Sloan
D.Will也是...

Bucks win fifth straight, stop Jazz's win streak at four

By Rick Braun, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday March 13, 2010 12:26AM
MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) -- As a team that struggled mightily the previous four seasons, the Milwaukee Bucks used to enter games simply hoping to win. Not so any more.

Ersan Ilyasova's putback basket with 27 seconds left gave Milwaukee the lead for good and the Bucks continued their stretch as one of the NBA's hottest teams by pulling away for a 95-87 victory over the Utah Jazz Friday night at the Bradley Center.

The Bucks no longer simply hope to win, they're playing as though they expect to win.

"They [the Jazz] really came in to play tonight," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "They clearly were going for it in the fourth quarter. They got up and they got into us and we teetered just a little bit for a few minutes.

"Then we regrouped and got what we've had lately -- some big plays by several players. We were able to get the big stop when we needed it and the big hoop when we needed it. We had a lot of guys step up again."

John Salmons led the Bucks with 24 points, rookie Brandon Jennings had 23 -- including a huge 3-pointer with 3:11 left -- and Andrew Bogut posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Milwaukee won its fifth straight and 11th in its last 12 to improve to 35-29 and solidify its hold on fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

Confidence is dripping out of the Bucks, who are 3-0 on their current four-game home stand with victories over Cleveland and Boston before Friday's thriller over the Jazz.

Both teams entered the game on four-game winning streaks. The Jazz had gone 19-4 in its previous 23 games; the Bucks 16-4 in their previous 20. That represented Milwaukee's best 20-game stretch since a 17-3 mark back in 1985.

The game Friday did not disappoint.

Salmons' 3-pointer with 3:57 left in the third quarter gave the Bucks a 68-56 lead. From there, the Bucks missed their next 11 shots and 16 of their next 18.

Carlos Boozer's dunk off a pass from C.J. Miles gave the Jazz (42-23) a 78-75 lead with 6:33 left.

But the Bucks recovered strongly from there. Two free throws by Ilyasova started a 6-0 run that was capped by Salmons' steal and layup that gave the Bucks an 81-78 lead. They would never trail again.

Two free throws by Bogut gave Milwaukee an 87-82 edge, but the Jazz got a free throw from Boozer (26 points, 14 rebounds), a jumper by Kyle Korver and two free throws by Miles to tie it at 87 with 36 seconds left.

After a timeout, the Bucks got the ball into Salmons, who dumped it into Bogut. The big center got in close but met strong resistance from Boozer and his short hook rolled off.

But with the defense all diving to Bogut, Ilyasova raced in and grabbed the rebound and put it back in with 27 seconds left. Ilyasova finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes.

After a timeout, the Jazz got the ball to an open Mehmet Okur, who had 20 points. But after a 7-for-7 first half, Okur was just 3 for 9 after the break and his 3-pointer bounced off.

Salmons grabbed the rebound and made two free throws to make it 91-87 with 19.6 seconds left. Okur's miss left the Jazz at 0 for 10 on 3-pointers.

After another timeout, the Jazz got the ball to Boozer, who drew plenty of contact but no fould was called. His shot was blocked by Bogut with 13.4 seconds left, and Boozer picked up a pair of technical fouls and an ejection. The Bucks then salted the game away with four free throws.

"They're a good team, a good defensive team," Boozer said of the Bucks, who haven't allowed more than 87 points in their five-game winning streak. "Their backcourt is very explosive. Bogut has some good moves inside. I still thought we had a good chance to win the game, though."

