(NY, Boston, Toronto, Orlando, Dallas)
Jazz

David West

Jazz play all the right notes in rout of Hornet

By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday March 21, 2010 12:57AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- It isn't supposed to be this easy at this stage of an NBA season.

Not when you're the Utah Jazz and you have two starters out of the lineup. Not when you're on the second night of a back-to-back after losing a grueling and humbling game against Phoenix. Not when your All-Star point guard is dealing with shoulder, ankle and wrist injuries.

But Utah's 70th game of its regular season looked to take about as much effort as a Sunday walk in the park as the Jazz rolled to a 106-86 victory over New Orleans on Saturday night. Utah (45-25) led New Orleans (33-38) by 34 points after three quarters before resting its starters for the full final period.

"We were aggressive all night and attacked -- defensively and offensively," said Jazz forward C.J. Miles. "We wanted to come out and make sure we got after it after last night. We had a sour taste in our mouths."

Utah's loss to Phoenix on Friday was quickly forgotten with its performance against New Orleans. The Jazz took control of the game early with a dominant first quarter. They scored 22 of their 30 first-period points in the paint. They shot 73.7 percent, and only attempted two 3-pointers.

There was hardly any need to shoot 3-pointers on this night, as the Jazz precisely executed their half-court offense and at times created what seemed to be layup parades to the basket. The Jazz finished with 60 points in the paint. Their biggest lead of the game was 35 points in the third quarter.

"We expected a bounce-back mentality from the Jazz coming into this game," said New Orleans coach Jeff Bower. "We pretty much saw that. I thought they played well. They were sharp with the passing, shooting and rebounding. They outplayed us from the beginning."

The Hornets were already shorthanded without star point guard Chris Paul for the 25th straight game because of his left knee injury. They also lost David West with 1:50 left in the first quarter when he was whistled for a flagrant two foul on Kyle Korver and ejected.

West's ejection left a seismic hole in the Hornets' interior defense and limited their options on offense. Utah capitalized.

"We knew they were limited in the post," said Jazz forward Paul Millsap, who had 22 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. "With David West out early, we knew we had the advantage down low."

The Jazz, who were without starters Mehmet Okur (stomach virus) and Andrei Kirilenko (strained left calf), certainly needed the break that their blowout victory provided. Carlos Boozer played less than 16 minutes and had 10 points and four rebounds. Deron Williams, who iced his shoulder, wrist and knees on the bench in the fourth quarter, played 30 minutes and had 17 points and 11 assists.

"It was great," Williams said of sitting out the fourth quarter. "I'd like to do that every game if I could."

Miles started in place of Kirilenko and the Jazz didn't miss a beat. Miles sank his first eight shots and scored 19 points. He also had four assists.

"My first three shots were two layups and a dunk," Miles said. "Anybody feels good after those. I was just able to get in some open spots."

Kyrylo Fesenko started in Okur's place and played 43 minutes. He tied a season-high in points with 11 and had a season-high eight rebounds.

"He did a great job today, getting down low and bangin'," Millsap said. "Fes, he's a character, but he comes out to play. When his name is called, he comes out and does the best he can, and it showed today."

Boozer, Okur lead second-half rally as Jazz top Celtics

By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Tuesday March 23, 2010 1:24AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- It didn't bode well for the Utah Jazz when their big men Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur combined for more fouls (five) than points (two) in the first half against Boston on Monday night.

Fortunately for the Jazz, Boozer and Okur quickly rebounded after halftime and led them to a 110-97 win. Boozer scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half and Okur finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

C.J. Miles also had a big game with 23 points for the Jazz (46-25), who avenged an embarrassing 19-point defeat to the Celtics (45-25) early in the season.

Utah trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half when Boozer and Okur were saddled with foul trouble. Boozer picked up his second foul with 3:38 left in the first quarter and sat for nearly the rest of the first half. Okur got his second foul less than a minute later and sat next to Boozer, waiting for the halftime break.

"It was tough in the first half for us big guys," Okur said. "It was a long first half for us big guys. In the second half, we didn't want to give up. We wanted to be active at the beginning, active on the defensive end, active on the glass. We stayed hungry."

The halftime break did wonders for both players. Okur had 11 points and seven boards in the third quarter. Boozer played the entire third quarter, contributing six points and six rebounds.

"I was so anxious (while sitting in the first half)," Boozer said. "I couldn't wait to play. I was just on the bench aching to get in there. In the second half, we came out like we were shot like a bullet out of a gun."

The Jazz scored the first nine points in the third quarter and took the lead for good when Okur hit a 3-pointer to put them up 56-54. Okur, who missed Utah's previous game against New Orleans on Saturday with a stomach ailment, also had two blocked shots in the third quarter that were converted into two points by Deron Williams and a 3-pointer by Miles.

Okur's second block came when he wasn't fooled by a move by Rajon Rondo in the paint, and Miles' 3-pointer started an 8-0 run that gave the Jazz their first double-digit lead of the game at 73-63.

