Millsap takes over in Jazz win over Kings
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday January 30, 2010 1:19AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Utah Jazz forward Paul Millsap knew he'd get more chances to contribute with both Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams sidelined on Friday night.
He just had no idea he'd play the best game of his career.
Millsap tied his career-high with 32 points and had season-highs of 14 rebounds and seven assists in Utah's 101-94 win over Sacramento. It was Millsap's first start of the season and he played nearly 44 minutes for the surging Jazz (28-18).
"I knew I was going to get the ball a little more than normal," Millsap said. "I knew I would have to get guys involved and on top of that get myself involved. I just took on the challenge. I love to get out there and play basketball the right way -- and that's what everybody did."
All of the Jazz players had to step up in order to offset the absences of Boozer and Williams against a Sacramento team (16-29) that defeated the Jazz in Utah earlier this season. Boozer missed the game after suffering a moderate right calf strain against Portland on Wednesday. Williams was attending a relative's funeral in West Virginia.
Utah hardly missed a beat without its Big Two, and won its fifth straight game and ninth of its last 10.
Although Millsap credited the entire team for gutting out a win over the Kings, he was the difference in Friday's game. He shot 11-for-17, and had five offensive rebounds. He played the entire fourth quarter, and it was the second time in his career he scored 32 points.
"He got whatever shot he wanted and he got the rebound whenever he seemed to feel like it," said Sacramento coach Paul Westphal. "You can't just let a guy run all over you like he did. He dominated us and it was a great performance by him."
Millsap started 37 games for the Jazz last season, and on Friday it was almost like he never left the starting lineup. He had a streak of 19 straight double-doubles and averaged 16 points and 10.3 points in the games he started last season. It was Millsap's third double-double of this season.
"He did that last year for us," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan. "He stepped up and played hard tonight. He needs to get more minutes." |

Hustling Jazz take command, collect sixth straight win
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Tuesday February 2, 2010 1:18AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- When the Utah Jazz have a lead going into the fourth quarter, they've been nearly unbeatable this season.
They didn't have much of an advantage -- one point -- after three quarters against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night, so to pull out a victory they made all the hustle plays in the final period. They forced turnovers, blocked shots, ran the floor to get easy-basket opportunities and scored second-chance points to defeat Dallas, 104-92.
"That's what happens (when you make hustle plays)," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "You get a little energy, get a steal, get a blocked shot, that picks everyone up. Those are the kind of things that ignite your team and that's what they did tonight."
Utah (29-18) improved to 24-1 and 16-0 at home when leading going into the fourth quarter. Dallas (30-18) lost its third straight game. The Jazz have won six straight, 10 of their last 11, and they clinched the season series against the Mavs with Monday night's win.
The Jazz only led 77-76 going into the final period, but quickly ignited their crowd with hustle plays. They forced turnovers and took advantage of poor transition defense by Dallas to break the game open. Six of their first eight points in the fourth quarter were on second-chance baskets, and they built an 85-80 lead. Dallas called a timeout, but all it did was delay an inevitable game-clinching stretch for Utah.
During an 11-2 run, Andrei Kirilenko stole a pass from JJ Barea and drove coast-to-coast. He made a layup, drew a foul and converted a three-point play. On Dallas' next possession, Paul Millsap made a steal and threw an outlet pass to Deron Williams, who then got the ball in the open court to Wesley Matthews. He converted another three-point play to put Utah up, 94-82.
The back-to-back three-point plays put the Jazz in control with 6:49 left in the game.
"Those back-to-back steals, that's just helping each other on defense, being tough and winning," Matthews said. "Whenever you get a three-point play, it's a backbreaker."
Millsap, who led the Jazz in scoring for the second straight game while starting in the place of injured Carlos Boozer, said Utah's attitude about playing defense has changed since the start of the season and it was the difference in Monday's game. Dallas committed seven turnovers and shot 36 percent in the fourth quarter.
"It's the will not to lose," he said. "Guys were aggressive on the defensive end, getting up and playing guys."
The Jazz held the Mavericks to two baskets and 10 points in the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter. Kirilenko contributed by holding Dirk Nowitzki to just two points in the fourth, which came on foul shots.
"I think we concentrated on him a little more," Kirilenko said. "Everyone knows he is a great shooter and every time he gets the ball 18 feet in it's like a layup."
