks to 61 percent shooting. Williams and C.J. Miles both hit 3-pointers and reserve center Mehmet Okur hit a pair of jump shots in his first action on the home court since last season's playoffs.

"I felt a lot better than the first couple of games," said Okur, who returned to action Dec. 17 - eight months after rupturing an Achilles' tendon - only to miss the last two games because of an ankle injury. "I make a couple of baskets but second half my legs kind of got tired and I missed couple of easy baskets."

Okur played 17 minutes and finished with six points, five rebounds and four turnovers, while Utah's other big men, Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, had 11 points apiece.

"I thought (Millsap and I) both played great D (on Aldridge)," Jefferson said. "He just got on a roll. We got them again Thursday, so we just got to be ready to play, have more energy than we did tonight."

NOTES: Miller is a former University of Utah star who led the Utes to the 1998 NCAA championship game. ... Camby is listed as day-to-day. ... The Jazz are now 17-5 under Sloan in their first game back after Christmas. ... Rudy Fernandez had 11 points in Portland's 17-9 second-quarter run on 4-of-4 shooting. ... Williams started the game 5 of 5, including 3 of 3 on 3-pointers.
