Jazz Obtains Future First-Round Pick from MemphisGuard Ronnie Brewer sent to Grizzlies

SALT LAKE CITY (February 18, 2010) – Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor announced today that the team has acquired a future first-round pick from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for guard Ronnie Brewer. Following the trade, the Jazz roster now stands at 12 players.

"We would like to thank Ronnie for his contributions over these past three-plus seasons," said general manager Kevin O'Connor.  "We felt that this was the right move for the future of the Jazz organization at this time, and wish Ronnie the best of luck in the future."

Brewer (6-7, 236, Arkansas), appeared in 53 games (all starts) for the Jazz this season, averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 31.4 minutes per game.  Originally selected by the Jazz in the first round (14th overall pick) of the 2006 NBA Draft, the former Arkansas Razorback averaged 10.5 points, 1.8 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 266 career games (223 starts) over his three-and-a-half seasons with the Jazz.

Jazz keep rolling despite turnovers, edge out Hornets
By Larry Holder, for NBA.com
Posted Wednesday February 17, 2010 11:57PM

NEW ORLEANS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz played one of their sloppier halves of the season committing, 14 first-half turnovers. They only average 15 per game normally.
Jazz point guard Deron Williams and coach Jerry Sloan both pointed to the careless start from tonight's game against the New Orleans Hornets as a way to get their streaking team beat.
But as the Jazz continues to pile up wins, they find a way to overcome issues as Utah toppled New Orleans 98-90 to pick up a solid set of back-to-back road wins against the Rockets and now the Hornets. Utah has to be considered one of the hottest teams, along with Cleveland, in the NBA as the Jazz are 15-2 in their last 17 games.
"It's just a sign of maturity and a sign of growing," Williams said. "We know what it takes now."
The Jazz committed 22 turnovers overall, but came out cleaner in the second half. Utah started the quarter on an 8-2 run through the first two minutes and never allowed the Hornets to take a lead the rest of the way.
"I was just trying to get everyone involved," Williams said. "I had the turnovers early and makes me a little tentative because I didn't want to keep doing it. Second half I just came out and wanted to be aggressive and get going a little bit."
Sloan added: "It's learning how to win and learning how to play things out. Our team hasn't really had to play things out. Our team hasn't really had to gut things out. I think they're doing a better job of having to do that and playing better defense at times and giving themselves a chance to win. If we tried to exchange baskets with them all of the time, it's much more difficult to win.
"It seemed like we ran our offense a little more crisp [to open the second half]. When we execute that way, 'bang, bang, bang,' and then Deron hit a couple of shots. But hey, they stayed after us and never gave up."
Hornets rookie Darren Collison, who scored 24 points and dished out nine assists, admitted the third-quarter run, though brief, served as the poison pill for New Orleans on Wednesday.
"I think it was in the third quarter when Deron Williams got it going and I take responsibility for that," Collison said.
The Jazz only committed two turnovers in the final quarter. It's the early flaws that still concern Sloan.
"They made us turn the ball over. You wonder how you can win a ball game with that many turnovers," Sloan said.
You can look to Paul Millsap coming off the bench as probably the No. 1 reason Utah stayed in the game through the sloppiness. Millsap came off the bench to go 11-for-13 from the floor for a team-high 24 points. He also added eight rebounds.
"When Paul is given a lot of minutes, he's always produced," Williams said, who scored 16 points along with 10 assists. "It's on coach to find him some time to get him out there. ... If it's Paul's night, you've got to ride with him."
Boozer added 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Mehmet Okur had 10 points in the win for Utah.

Jazz stay hot, move within a half-game of the Nuggets

By Geoff Lepper, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday February 20, 2010 2:06AM
OAKLAND (NBA.com exclusive) - -- Ronnie Brewer's presence may be noticeably absent from the Utah locker room, but on the court Friday, the Jazz didn't miss their former starting shooting guard one bit.

A day after sloughing Brewer's $2.7 million salary off to Memphis in exchange for a protected first-round pick in 2011 -- a move that prompted an angry rebuttal from Jazz star Deron Williams -- Utah methodically picked the Golden State Warriors apart in a 100-89 victory that featured a 28-2 run to begin the second quarter.