Millsap had 25 points and nine rebounds. Williams had 18 points, 15 rebounds and six assists. Kirilenko had another solid all-around game with 13 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. |

Streaking Jazz keep rolling with rout of Blazers
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday February 4, 2010 1:16AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Something about the Portland Trail Blazers has brought out the best in the Utah Jazz this season.
The Jazz earned their third decisive win of the season over the Blazers, 118-105, on Wednesday night. Utah (30-18) defeated Portland (29-22) by double digits in all three meetings and shot better than 60 percent in each game.
The proof is in the numbers in how well Utah has handled Portland, but the Jazz aren't sure why.
"I don't have an explanation," said Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, who continued to play some of the best basketball of his career with 22 points, a season-high eight assists and six rebounds on Wednesday. "Game-wise, we tried to be aggressive and execute our offense. Lately we're playing pretty good basketball, so those kind of things go together."
Pretty good might be an understatement by Kirilenko. The Jazz are one of the league's hottest teams, as they've won seven straight and 11 of their last 12. They beat the Blazers for the fifth straight time at home.
And the reasons why Utah has been on fire were on display against Portland, especially in the third quarter. The Jazz made 11 of their first 13 attempts in the third period with 10 of the baskets being assisted. Utah once again shared the ball, passed up decent looks for better ones, and made their shot attempts. The Jazz made 42 total shots and 32 were assisted.
Utah shot 70.6 percent in the second half, which was a credit to the team's passing, said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.
"We passed the ball real well tonight," Sloan said. "For the most part we passed it to guys that were open and we got some easy baskets. Deron (Williams) was terrific. He was terrific with the ball and he found people, as did other people."
Not all of Williams' play shows up in box scores, though he had 13 points and 13 assists against the Blazers. He ran the team's offense efficiently and earned some style points. In the third quarter, he dribbled behind his back in transition, then made a wrap-around pass to a streaking Ronnie Brewer, who dunked to give Utah a commanding 79-63 lead.
"Guys are just out there having fun," Williams said. "We're sharing the basketball and having fun. That's the most important thing."
The Jazz, who were without Carlos Boozer for the third straight game because of a calf injury, got a big game from Mehmet Okur. Okur poured in a season-high 28 points, and he did little of it from the perimeter. He took advantage of Portland being without Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla in the middle and hammered the Blazers in the paint.
Okur made just three jumpers, as the rest of his points came on dunks, layups and foul shots.
"I really tried to take what they gave me out there," Okur said. "I had open layups and dunks and I was able to finish those. It felt good."
Just about all of the Jazz players were feeling it. Okur shot 11-for-13, Kirilenko was 8-for-9 and Wesley Matthews was 6-for-6. Utah shot a season-high 62.7 percent and it wasn't the first time Utah has shredded the nets against Portland. The Jazz shot 60.6 percent in a 108-92 win over Portland in November, and 60.3 percent in a 106-95 victory over the Blazers last week. |

Streaking Jazz top Nuggets for eighth straight victory
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday February 7, 2010 1:27AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Although Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups were sidelined with ankle injuries, the Utah Jazz knew the Denver Nuggets were still plenty dangerous.
After all, the Jazz lost to the Nuggets at home earlier this season with both players out of the lineup. This time, however, Utah was able to hold off a Denver rally in the second half to win, 116-106 on Saturday night.
The Jazz won their eighth straight game and 12th of their last 13.
This win was probably the most important of Utah's streak and sorely needed by the Jazz (31-18) after they lost their first three meetings against the Nuggets (34-17) this season. Utah, even with Denver's starting backcourt on the bench, needed to show the Nuggets it could actually beat them.
"It was huge," said Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, who was back in the lineup after missing three games with a moderately strained and slightly torn right calf muscle. "They're a team that we can see in the postseason. We want to put a thought in their mind that we can beat you. If we lose all four games to them they're not going to fear us. For us to get this win it lets them know that if we play them in the postseason we can compete with you."
Although they did win, the Jazz didn't send the message they wanted to the Nuggets. They led by as many as 18 in the third quarter, but it took until the final minutes before they could put Denver away. After C.J. Miles hit a 3-pointer to give Utah an 85-69 lead in the third quarter, the Jazz went ice cold from the field. They made just two shots in the final 5:22 of third period.
Denver got within 93-90 early in the fourth quarter before the Jazz regrouped. A quick 9-2 run put Utah in command again with a 102-92 lead.
