Nets-Jazz notebook
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday November 18, 2010 12:35AM
THE FACTS: Paul Millsap recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz to a 98-88 win over the New Jersey Nets on Wednesday night. The Jazz had a balanced scoring effort, as each of the team's starters were in double figures. Deron Williams had a team-high 23 points and eight assists. Anthony Morrow led the Nets with 24 points, while Devin Harris had 19 points and eight assists.
QUOTABLE: "aul is one of those guys that just comes and works all the time. He's a pleasure to work with because he comes and works every single day he comes to practice, tries to make himself better"
-- Jazz coach Jerry Sloan on Millsap
THE STAT: 5. The Jazz took impeccable care of the basketball against the Nets, committing just five turnovers. They had just one turnover in the first half.
TURNING POINT: Utah led for nearly all of the final three quarters, but couldn't shake the scrappy Nets until late in the game. The Jazz took their biggest lead at 71-58 in third quarter, and needed the cushion, as New Jersey got within five points in the final three minutes. Raja Bell's 15-foot jumper with two minutes left in the game made it 93-86, and finally put it away.
QUOTABLE II: "We hold them to 40 percent shooting from the field and give up 98 points. But we couldn't drop it in the ocean as a team tonight. Shooting 37 percent from the field is not good."
--Nets coach Avery Johnson on his team's solid defensive effort and struggles on offense
HOT: Nets center Brook Lopez was unstoppable in the first half, as he scored all of his 17 points before the break.
NOT: Lopez made almost no impact on the game in the second half, as he got in foul trouble and watched the majority of it. Forward Travis Outlaw continued his up-and-down season as he missed his first 10 shots and scored three points. Jazz forward C.J. Miles shot 1-for-7, scoring two points, before leaving the game midway through the second quarter with a strained lower back. He did not return.
FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Outlaw, who entered Wednesday's game ranked sixth in the league in 3-point percentage, continued to frustrate his fantasy owners. He had scored an average of 23.3 points while shooting 58.3 percent in the Nets' previous three games. He was 0-for-5 from 3-point range.
ROOKIE WATCH: It was mostly a quiet night for rookies, but first-year Jazz forward Gordon Hayward did earn a deafening cheer from his home crowd. He scored with a left-handed dunk in transition to give Utah an 81-70 lead early in the fourth quarter. It was his only basket of the night.
NOTABLE: Utah is 5-1 when giving up fewer than 100 points. It was the first time this season that all five Jazz starters scored in double figures. Utah shot 1-for-12 from 3-point range. The Nets outrebounded the Jazz 18-11 in the first quarter and 57-44 for the game. New Jersey had just 11 assists.
UP NEXT: For the Nets, Friday @ Kings, Saturday @ Nuggets, Tuesday vs. Hawks. For the Jazz, Friday vs. Spurs, Saturday @ Blazers, Monday vs. Kings.

Jazz-Spurs notebook

By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday November 20, 2010 12:37AM
THE FACTS: Tony Parker had 24 points and seven assists, and Tim Duncan became San Antonio's all-time lead scorer as the Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 94-82 on Friday night.

Duncan, who had 19 points and 14 rebounds, passed David Robinson to become the Spurs' franchise leader in points at 20,797. He also became San Antonio's all-time leader in games played with 988.

Deron Williams led the Jazz with 23 points and five assists.

QUOTABLE: "You don't notice him too much, but he had 19 (points) and 14 (rebounds). There's no flash, no beating the chest. Just go up and down the court and go home and get a sandwich. That's what he does."
-- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich on Duncan.

THE STAT: 46-31. The Spurs handled the Jazz on the boards, holding a 46-31 advantage over them. San Antonio recorded 16 of its rebounds on the offensive end. Utah had just five offensive rebounds.

TURNING POINT: The Spurs pulled away by making all the hustle plays down the stretch. After Duncan put San Antonio up 83-76 with a 6:17 left in the game, DeJuan Blair stole a lazy entry pass on defense. That steal led to a layup by Parker. Later in the fourth, Richard Jefferson kept a possession alive with an offensive rebound, and Manu Ginobili made Utah pay with a runner to make it 91-81 with 2:05 left in the game.