It was Utah's 16th win in its last 18 games, and moved the Jazz (35-19) to within a half-game of Northwest Division-leading Denver (36-19), owner of the Western Conference's second-best record.

"They all get paid. As long as they get their paycheck, they should be ready to play basketball," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I was proud of the way we played. We had a lot of energy."

Williams was irked that Brewer, a close friend, was shipped out for reasons of cold economics -- the move lowered Utah's luxury-tax liability to $2.3 million -- that outweighed his performance; the fourth-year guard was the only player to start in all of Utah's first 53 games, and averaged 9.5 points on 49.5 percent shooting.

"That's why I signed a three-year deal," Williams told reporters at the team's morning shootaround, referencing the fact that he left two season on the table when he signed his maximum-salary extension in 2008 in order to retain his ability to leave if things go sour.

"I think if we'd make a trade it would be something a little different than that," Williams said. "You look at all the teams that are getting better around the West and we essentially get worse, if you ask me."

The Brewer deal capped weeks of speculation for the Jazz. Carlos Boozer, whose free-agent status at season's end made him a mainstay on the rumor mill, had 30 points and 16 rebounds and admitted some relief at the team's response to losing Brewer, who was selected No. 14 overall by the Jazz in the 2006 Draft.

"We were down, man," Boozer said. "He's a brother to all of us. It's tough to lose Ronnie, but at the end of the day I told the guys we need to come out and win this game. The Warriors weren't going to feel sorry for us, so we can't feel sorry for ourselves, either."

Rookie guard Wesley Matthews took over Brewer's old starting role, which meant he got first crack at defending Warriors star Monta Ellis, who was returning from a three-game absence due to a sprained left knee.

Matthews, whose defensive tenacity was one reason Brewer had become expendable, helped hold Ellis to a 2-for-14 shooting performance and totals of six points and six assists.

But the final line of defense for Utah was an old mainstay. Andrei Kirilenko, who spent two months earlier this season coming off the bench, continued his inspired play since being reinstated as a starter on Jan. 11, tallying five steals and three blocks in addition to 22 points, five rebounds and four assists.

"robably the one single thing that's helped us the most has been starting Andrei Kirilenko," Sloan said in his strongest praise of the season for the veteran forward. "I made a mistake in not starting him at the beginning of the year. . . . Once we started starting him, he's played his best basketball for us. He's finished around the basket much stronger than he ever has."

The Warriors didn't finish much of anything. Stephen Curry tied his career-high for turnovers with eight before the halftime buzzer sounded, and finished with 10, a new, if dubious, personal record. Corey Maggette was held to 14 points and the Warriors as a whole shot 37.2 percent.

For Golden State, the loss continued a dispiriting trend: When the Warriors play teams with poor records, they look great -- see 30-point wins over the Clippers and Kings at Oracle Arena earlier this month. When they play the elite, however, things aren't nearly so easy. And they have the capacity to get out of control in a hurry, as they did Friday.

"They ran their offense like a textbook," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "Our game plan was to clog the paint, be active with our hands on steals and they put the extra shooter on the floor. That opened up that 16-, 17-footer, and they made every one of them."

TODAY HERO....C.Boozer

Hawks win in Utah for first time since 1993

By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Tuesday February 23, 2010 1:02AM

SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Atlanta Hawks had a few things working against them prior to Monday night's game against the Utah Jazz. They were coming off a devastating road defeat after blowing an 18-point lead at Golden State on Sunday. It was the final game of a four-game road trip, which can sometimes be a prime spot for mailing in a contest. They were also playing in a building they hadn't won in since 1993.Playing a full 48 minutes made those factors moot points for the Hawks.

Atlanta (35-20) had fresher legs, played stronger defense and executed better than the Jazz (36-20) in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 105-100 victory. Utah, which had won 17 of its previous 19 games, was without starters Deron Williams and Andrei Kirilenko because of injuries.

"Five players scored in doubles figures for the Hawks. Smith had 18 points and nine rebounds. Jamal Crawford came off the bench to score 17 points with four 3-pointers.

Williams and Kirilenko were both injured in Utah's 93-89 win over Portland on Sunday in which the Jazz rallied from a 25-point deficit in the third quarter. Williams was out with a bruised right thigh, while Kirilenko sat because of back spasms.