"It's wasn't the best game for us, but a win is a win and we continue our streak," said Jazz guard Deron Williams. "They're a team that's not going to quit. They're always dangerous because they score."
They can score even with two main players on the bench. Anthony, who entered Saturday's game tied with Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant for the NBA's scoring lead, missed his eighth straight game with a sprained ankle. Billups sprained an ankle while scoring a career-high 39 points in a win over the Lakers on Friday night.
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan wasn't entirely pleased that his team had so much trouble with the Nuggets.
"You look out there and see they don't have Billups and they don't have Carmelo Anthony, so we should've won real easily," Sloan said. "But they beat us here with those two guys out the last time we played them and that shows how strong their team is."
Andrei Kirilenko and Deron Williams each had 22 points to lead the Jazz. Boozer recorded his 30th double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Paul Millsap, who was back in a reserve role with Boozer back in action, had 16 points and six rebounds before fouling out. |

'Motivated' Boozer leads Jazz past Clippers
By Dan Arritt, for NBA.com
Posted Wednesday February 10, 2010 2:14AM
LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- On one end of the court was a player recently named an NBA All-Star, on the other was someone who played like it.
Carlos Boozer of the Utah Jazz lit up Chris Kaman and the Los Angeles Clippers, producing 34 points, 14 rebounds and four steals Tuesday night to lead his team to its ninth consecutive victory, 109-99, at Staples Center.
"I was motivated," Boozer said. "Chris Kaman is very deserving. He's a stud player. He's a load down there and he deserves it. I just came out and played aggressive."
Boozer, who missed three games from Jan. 29 to Feb. 3 with a strained right calf muscle, shot 13-for-17 from the field and finished one point off his season-high point total.
Kaman, who on Monday was named to the Western Conference team for the NBA All-Star game next weekend in Dallas - a replacement for injured Brandon Roy of Portland - was far from stellar in his first game since the announcement.
He scored 19 points on 5-for-14 shooting and was just 9-for-14 from the free-throw line. He also matched his season high with six turnovers.
"We just turned the ball over way too much, especially myself," Kaman said. "We just made it too easy for them."
The Clippers, who allowed 31 points off 21 turnovers in a 17-point loss to the visiting San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night, committed 16 turnovers against the Jazz, which led to 27 points. They committed 10 in the second half, when they were outscored, 57-43.
"We did turn the ball over a ton in the second half," said Clippers coach Kim Hughes, in his second game since taking over for Mike Dunleavy. "When we did turn the ball over, we were punished."
Boozer, meanwhile, seemed like his was just heating up at halftime. He had 13 points and eight rebounds in the third quarter alone, helping the Jazz (32-18) whittle an 11-point deficit to four at the start of the fourth.
"Booze was just a monster tonight," said teammate Deron Williams, who finished with 13 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. With Boozer on the bench to start the final quarter, reserve point guard Ronnie Price scored eight straight points while guarded by Bobby Brown, giving the Jazz their first lead since late in the first half. Utah coach Jerry Sloan also had kind words for reserves Wesley Matthews and C.J. Miles, who combined for 17 points.
"They were able to get a couple steals and hit a couple of 3-point shots that helped swing the momentum," Sloan said. |

Odom, Gasol help Lakers cool off white-hot Jazz
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday February 11, 2010 1:04AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- They didn't have Kobe Bryant or Andrew Bynum in the lineup and were facing the hottest team in the Western Conference.
So much for stacked odds. The Los Angeles Lakers cooled off the Utah Jazz with stifling defense, and spectacular individual games by Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol in a 96-81 victory on Wednesday night.
Odom had a season-high 25 points and 11 rebounds and Gasol chipped in 22 points and 19 boards. The Lakers (41-13) took control of the game early against a Jazz (32-19) team that had won nine straight.
"This is a good team no matter who's in or who's out of the lineup," Odom said of his Lakers. "We got a lot of guys that can play. Sometimes when you lose a guy or two your focus is kind of there as a team."
Bryant missed his third straight game with a sprained left ankle. He originally suffered the injury against Philadelphia on Jan. 29. He re-aggravated it against Charlotte last Wednesday. Bynum missed his second consecutive game after bruising his right hip against Portland on Saturday.
The Lakers aren't exactly a team that's short on swagger, but going 3-0 without Bryant has them feeling great going into the All-Star break.