Boozer had a big blocked shot of his own. He swatted a 3-point attempt by Ray Allen, then led a one-man fast break and dunked to give Utah a 95-81 lead with 6:41 remaining in the game.

"I knew they were going to throw it to Ray because they were looking for 3s at the moment and he was hot a little bit," Boozer said. "I just ran up and got a piece of it, and tried to sprint my butt off down the court and get an easy bucket. It worked out good for me."

The overall play of Boozer and Okur worked out pretty well for the Jazz in the second half.

"Boozer and Memo had some big blocks," Miles said. "Boozer being able to be on the floor without getting fouls allowed him to do what he does offensively, and it opened the whole game up and had everybody rolling."

The Jazz outscored the Celtics 33-19 in the third quarter, shot 5-for-8 from 3-point range in the period, and outrebounded Boston 16-8.

"They started the third quarter pretty electric," said Celtics forward Kevin Garnett. "You pretty much have to anticipate it. As many times as I've played here they have always been able to come back out. They came out with some energy, made shots and executed."

Utah's rally actually started in the second quarter. The Jazz scored the final seven points of the first half with Miles capping the scoring on a layup with 7.4 seconds left until halftime.

Williams' 18 points, 16 assists lead Jazz
Posted Mar 24 2010 9:48PM
TORONTO(AP) Deron Williams had 18 points, 16 assists and eight rebounds, leading the Utah Jazz to a 113-87 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

Carlos Boozer added 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Mehmet Okur and rookie Wesley Matthews had 16 points apiece for the Jazz, who won their third straight. Seven Jazz players finished with at least 12 points.

Chris Bosh celebrated his 26th birthday with a 20-point performance for the Raptors (35-35), who fell 1 1/2 games behind Charlotte and Miami in the race for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Antoine Wright had 10 of his 15 points in the second quarter for the Raptors, while Andrea Bargnani added 12 and Jose Calderon 10.

On a night where both teams donned retro jerseys, Williams and Boozer channelled their inner John Stockton and Karl Malone to make easy work of the Raptors, beating them for the 10th straight time.

Williams used his deft court vision to find teammates for uncontested layups or open 3-pointers, or to slash to the hoop himself. Boozer excelled down low using an array of layups, putbacks and short hook shots. And like Stockton and Malone, Utah's current dynamic duo didn't hesitate to use the occasional pick-and-roll to befuddle the Raptors, who looked mostly flat in front of a testy Air Canada Centre crowd.

Up 18 entering the second half, the Jazz were content to trade baskets with the Raptors for the majority of the third quarter. Utah was up 87-67 after three.

Toronto closed within 13 early in the fourth quarter, but Boozer's basket - on Williams' 14th assist of the game - ignited a 7-0 Utah run that put the game out of reach, sending fans scurrying for the exits.

Raptors coach Jay Triano knew his team would be in tough against a team that entered Wednesday having gone 27-8 over its previous 35 games. Triano said the Jazz had improved greatly since the last time the teams faced off, a 104-91 Utah triumph back on Nov. 18.

``Early in the year, they were just getting organized and understanding the system,'' Triano said before the game. ``Now they seem very polished and very disciplined with what they're doing on both ends of the floor, and obviously the record shows.''

Boozer's 10 points helped Utah take a 33-17 advantage after one. The Jazz led 61-43 at halftime.

NOTES: The Raptors donned their blue-and-white Huskies jerseys for Wednesday's game, while the Jazz went with green-and-gold road uniforms they wore for two seasons in the early-1980s. ... Raptors G Marco Belinelli missed his second straight game with a sore lower back, while F Hedo Turkoglu sat out the second half with a stomach virus. Jazz F Andrei Kirilenko was out with a strained calf muscle. ... Utah is assured a winning record for the 23rd time in the last 24 years. ... There have been 236 NBA coaching changes since Jerry Sloan first took over as Utah's coach in December 1988. Denver, New York and the L.A. Clippers have all switched coaches 12 times in that span. The Raptors are on their seventh head coach.

Granger drops career-high 44 as Pacers win fifth straight

By John Oehser, for NBA.com
Posted Friday March 26, 2010 10:44PM
INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Indiana Pacers look better by the game.

And if Danny Granger is far from the only reason, he's the most obvious -- and he was a big reason they not only looked good Friday, but beat one of the NBA's best teams doing it.

Granger, a swingman and the team's hottest player in recent weeks, gave the surprisingly surging Pacers another big-time scoring performance Friday with a career-high 44 points in a 122-106 come-from-behind victory over the Utah Jazz in front of 15,463 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

"It was definitely one of the best wins of the season," Granger said following his fourth consecutive game with 30 or more points -- all Indiana victories. "It's a process. Not only players, but teams, can get into a rhythm. We got our rhythm a little late."

But make no mistake, the Pacers (27-46) are currently in rhythm. The victory over Utah (47-26) tied their season-high winning streak at five, and their current stretch of six victories in seven games includes victories over three teams in postseason contention: Charlotte (37-34), Oklahoma City (43-27) and the Jazz.

