Short-handed Jazz tie series by beating Nuggets
By ARNIE STAPLETON
AP Sports Writer

DENVER (AP) -- With Utah running out of big bodies, Deron Williams carried an even bigger load in leading the Jazz to a 114-111 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night in Game 2 of their Western Conference playoffs.

Williams had 33 points and 14 assists and Carlos Boozer added 20 points and 15 rebounds as the injury-riddled Jazz tied the series at a win each with the series shifting to Salt Lake City for Game 3 on Friday night.

Chauncey Billups' 3-point attempt from the top of the key in the closing seconds hit off the back iron and the Nuggets walked dejectedly off the court.

Williams and Kyle Korver made two free throws each in the final 11 seconds to hold off the Nuggets, who had overcome a 14-point third-quarter deficit to take a 102-98 lead with 4 1/2 minutes left.

Utah was playing without two of its most experienced playoff performers in forward Andrei Kirilenko (calf), who is out for this series, and center Mehmet Okur, who tore his left Achilles' tendon in Game 1 and is done for the playoffs.

The Nuggets couldn't capitalize as Kyryo Fesenko played effectively on Nene, and Carmelo Anthony was flustered despite scoring 32 points just 48 hours after his playoff-best 42-point performance in the opener.

Anthony made 14 of 15 free throws but was just 9 of 25 from the field.

Denver is 1-11 all-time when Anthony fouls out and he was whistled for his sixth foul with 25 seconds left and the Nuggets down by a point.

The officials blew the call, however. C.J. Miles stepped out of bounds before Anthony fouled him, but the crew didn't see it and Miles made both free throws for a 110-107 lead.

Trailing by 12 points at halftime, the Nuggets floundered through the first 7 minutes of the second half, falling behind 76-62 on Boozer's putback dunk before using a 14-0 run to tie it.

J.R. Smith hit a long 3-pointer during the run, and Anthony stole the ball at the other end, nearly lost it several times dribbling through traffic up court but still managed to put a rim-rattling floater through the net to make it 76-71 and force the Jazz to call a timeout.

When they returned to the court, the Nuggets continued their run and Anthony's four free throws tied it at 76 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter.

Williams ended a 5-minute scoring drought for Utah with two free throws, and the Jazz recovered to take an 88-82 lead into the fourth quarter thanks to Korver's three jumpers in the final 90 seconds.

The Jazz shot 68 percent in the first half and took a 63-51 lead after closing the half on a 17-3 run that had Denver's fans booing them through the tunnel almost as much as they jeered the officiating crew moments later.

Boozer had four baskets in the run, and rookie Wesley Matthews swished a wide-open 3-pointer from the left corner as the crowd sat in stunned silence as the short-handed Jazz manhandled the Nuggets on both ends.

During Utah's run, Smith missed an uncontested layup, Billups picked up uncharacteristic fouls on both ends of the court and the Nuggets couldn't even get off a final shot, whistled for a shot-clock violation with half a second left in the first half.

Fesenko, who packs 300 pounds on his 7-foot-1 frame, gave the Jazz more bulk inside after they allowed 52 points in the paint in the opener.

"I'm not going to expect him to go out and get 20 rebounds. I think that's unfair. Or get 20 points," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said before the game. "Just come and play hard, try to understand what we're doing. Try not to make any mistakes."

After Anthony's big game in the opener, the Jazz talked about being more physical with him in Game 2, although Nuggets acting coach Adrian Dantley was skeptical they could do that effectively with young players Matthews and Miles: "They're not Kirilenko. They're not Matt Harpring," Dantley said.

They were just as effective on this night, however.

NOTES: Utah managed four offensive rebounds in Game 1 and six in Game 2. ... The Nuggets had won five straight over the Jazz at the Pepsi Center. ... Denver was 21-1 with 25 or more assists in the regular season. With 22 Monday night, they're 1-1 in the postseason.

Deron William (24分10助攻) 和 超级候补 Paul Millsap (22分19篮板) 带领爵士在主场击败金块,系列赛领先 2-1

Jazz reserves spark short-handed Utah to 2-1 series lead
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday April 24, 2010 2:46AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- It doesn't matter how shorthanded the Utah Jazz are in the NBA playoffs, especially when Deron Williams plays at an All-Star level, and they get monumental contributions from unexpected sources.

Like Paul Millsap.

Millsap had career playoff highs of 22 points and 19 rebounds to lead Utah to a 105-93 win over Denver in Game 3 of the first-round series between the two teams. Game 4 is Sunday, and the Jazz have a 2-1 lead in the series.

Utah got off to a rocky start, as Denver opened the game on a 7-0 run, and built its biggest lead of the game at 27-16. Carlos Boozer missed his first five shots, but Millsap's play erased many of Utah's early ills.

"The way Paul came in and played the game, it didn't matter," Boozer said. "He played like that, it didn't matter what the rest of us did. He played a monster game."

