烈西要3支男双进军奥运会 ...
Men’s doubles best chance for Olympic gold
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: The men’s doubles event has been identified as the best chance for Malaysia to capture a gold medal in next year’s Beijing Olympic Games.
Hence, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) want three doubles pairs to qualify for next year’s Olympics for the first time.
Best bet: Koo Kien Keat (left) and Tan Boon Heong, currently second in the world rankings, are on track to qualify for next year’s Beijing Olympic Games.
To achieve that, Malaysia will have to see all three doubles pairs ranked inside the top four of the world rankings by the end of next April.
One country can have two entries in any event at the Olympics provided they are ranked in the top-16. However, the exception to this ruling is when one country has three of their singles or doubles players ranked in the top-four. Then that country will be allowed to have the maximum of three entries.
Although the qualification rules have been tightened for Beijing, national head coach Yap Kim Hock believes that Malaysia can get three doubles pairs in the top-four to set up a possible gold medal run in the Games.
The field of qualifiers for the doubles events in the Olympics have been reduced to 19 pairs.
“The Chinese players currently have three entries all ranked inside the top three in the men’s singles, women’s singles and women’s doubles.
“Our best chance of getting the maximum entry of three is in the men’s doubles.
“If we can three pairs to qualify, our chances of fighting for the gold in the Olympics will definitely be stronger,” said Kim Hock.
Having three Malaysian pairs inside the top four would mean they would not meet each other until the semi-finals stage.
“We also want to avoid the situation of having two Malaysian pairs fighting in the quarter-finals,” said Kim Hock.
Malaysia have never been represented by three pairs since badminton made its Olympic debut in Barcelona in 1992.
Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock featured in Sydney in 2000.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah and Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng were the men’s doubles qualifiers for Malaysia in Athens in 2004.
The Olympic qualifying campaign started this month with the Singapore Open.
Malaysia can certainly place their hopes on the men’s doubles event judging by the recent strong performances of the shuttlers.
All-England champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and veteran pair Tan Fook-Wan Wah, the Asian Badminton Championships winners, are already on track as they are ranked second and fourth respectively in the world rankings.
Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock are ranked 14th while the newly-formed combination of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Latif are ranked 44th after just three tournaments.
Fairuzizuan and Zakry have proven they can be world-beaters by beating world number two Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark and former Olympic champions Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan to reach the final of the Indonesian Open recently. They lost narrowly to current world champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun in the final.
Chong Ming-Choon Eng, who won the New Zealand Open on Sunday, should break into the top 25 in the world rankings today. They are currently ranked 31st in the world while Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui are ranked 91st.
“We have five pairs who are eligible to play in the main draw of the Super Series events and we will send all of them to tournaments to get the points to qualify for the Olympics.”

Koo-Tan keep a low profile
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky will leave no stones unturned in his bid to help national men doubles Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat maintain their world number two ranking until the World Championships.
To keep them fresh, Rexy has entered them in only two tournaments before the Aug 13-19 world meet at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
They will play in the Sudirman Cup in Glasgow from June 11-17 and the Thailand Open from July 3-8 but will skip the China Open scheduled for July 10-15.
“All the World Championships-bound men doubles pairs will only go for selected tournaments. I do not want to over-tax them before the world meet,” said Rexy.
“Boon Heong-Kien Keat will skip the seventh leg of the Super Series in China (July 10-15). I want them to be fresh for the challenge at the world meet. If they can do well in the next two tournaments, they will stay among the top two and get a good seeding before the world meet,” said Rexy.
With only two tournaments to impress, Boon Heong, who is coming back from a five-day break due to severe headache and fever, has vowed to give better performances.
“My conditions has not been very impressive since winning the back-to-back All-England and Swiss Open titles. There have been a lot of activities and but not much training. I am still not at my best yet,” said the 20-year-old Boon Heong.
“I did not play well in the recent tournaments (in Singapore and Indonesia Opens). We were beaten easily in the semi-finals of the Indonesian Open (by China's world number one pair of Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng).”
At the Singapore Open, the Asiad gold medallists went down to Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif in the first round.
Despite a dip in form, Boon Heong-Kien Keat, who are currently ranked second behind Cai Yun-Haifeng, are still seen as Malaysia's best bet in the world meet.
“It will be quite tough for us to overtake the Chinese in the world standings. But it is all right. We will be happy if we can maintain the world number two spot before the world meet,” said Boon Heong.
“That means we will have to do well in the Sudirman Cup and the Thailand Open. Hopefully, we will give a better showing.”
Three other pairs gearing up for the world meet are veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Fairuzizuan-Zakry.
All three pairs will only feature in the China and Thailand Opens. |