"We can't make excuses," said Jazz forward Paul Millsap. "That just gives other guys the opportunity to step up. For the most part we did a good job, but we just didn't come out with the win."The Jazz didn't come away with the win because they blew too many opportunities down the stretch. Down 99-97 with 1:16 left to play, Carlos Boozer let a possible offensive rebound slip through his hands and the ball went out of bounds. Johnson quickly made Utah pay, hitting a 14-foot runner to put the Hawks up four.C.J. Miles was fouled on Utah's next possession but missed two free throws. Millsap missed a putback on Miles' second attempt and a shot by Boozer got lodged between the side of the rim and the backboard. Atlanta won the ensuing jump ball. With Atlanta leading 102-98 with 21.1 seconds remaining, Ronnie Price missed the second of two free throws, and then crashed into Millsap, who had the rebound in his hands for a split second before it was knocked loose. Smith picked it up, and passed to Johnson, who then iced the game with two free throws.

"Well, we made a couple mistakes trying to come down the stretch and turned the ball over a couple times and missed free throws that could help keep you in there," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "But I thought our guys played hard, being short-handed and that kind of thing. I thought everybody tried to step up and play hard."

Harpring

Boozer
Boozer continues to dominate as Jazz fight off Bobcats
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday February 25, 2010 1:18AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Carlos Boozer's post-trade deadline tear continued on Wednesday night.
Boozer scored 33 points and had 16 rebounds in the Utah Jazz's 102-93 win over the Charlotte Bobcats. The Jazz (37-20) got back on track after losing to the Hawks on Monday, while the Bobcats (27-29) suffered their third straight defeat on a four-game road trip. Utah recorded its first season-sweep over Charlotte with the win.
Boozer's play was one of the main factors in Utah's victory -- along with much-improved second-half defense and Kyle Korver's torrid 3-point shooting in the fourth quarter. No longer having to think about being dealt, Boozer can relax and play ball, and it shows.
"I'm comfortable," Boozer said. "Nothing to worry about. We're comfortable. We can relax a little bit and just continue to play our game."
In three games since the trade deadline and before Wednesday's win over Charlotte, Boozer had 30 points and 16 rebounds against Golden State, 22 points and 23 rebounds against Portland, and 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists against Atlanta.
"I never had any doubt [about Boozer making it work in Utah]," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "I don't know why it keeps coming up. The only people who had doubts are the ones asking questions. I think he's a wonderful player. He's always tried to do what we ask him to do on the floor. I'm proud of the fact that he's played as well as he has."
Boozer got off to a hot start against the Bobcats, but the rest of the Jazz didn't. Utah struggled against Charlotte's zone in the first half, and trailed 53-42 at the break. The Jazz were content to settle for jumpers, and rarely tried to pound the ball inside. When they did, it worked well, as Boozer shot 6-for-6 in the first half.
"He was great the whole game," said Jazz guard Deron Williams, who also had a big game with 20 points and 12 assists. "We needed to get him the ball more. We came out and did that in the second half. When he is playing so well, it opens up a lot more things for us."
Utah also had to straighten out its defense after halftime. It was torched by Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson in the first half. Wallace had 18 points and six rebounds. Jackson had 15 points and two 3-pointers at the break.
The Jazz played with new energy on defense in the second half. Their deficit quickly went from 11 to three in the first four minutes of the third quarter because they held the Bobcats to one basket during that span. Charlotte made three buckets in the first nine minutes of the third and shot 27.7 percent in the period.
"We didn't have any deflections in the first half," Sloan said. "We sat back and they brought it to us. I thought we stood up in the second half and it gave us a chance [to win]."
A 14-foot jumper by Wesley Matthews, following a steal by Boozer, gave the Jazz their first lead since the first quarter at 61-60. Korver then helped Utah pull away.
Korver shot 5-for-6 from 3-point range with four of the bombs coming in the fourth quarter. The first 3 he hit in the fourth gave the Jazz some breathing room at 82-77. He hit two more 3-pointers during an 11-2 run that helped Utah build a 93-81 lead.
Korver, who finished with 18 points and is shooting 60.4 percent from 3-point range this season, wasn't entirely pleased with his performance.
"Until the fourth quarter I didn't think it was very good," he said. "I thought my defense was really terrible tonight. I didn't move very well, but I was able to help in other ways."
Wallace finished with 27 points to lead Charlotte. Jackson scored just one point in the second half to finish with 16.
Charlotte coach Larry Brown was ejected after picking up two technical fouls with 3:44 left in the game. He was arguing a foul call on Tyrus Thomas that gave Boozer two free throw attempts when he was tossed. Brown did not meet with the media following the game.