Millsap's first half was especially impressive. He had 18 points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting. He also had eight of his rebounds.

"I just wanted to be aggressive, establish myself down low," Millsap said. "They were kind of timid down there so we attacked them."

The Nuggets' focus on defense was to double Williams, and to stop his dribble penetration. That left things open for Millsap near the basket, and for Boozer when he got going in the second half.

"We kind of have a feel for what they are doing," Millsap said. "They are doubling Deron and that helps put the numbers in our favor. If they want to double him, we will take the numbers."

Williams had another big game in the series with 24 points and 10 assists. Despite the extra attention the Nuggets paid to him, Williams still mostly had his way against them.

"Obviously, when Paul came in the game we started getting some stuff because Deron was terrific getting him the basketball, and he made some great moves to get to the basket," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They made a commitment to try and keep Deron boxed in. Deron did a great job of getting the ball to the right people."

The Jazz quickly erased their early 27-16 deficit. They went on a 15-2 run that took a little more than five minutes and was bridged by the first and second quarters. Millsap scored eight of Utah's points during the spurt, and rookie Wesley Matthews hit a big 3-pointer late in the first to give the Jazz a boost.

Utah took control with a dominant third quarter. The Jazz held the Nuggets to 33 percent shooting and forced six turnovers during the period. Williams had 10 points and sparked two 8-0 runs. The second gave the Jazz a 70-56 lead.

"Our defense got us going," Boozer said. "We got back (in transition), got some stops, made them shoot some tough ones. Our defense got us going and our offense followed suit."

The Jazz, without starters in Mehmet Okur (done for the season) and Andrei Kirilenko (hopes to return if the series goes six or seven games), got a balanced effort outside of Williams and Millsap. Boozer had 18 points and eight rebounds after missing his first five shots. Matthews had 14 points and made three 3-pointers.

Utah also got a spark from Kyrylo Fesenko, who had nine points, five rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes of play.

"We had a lot of guys play well when you look at the whole picture," said Sloan. "Deron was sensational and so was Paul. We had a lot of guys that really filled in."

The third quarter was disastrous for the Nuggets, who only trailed by four points at halftime.

"That third quarter was frustrating," said Denver guard Chauncey Billups, who scored 25 points. "They opened up that lead. You go from having a pretty good first half to ? bam ? you're down 16 on the road."

Carmelo Anthony also had 25 points for the Nuggets, but picked up his fifth foul with 1:05 left in the third quarter. By then, the game was pretty much decided.

"What I'm disappointed in is the way we failed to compete tonight as a team," Anthony said. "We came out in the third quarter and had a chance to keep the momentum going. They made a run and we just started looking back from there."

The Nuggets can only look ahead now and try to regain homecourt advantage in the series. After Sunday, the series returns to Denver for Game 5 on Wednesday.

Jazz share the wealth in dominant Game 4 victory

By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Monday April 26, 2010 2:14AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz withstood a fast start and a late rally, and now have the Denver Nuggets on the brink of playoff elimination.

The cornerstones of the Jazz franchise -- Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer -- each had double-doubles to lead Utah to a 117-106 win over Denver in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series on Sunday night. The Jazz took a 3-1 lead in the series with Game 5 being played in Denver on Wednesday.

The series wasn't expected to play out this way with Utah being down two starters in Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko, but the Jazz are in complete control.

"It feels like it (the Jazz being in control) but at the same time it can be deceiving," said Jazz forward C.J. Miles. "We're going back to their home floor, where they can easily win a game and make us have to come back here (for Game 6)."

If the Jazz play in Game 5 the way they did in the middle quarters on Sunday night, the series will be over.

Utah dominated the second and third periods, playing outstanding team basketball. Williams, who finished with 24 points and 13 assists, once again ran the show. He picked apart the different looks the Nuggets threw at him, getting all of his teammates involved in the offense.

The Jazz had five players score in double figures and dished 24 assists. That total doubled the number of assists the Nuggets had in the game. Carlos Boozer was Utah's top scorer, as he had 31 points and 13 rebounds.

"We're putting ourselves in a good position to win the series," Williams said. "Steal one on the road -- that's what we want to do. But we protected home court, and now we're going back 3-1. The series isn't over. We've still got to get ready to play."

The Nuggets started Game 4 on fire, making seven of their first nine shots. But they then reverted to the same problematic style of play that plagued them in Game 3 on Friday. Denver's ball movement slowed to a halt. They had just one assist in the third quarter, and had a total of seven after three periods.

"I can go on and on with what went on out there," said Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony. "They (the Jazz) got everything they wanted out there. They played hard. You have to take your hat off to them."

A 10-0 run by the Jazz late in the first quarter put them in control. Boozer scored off of a touch pass from Wesley Matthews to put Utah up 24-23, and the Jazz never trailed again. Kyle Korver capped the spurt with a 3-pointer, giving Utah a 31-23 lead.