Hot Thunder extend win streak to 5, pick up ground on Jazz
By Randy Renner, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday March 14, 2010 11:27PM
OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Oklahoma City's young Thunder continued with their "one game at a time" and "no game is more important than the other" approach Sunday, even as the Utah Jazz, just ahead of them in the standings, came into the Ford Center.
The visiting, veteran Jazz however admitted this game meant more than most with forward Carlos Boozer going so far as to say since the Jazz (42-24) and the Thunder (41-24) could meet in the first round of the playoffs, "we'd like to send a message."
The message was sent alright, but it came from the Thunder who led wire-to-wire and won 119-111 in front of a roaring sellout crowd in the Ford Center. A crowd that chanted M-V-P...M-V-P as Oklahoma City All-Star forward Kevin Durant splashed two free throws to ice the game. He finished with a game-high 35 points, the 37th time he's done that this season, extending his franchise record.
"They're a great team," Durant said. "We knew they were physical. I thought we did a good job of matching them."
The game was a hard-fought battle on both ends of the floor. The Thunder were whistled for more fouls but the Jazz complained their way to two technicals, one on coach Jerry Sloan and the other on forward Carlos Boozer.
"They're about as physical a team as we'll face," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "They play physical, tough basketball and they're coached by one of the all-time greats. Both teams really fought hard."
"We just couldn't get a stop and that's what made it difficult to win," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "We need to give them credit for who they are and what they were able to accomplish."
With the win the Thunder accomplished a couple of things. They now have the tie-breaker against the Jazz, having won the first three of the four games these two teams will play against each other in the regular season. Oklahoma City also moved to within a half-game of the Jazz for fourth place in the Western Conference.
"Tie-breakers at this point, that's not a focus for us," said Brooks, sticking to his one game at a time theme. "That's something we'll talk about later."
"It was a big game for us and they played better," Williams said. "They played better both offensively and defensively. They're a great young team."
The Thunder jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and never trailed, leading by as many as 12 points in the first half and 14 in the second.
Oklahoma City's defense was aggressive in the early going, forcing Utah into five turnovers in the first quarter and eight in the first half. The Thunder also blocked five shots and dominated in the paint and in transition, outscoring Utah 30-16 down low and 10-2 on fast breaks in the first 24 minutes.
"We were active on defense early and that got us going," Brooks said, "but they still hit a lot of shots but so did we."
In fact, Oklahoma City blistered the nets shooting a season-best 60.3 percent for the game. Utah shot 50.6 percent overall and 57.9 percent on 3-pointers. Jazz rookie Wesley Matthews was 9-for-11 overall and 6-for-7 on 3-pointers to lead the Jazz with a career-high 29 points. Forward Carlos Boozer had 18 and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The spotlight match-up though was a battle royal between point guards Deron Williams and Russell Westbrook. They matched each other almost point for point and assist for assist. Westbrook finished with 30 points and 11 assists while Williams accounted for 27 points and 14 dimes. Williams fouled out in the game's last seconds.
"It was like a wrestling match between those two," said an admiring Durant. "It was fun to watch."
"He's a great point guard," said Westbrook of his opponent, "one of the best in this league. Fortunately I had a good game." One of his best, just four points shy of his career high.
"Russell had a good game tonight," Williams said. "We couldn't contain him off the pick and rolls. He shot the ball well tonight from mid range and that made him more deadly."

Smooth sailing for Jazz in win over Wolves

By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday March 18, 2010 12:57AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz never seem to have an easy time against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Wednesday's game started out to be another struggle.

But an early wake-up call from coach Jerry Sloan and a renewed emphasis on getting the ball inside, making the extra pass and playing defense allowed the Jazz to cruise to a 122-100 win over the Timberwolves. Utah (44-24) was able to salvage a season-split with Minnesota (14-55) with the victory.

"We did a little better job in the second half trying to defend, trying to get the ball inside," Sloan said. "We started the game again trying to take all the outside shots, trying to get our averages before we started to play and that's always kind of frustrating. But we got the win and that's the most important thing."

The Jazz knew they couldn't take the Timberwolves lightly after Minnesota had won the last two meetings between the two teams in Utah. The Jazz are one of two teams, along with the Nets, that Minnesota has defeated twice this season.

Trouble was brewing for the Jazz early, as the Timberwolves went on a 12-0 run to take a 14-6 lead. A timeout by Sloan slowed Minnesota's momentum.

"He didn't have to say too much," said Jazz forward Paul Millsap, who came off the bench to lead the Jazz with 21 points. "He just gives us that look. When he gives us that look, we know what to do."

Utah regrouped from its slow start and eventually created some space between the two teams. The game was tied at 32-32 before the Jazz went on a 13-2 run. The Timberwolves missed five straight shots during the spurt, and the Jazz had five players score, including Kyle Korver, who drained a 3-pointer.

After the Jazz went up 45-34, they maintained control through the remainder of the game. The Timberwolves got within six points three times during the third quarter, but Utah ended the final threat on a 6-0 mini-run that started when Deron Williams unleashed a nasty dunk over the 6-foot-10 Al Jefferson.

Getting the ball inside in Utah's half-court sets proved to be one of the keys to the game. The Jazz got several close looks in the second half and shot 60.4 percent after the break. For the game, they scored a whopping 72 points in the paint.