昨天与今天的不同是,今天D.Will体型压住K.Martin & A. Brooks来打;而昨天是被国王队新秀Tyreke Evans压住来打(Height: 6-3 Weight: 207), Evans 要比D.Will来得更壮。。。。

Jazz offense in tune in high-scoring rout of Rockets
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com

SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- No, Jerry Sloan wasn't replaced by George Karl or Don Nelson for a night. It only seemed that way.
The Utah Jazz treated their game against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night like a track meet, something that's rarely been seen during Sloan's tenure with the Jazz. It certainly worked, as Utah set a few offensive season-highs, including one for points, in a 133-110 victory over the Rockets.
Deron Williams led Utah's breakneck pace, scoring 35 points on 13-for-17 shooting. He also had 13 assists and seven rebounds.
"I think it (pushing the pace) definitely benefited us," Williams said. "They're a team that likes to slow it down and get into a lot of sets and we were able to push the tempo a little bit and get out and run. We were having fun tonight."
The Jazz (38-21) were motivated after losing in Sacramento the previous night. Williams had a subpar game against the Kings, and he was in full-attack mode from the opening tip. The Rockets (29-29) didn't have anyone who could slow him down.
"He came out really looking to attack," Houston guard Kevin Martin said of Williams. "I was like 'you're feeling it tonight, huh' and he was like, 'you know, I just had a bad game last night,' and great players in this league, that's what they do."
Williams set a career-high for points in a quarter when he scored 20 in the first period against the Rockets. He intended to look for his shot a little more than usual to get into a rhythm.
"I've been a little passive to start games and that kind of hurts me because then it takes a while to get into a groove," Williams said. "I've passed up a lot of open shots, jumpers that I usually make. I told myself today I wasn't going to pass those up."
Williams scored 10 points on 4-for-16 shooting and had 13 assists against Sacramento on Friday.
"Last night he didn't play his best game," said Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. "Tonight he came back strong and started cooking. They didn't have a guy that could stay in front of him. He just kept taking it to them. When he can get by you, he's dangerous."
The Jazz followed Williams' lead. The pick-and-roll and methodical half-court sets were replaced by running-and-gunning for a night. They took shots early in the shot clock, ran after most Houston misses and took 25 3-pointers, which can sometimes be a sore spot with Sloan.
"I guess we need to shoot more threes," Sloan said to a laughing group of media members. "We shot the ball really well. I've always felt over the years in this business that you shoot much better the second night (of a back-to-back set) than the first night. I guess that's why we shot the ball so well."
The Jazz were deadly from just about everywhere in the half-court. Utah shot 67.5 percent against the Rockets, including 56 percent from 3-point range. The team's 52 made field goals was a season-high.
Utah's previous high for points this season was the 124 it scored against Phoenix on Jan. 25. The Jazz topped that total with 6:16 left in the game when Williams scored on a layup to give them a 125-100 lead.
The Jazz were explosive throughout the night. They made 12 of their first 13 shots. They didn't blow the game open early, however, because they were extremely sloppy with the ball. At one point in the first quarter, Utah was shooting 87.5 percent but was tied with Houston at 32-32 because it had committed a whopping nine turnovers.
Utah cleaned up its play while continuing to scorch the nets. The Jazz had just three total turnovers in the second and third periods, and it helped them build a 107-92 lead after three quarters.
"Just a very poor defensive effort," said Houston coach Rick Adelman. "I think they just took it to us. We weren't mentally tough enough to guard their cuts. They got it going."
The Jazz, who had season-highs in points in a half (70 in the first half) and made 3-pointers (14), also enjoyed success in the half-court. They dished 36 assists, and mostly took advantage of what the Rockets gave them.