The Jazz entered Friday having won three consecutive games and five of six.

"They play hard and they're a talented group," Jazz forward Carlos Boozer said of the Pacers. "They play together. Their future might look really bright."

On Friday, the present didn't look real bright for the Pacers. Not until late in the third quarter.

That's because for 2 ?quarters, the Jazz played solidly and consistently, inching to a one-point lead after the first quarter and extending it to seven at halftime with 14 second-quarter points from Mehmet Okur (27 points). At that point, Boozer (22 points) had 11, and while Granger had 18 points, there was little sign of a Pacers dominant second half.

But that's exactly what happened.

The Jazz led 80-68 seven minutes into the second half, but Indiana dominated thereafter, turning the game with a 28-3 run in the third and fourth quarters.

Indiana outscored Utah 54-28 in the final 17 minutes.

"I don't think we've played a better 14 minutes of basketball all year," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said.

And while a lot went right for the Pacers, Granger kept scoring and scoring. And scoring.

"I felt something going -- I felt like I could make anything," Granger said.

"He made every type of shot against us contested 3s, wide-open 3s, and he drove to the basket," Jazz swingman C.J. Miles said. "It was one of those nights. He got rolling. He has a lot of things in his game. He can do just about everything."

Jazz put hurting on Wizards

By John N. Mitchell, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday March 28, 2010 12:12AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz are fine-tuning, readying for another playoff run, trying to make sure they are peaking at the right time.

Unfortunately for them, these days the Washington Wizards simply cannot be used as a barometer for any of the above mentioned.

Coming off an embarrassing loss to the Indiana Pacers in the first game of a three-game road trip, the Jazz (48-26) had little trouble dispatching the Washington Wizards, 103-87, in Washington last night in front of 15,312 at Verizon Center.

The loss extended the Wizards' franchise record losing streak to 15 games. Washington's next two games are on the road at Houston and New Orleans, and they return home for a home game on Easter Sunday against New Jersey.

The Jazz's frontcourt had its way with Washington (21-51), which failed to break 100 points for the 16th game in a row. Utah's Carolos Boozer finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Mehmet Okur also scored 22 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Boozer was 8-for-8 from the field in the second half

Jazz Point guard Deron Williams continued his stellar play as well, finishing with 20 points and a game-high 12 assists. The Jazz had 32 assists on 39 baskets, and Utah scorched the Wizards from the field, connecting on better than 59 percent of its field goals.

"Their big guys mauled us," Wizard coach Flip Saunders said after his team was pounded 45-34 on the boards. "They are a very physical basketball team and they exploited us in that department.

Boozer, Williams lead Jazz over Knicks 103-98
By DOUG ALDEN
Posted Mar 29 2010 11:38PM
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) Carlos Boozer scored 26 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, Deron Williams added 23 points and 14 assists and the Utah Jazz took over first place in the Northwest Division with a 103-98 win over the New York Knicks on Monday night.

Paul Millsap also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Jazz, who scored 44 in the first quarter then needed to hold off the Knicks down the stretch.

The Knicks rallied from 15 points down and tied it late in the third quarter but couldn't overcome a 10-2 surge by the Jazz in the fourth.

Utah's victory combined with Denver's loss at Dallas puts the Jazz one game ahead of the Nuggets for the division lead and keeps the Jazz within a half-game of the Mavericks, who are second in the Western Conference.

Al Harrington led New York with 26 points and 17 rebounds.

It was the 50th double-double of the season for Boozer and Williams' 41st. Williams almost had his wrapped up before the end of the first quarter, finishing with 14 points and eight assists. The Jazz made all seven of their 3-point attempts and shot 17 for 20 in the period, missing as many from the foul line as they did from the floor.

But the Knicks hacked away at the lead and cut it to 64-60 by halftime, then tied it in the third.

A 3-pointer by Harrington tied it at 84, then Tracy McGrady drew a foul while shooting a 3-pointer. He made the first foul shot to tie it at 87, but missed the next two and it was still tied entering the fourth.

Utah opened the fourth with a 6-0 run and the Knicks weren't able to catch up again, but they kept it close until the final minute.

Okur hit a 3-pointer midway through the third that put Utah up 96-91 and started a 10-2 run that clinched it for the Jazz. After Rodriguez cut it to 96-93 with a layup, Boozer followed with a layup and then Williams hit back-to-back jumpers, including his fifth 3-pointer of the night to restore Utah's lead to 10.

NOTES: The Knicks announced Monday that C Eddy Curry will likely miss the rest of the season because of a right calf injury. Curry has played in just seven games this season. ... Utah F Andrei Kirilenko was out again with a strained left calf, the eighth game he's missed in Utah's last 10. ... Williams badly crossed up New York's Toney Douglas at the top of the key and set himself up for a wide-open 3-pointer that put Utah up 44-30 late in the first quarter.