"We had to put some pressure on their defense," Millsap said. "When we get it inside, good things happen -- we kick out to the wide-open shooters, guys pass and cut. When we do that we're at our best, so it's real important to get the ball down low and attack them there."

Utah was also sparked by its defense. The Jazz collected 15 steals with 10 of them coming in the second half.

Korver, who turned 29-years-old on Wednesday, scored a season-high 20 points for the Jazz. Carlos Boozer recorded his 45th double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Williams, who had nine points and 11 assists, had his 21st straight game of dishing at least nine assists. It's the longest single-season streak in the NBA since the 1996-97 season.

Not all was well with the Jazz though. They're a banged-up team as they prepare for their Friday night showdown with the Phoenix Suns. Andrei Kirilenko restrained his left calf that had kept him out of Utah's previous two games in the third quarter and did not return.

Williams suffered a mild ankle sprain and a shoulder contusion. Rookie Wesley Matthews suffered a mild left MCL sprain in the third quarter. All three are questionable for Friday's game.

"We've got some guys banged up, but we've had some guys come in and step up and play basketball," Millsap said. "It's all part of the season. I think everyone is (banged up) a little."

Matthews showed why he's a Sloan favorite against the Timberwolves.

He hurt his knee while driving to the basket early in the third quarter, and had to be helped off the floor. Following a timeout, he stayed in the game and made two free throws. On Minnesota's next possession, he stole a pass by Darko Milicic and scored on a layup.

"He was all over the place trying to do things," Sloan said. "He's having to play guys a lot bigger than he is, and he's taking on that challenge and helping us tremendously. His energy -- it's been fun to watch."

Amar'e proves to be one-man show in big win over Jazz
By Jerry Brown, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday March 20, 2010 2:36AM
PHOENIX (NBA.com exclusive) -- Suns coach Alvin Gentry doesn't think anyone should be surprised to see Amar'e Stoudemire raising his game to another level as the games left in the regular season dwindle.

That he's suddenly lifted his game out of sight this season? OK, that's new.

In a big game that the Suns had to have, Stoudemire was at his best -- scoring a season-high 44 points on only 16 shots to go with seven rebounds and two blocks in a 110-100 win over Utah that kept both the fourth-place Jazz and homecourt in the first round of the playoffs within reach.

"I've seen him do this after every All-Star break since I've been here," Gentry said. "People forget that in his last game before he hurt his eye [last year], he had 42 points. He's just one of those guys who can raise his pick up his game.

"He's playing as well as I've ever seen him now, though. He's efficient. He's aggressive. He gets himself in great post position, he's added a little jump hook to his game and he's hitting all the free throws."

Stoudemire now has five 30-plus point efforts in his last seven games, and has scored at least 19 in 22 straight, the longest such streak of his career. His string of 33 straight made free throws ended in the third, but he finished 16-for-18 from the line and made the Jazz pay every time he entered the lane.

"It's a beautiful thing for us to have Amar'e dominate like that inside," said Suns guard Steve Nash, who added 15 points and 10 assists. "He's playing with so much heart and passion for the game, it's great to see. It really looks like he's enjoying it."

Stoudemire is also enjoying some help inside. Robin Lopez, whose insertion into the starting lineup dovetails with Stoudemire's spike in productivity, added 19 points and 10 rebounds and the two players combined to hit 21-for-25 shots from the field -- many of them throwdowns.

The Jazz had no answers for Stoudemire. Andrei Kirilenko was out with a calf injury and center Mehmet Okur left with a stomach virus after 12 minutes. Backup Kyrylo Fesenko needed just over nine minutes to foul out, leaving it up to Carlos Boozer and, at times, poor C.J. Miles to deal with the job. It wasn't going to happen.

"He took it to us," Boozer said. "He dominated the game."

Utah coach Jerry Sloan felt his players made that domination easier.

"I thought it was like a pickup game," Sloan said. "Guys drove to the basket and went inside and we kind of stuck our hand out to see if we could stop them. You can't stop them; you've got to put something on them."

Sloan got physical himself in the final seconds in a strange and seemingly unnecessary scene.

Grant Hill fouled Utah's Sundiata Gaines on a dunk attempt as the buzzer sounded, Sloan was upset that Stoudemire -- long out of the game by then -- was on the floor and near the Utah bench as the officials were determining if the game had ended before the foul.

Incensed, Sloan eventually turned his attention to referee Michael Smith and eventually put a forearm into Smith's chest area, leading to his ejection.