QUOTABLE II: "Tony was great. When we really got stagnant, he kind of got some hoops going and made some big shots for us to extend our lead in the fourth. He's been that way all year long. He's been playing his best basketball of the last couple of years. I think he's feeling really good."
--Duncan on Parker's play on Friday night and throughout the season.

HOT: Parker shot 11-for-17 and consistently killed the Jazz off the dribble to generate his own points and set teammates up for good shots. As a team, the Spurs are 10-1 and off to their best start in franchise history.

NOT: San Antonio's Matt Bonner shot 9-for-9 from 3-point range in the Spurs' previous two games against the Thunder and Bulls. He couldn't find his stroke against the Jazz though, as he shot 0-for-6, including 0-for-3 from 3-point range. The Jazz dug themselves an early 19-6 hole by missing nine of their first 12 shots.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Parker continued his stellar play, recording his fifth straight 20-plus point game. His assists, rebounds and shooting percentage were also beneficial to fantasy owners. After sitting most of his team's 103-94 win over Chicago on Wednesday night, Blair redeemed himself to his fantasy owners. He bettered his season averages with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

GOOD MOVE: Popovich played all of his starters at least 27 minutes and only brought four players off the bench. His reserves didn't give him much while they were in there, so he stuck with his standouts.

BAD MOVE: The Jazz tied the game at 68-68 late in the third quarter after Williams and Paul Millsap each converted three-point plays, and their home crowd was in a frenzy. But Ronnie Price stifled Utah's momentum when he fouled Ginobili far away from the basket while the Jazz were in the penalty with 2.7 seconds left in the quarter. Ginobili made both free throws to put San Antonio ahead by two going into the final period.

ROOKIE WATCH: Gary Neal was the only first-year player to get any playing time. He had two points, three rebounds, an assist and five fouls in a little less than 14 minutes for the Spurs.

NOTABLE: The Jazz defeated the Spurs all four times they played last season, but had that streak snapped. Utah scored season lows (14 points) in both the first and fourth quarters.

UP NEXT: For the Spurs, Saturday vs. Cavaliers, Monday vs. Magic, Wednesday @ Timberwolves. For the Jazz, Saturday @ Blazers, Monday vs. Kings, Wednesday vs. Hornets.

客场龙又上演逆转好戏~ CJ Miles 人来疯三分球 10中7  带领 Jazz 第四节反超Blazer 103-94

Jazz-Blazers notebook

By Steve Brandon, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday November 21, 2010 2:01AM
THE FACTS: Utah's C.J. Miles went 5-for-5 on 3-pointers in a 17-point fourth quarter that lifted the Jazz from a 74-65 deficit to a 103-94 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night at the Rose Garden. Utah's 38 points in the final period were the most allowed by the Blazers in any quarter this season.

QUOTABLE: "We're asking him [forward LaMarcus Aldridge] to do a lot, and I don't think that's fair. We definitely need our best player [guard Brandon Roy] when he's available, but he has to take care of his body."
-- Portland center Marcus Camby.

THE STAT: With Roy resting an ailing knee, the Blazers have been running most of their offense through point guard Andre Miller and Aldridge. Those two combined Saturday for 13 turnovers (a career-high eight by Aldridge), with 11 assists (nine by Miller).

TURNING POINT: After Portland made an 11-4 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, the Blazers hoisted 13 of their 23 fourth-quarter shots from 20 feet or more and lost their momentum, the lead and the game.

QUOTABLE II: "I was doing that at some point, too. Sometimes numbers do lie."
-- Portland guard Wesley Matthews on Miles, who came into the game shooting .279 from behind the arc but made 7-for-10 3s.

HOT: Camby, the 36-year-old center, had a game-high 14 rebounds, giving him four straight games with 10 or more, and 57 in those four games.

NOT: Matthews went 0-for-6 on 3-pointers, looking overly eager to beat his former team (he played for Utah last season as a rookie).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Aldridge is getting more opportunities to be a lead player, especially on the nights when Roy takes off to rest his knees. He took a game-high 21 shots Saturday and led Portland with 24 points, adding 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. One warning: He's averaging 39 minutes, and hopes to go down to 34 or 35 once injured center Joel Przybilla is about to suit up.

GOOD MOVE: Portland coach Nate McMillan put the bigger Matthews on Utah point guard Deron Williams, leaving Miller on Raja Bell defensively. Williams scored 12 points, 11 under his season average, and was 3-for-13 from the field, and Bell didn't hurt the Blazers, scoring nine points.