The Jazz led by as many as 20 in the third quarter before the Nuggets cut it to seven in the fourth. Denver made it close in the final period, thanks to Anthony's 39 points and 11 rebounds and a late surge by Kenyon Martin, but couldn't get a couple of key stops to make it really interesting.

"It looked like we were going to run out of gas before we finished the game, but I thought that we ended up having a good finish," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "C.J. made some big plays and fortunately we made some free throws to be able to finish it off."

A couple of those free throws came from Kyrylo Fesenko, who gave the Jazz a 111-100 lead. He was the right guy for the Nuggets to foul, as he missed three attempts earlier in the game, but he showed some poise by draining both of them.

"After I made the first one, I was so happy I made it," Fesenko said. "After I made the second one, I realized we're going to win this game."

Miles had 21 points for the Jazz on 8-for-15 shooting. Matthews had 18 points and no turnovers in a little more than 42 minutes of play.

Anthony gets the help he wanted in Nuggets' win
By ARNIE STAPLETON
Posted Apr 29 2010 1:37AM
DENVER(AP) Carmelo Anthony got the help he was begging for, J.R. Smith found his long-range touch and the Denver Nuggets avoided elimination with a 116-102 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.

The Nuggets, trying to become the first team in four years to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the playoffs, sent the series back to Salt Lake City for Game 6 on Friday night despite losing center Nene to a sprained left knee in the first half.

Anthony had 26 points and 11 rebounds, Smith made four big 3-pointers among his 17 points, and Chauncey Billups had 21 points for the Nuggets.

Denver won a game in which it was facing elimination for the first time since the 1994 Western Conference semifinals against Utah. The Nuggets had lost eight straight elimination games, six since Anthony joined the team in 2003.

After infighting and insults dominated their locker room in the aftermath of their two losses at Salt Lake City, the Nuggets were a much more cohesive group even in the face of another outstanding performance by Utah's Deron Williams, who declared after shootaround that he was the best point guard in the NBA right now.

The Nuggets won't disagree.

After watching him average 27.6 points and 12.0 rebounds over the first four games of the series, the Nuggets put Billups on Williams from the start instead of Aaron Afflalo.

Williams said nothing would change no matter who was guarding him, and he was right, getting 34 points and 10 assists before fouling out in the final minute.

Carlos Boozer had 25 points and 16 boards for Utah. But backup big man Kyrylo Fesenko, who had played so well in the absence of Andrei Kirilenko (calf) and Mehmet Okur (Achilles' tendon) for the last three games, all Utah wins, didn't do so well Wednesday. He finished with three points and six rebounds in 20 minutes.

The Nuggets led 86-81 after three quarters before pouring it on like they did in Game 1, a 126-113 win.

The Nuggets have been helpless to curb Williams, who is the first player since Magic Johnson 20 years ago to register at least 20 points and 10 assists in each of the first four games of a playoff series.

So, the Nuggets turned to Billups, who has 138 games of playoff experience and was on one of the eight teams that overcame 3-1 playoff deficits (Detroit over Orlando in 2003).

Acting coach Adrian Dantley acknowledged the potential pitfalls to this strategy, saying Billups had to be careful not to foul Williams in transition or during his noteworthy coast-to-coast dashes.

He also put Ty Lawson on Williams, and although Lawson brought superior speed to the position, his helter-skelter play also produced some turnovers and poor possessions for Denver.

Still, the Nuggets were finally able to capitalize once again on their athleticism and quickness, something that had been stifled since the series opener, in large part because of the many whistles that forced them to keep taking the ball out of bounds.

Williams especially backed up his proclamations about being the top point guard in the NBA in the closing minutes of the first half when the Nuggets looked like they were about to take control early.

His two 3-pointers and two free throws highlighted a 12-4 run that sent the Jazz into the locker room with a 52-50 lead.

Nene sprained his left knee with 5 minutes left in the first half. He was working under the basket when Boozer's left leg slammed into his left knee. He stayed down for a few minutes, then limped to the locker room, leaning on trainer Jim Gillen.

Nene was having another quiet game, with two points and one rebound but four assists when he went out. The Nuggets said he would be re-evaluated Thursday.

Johan Petro chipped in four points and six boards with Nene out.

On Tuesday, Anthony cleared the air with his teammates, suggesting he didn't mean to point fingers when declaring after Game 4 that he needed some help in trying to beat Utah. Smith, who had tweeted about the team was selfish in Game 4, went back to benign bursts such as ``cant stop thinking bout this game coming up!''

NOTES: Kirilenko shot at Utah's shootaround and said his strained left calf is feeling better. However, he wouldn't venture a guess as to when he could return to action, saying he has yet to run up and down the court 5-on-5 with his teammates. ... Nuggets F Chris Andersen had 11 points in the first four games of the series and 10 on Wednesday night.