"We're confident," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson. "They have an idea on what they are as an identity. We were the aggressor tonight."
It started with Odom and Gasol. Odom recorded his third straight double-double and had three three-point plays in the first quarter. Gasol controlled the action on both ends of the floor, as he blocked five shots and had four assists.
"He's the most skilled big man in the league," Odom said of Gasol. "I don't know another guy who's 7-foot-1, 7-2 and can hit lefty, righty hooks. He played great."
The outcome was hardly ever in doubt. Los Angeles took control with a 12-0 run to close the first quarter with a 31-18 lead. The spurt featured a three-point play by Odom, Gasol scoring a layup on an alley-oop, Jordan Farmar making a 3-pointer and a jumper, and Shannon Brown dunking on a fast break.
The Lakers got their running game going early, and the Jazz, who played the previous night in Los Angeles against the Clippers, couldn't keep up.
"They had more energy than us tonight," said Utah guard Deron Williams. "They played harder, competed harder and looked like they wanted the game more."
The Jazz hardly looked like the team that entered Wednesday's game as winners of 14 of their last 15. They hurried possessions, took contested and bad shots, and were pushed out of the paint by Los Angeles' length.
"They came out and got after us," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan. "We couldn't get anything going. We couldn't move hard enough to get ourselves open and they just kept putting it to us." |

HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- It was Fat Tuesday, and the Utah Jazz fattened up their already rich record by feasting on the slumping Rockets.
The Jazz, utilizing a typically balanced effort, beat the Rockets 104-95 at Toyota Center. Watching another loss wasn't an unusual experience for the 14,942 fans in attendance since it was the Rockets' sixth loss in their last eight home games.
But the Jazz have been zooming in the opposite direction, winning their fourth straight road game and picking up their 14th win in their last 16 games.
"We need to win consistently on the road," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, whose team continues its road trip tonight at New Orleans. "We have to learn that if we're going to be successful in the playoffs, you're going to have to win on the road.
"If you can't win on the road, then it's going to be tough to do anything if you get to the playoffs. You can shorten a series up really quick if you can win on the road and win at home as well."
The Jazz were able to handle the Rockets because they are more than capable of countering Houston's few reliable mismatches -- point guard and power forward.
Where the Rockets' Aaron Brooks usually has the advantage at the point because of his speed and quickness, the Jazz are able to counter with the power, strength and savvy of Deron Williams. The All-Star had a solid all-around game, finishing with 17 points and 15 assists, and wearing down Brooks over the course of the game. Brooks finished with 18 points, but shot 1-of-10 in the second half and 0-for-4 in a scoreless fourth quarter.
"Deron Williams was tremendous at passing," said Houston coach Rick Adelman. "If we take something away, they're going to find the open guy."
And at power forward, where the Rockets go with an effective rotation of Luis Scola and Carl Landry, the Jazz are simply overpowering, with Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap doing the heavy hitting.
Boozer had an "off" night, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds, but Millsap more than made up for it. Millsap, tossing bodies around in the post, had 20 points and 12 boards, pretty much matching what Scola and Landry managed together (a combined 19 points and 12 rebounds).
" aul's done that since he's been here," Sloan said. "He's got a lot of confidence on his shot out on the floor, and he shoots it well around the basket, and he's pretty clever around the basket.
"He's worked at his game. He was not that way. He was a rebounder, and that's about all he was. That's the one thing you like to see people do -- take it in their own hands and go out and make yourself better."
Whenever the Rockets tried defensively, the Jazz had a counter.
When they collapsed in an effort to contain Boozer and Millsap inside, the Jazz, who finished with 30 assists, kicked it out to snipers like Mehmet Okur (21 points, 11 coming in the third quarter) and Kyle Korver (10 points on 4-of-5 shooting).
"Kyle played very well," said Sloan of Korver, who has been struggling to get minutes after recovering from injuries. "He's been working extremely hard to get back into a groove and get his conditioning. He's been doing the work."
And the Jazz cranked up the defense, too, not only forcing 24 turnovers, a season-high for the Rockets that led to 22 points for Utah, but also holding Houston scoreless for a crucial four-minute stretch late in the fourth quarter.
"As long as we put in the effort, we're going to have a chance," Boozer said. "Like tonight, we put the effort out there and we took advantage of an opportunity." |