BAD MOVE: McMillan didn't do anything to stop the Blazers' fourth-quarter skid. After the game, he chastised his players for losing track of Miles in transition, settling for jump shots and turning over the ball.

ROOKIE WATCH: Armon Johnson, the second-round pick from Nevada, had a decent 14 minutes off the bench, getting eight points on 3-for-6 shooting, plus four rebounds and one assist, with no turnovers.

NOTABLE: The Blazers have managed to rebound well on most nights, even with Greg Oden (knee surgery) and Przybilla (knee rehab) expected to make his 2010-11 debut next week. Portland outrebounded Utah 24-6 on the offensive boards to help the Blazers lead 17-6 in second-chance points and 46-34 in scoring in the paint.

Kings-Jazz notebook
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Tuesday November 23, 2010 12:36AM
THE FACTS: C.J. Miles came off the bench to score 20 points and Al Jefferson had 19 points and eight rebounds as the Utah Jazz beat the Sacramento Kings 94-83 on Monday night.

Utah started the second quarter with its second unit of Miles, Earl Watson, Ronnie Price, Francisco Elson and Kyrylo Fesenko and the players provided some energy. Only Jefferson was subbed in for Elson in the quarter's first eight minutes, and the reserves built a 43-32 lead.

Sacramento was led by rookie DeMarcus Cousins, who had 18 points and nine rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "Obviously a win is a win, but I thought our second group kind of gave us some life in the first half. It seemed like they ran the floor much better. Our execution in the first part of the game was really not much."
-- Jazz coach Jerry Sloan on his reserves' play in the second quarter.

THE STAT: 24-10. The Jazz had their transition game working against the Kings, outscoring them 24-10 in fast-break points. The Jazz forced 15 turnovers to help them get out and run. The fast-break numbers are skewered because Utah put on the brakes after leading by 22 going into the fourth quarter, and allowed just four fast-break points by the Kings in the first three quarters.

TURNING POINT: Utah started to pull away during what was a dreadful second quarter for Sacramento. The Jazz outscored the Kings 18-8 in the final 7:32 period to take a 49-37 lead into halftime. Sacramento made just two baskets during that span. In the third quarter, the Jazz put the game away when Andrei Kirilenko sank two free throws, and Deron Williams and Paul Millsap each made layups during a 6-0 mini-run to make it 67-50.

QUOTABLE II: "The Jazz did what they do. They executed and I thought that we defended as well as you could reasonably expect to defend but we couldn't make baskets tonight. Shoot 35 percent and you're not going to come in and beat the Jazz."
-Sacramento coach Paul Westphal on his team's performance.

HOT: Miles followed an outstanding performance with another quality outing. He made seven of his first nine attempts and shot 8-for-13. Miles, after struggling with his shot for much of the season, broke out of a slump with 25 points and seven 3-pointers against Portland on Saturday.

NOT: The Kings have gone cold since winning three of their first four games. They have now lost eight of their last nine games. They let Monday's game get away from them when they shot 4-for-22 in the second quarter.

For the Jazz, Williams missed six of first seven shots.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Sacramento's Tyreke Evans disappointed his fantasy owners for the second straight game. He scored just 11 points on 3-for-12 shooting. He had four rebounds and four assists, both of which were below his season averages.

GOOD MOVE: Sloan stuck with his second group longer than usual in the second quarter and it paid off. Miles scored 13 of his points during the period, and the reserves got after the Kings defensively.

ROOKIE WATCH: Cousins, the fifth player selected in the 2010 NBA draft, played 29 minutes and his 18 points were a career-high. Four of his rebounds came on offense, and he shot 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.

NOTABLE: it was win No. 1,200 for Sloan as a head coach with 1,106 of them coming with the Jazz. The Kings have outrebounded their last six opponents. They had a 50-39 edge over the Jazz on the boards. Sacramento has not led at halftime in any of its 13 games. Utah committed just one turnover in the first half and finished with seven.

UP NEXT: For the Kings, Thursday at Clippers, Saturday vs. Bulls, Tuesday vs. Pacers. For the Jazz, Wednesday vs. Hornets, Friday vs. Lakers, Sunday @ Clippers.
