a)用completing the square, you will get
( x - 1/4 )^2 + 3/4
then
x is real,
( x - 1/2 )^2 大过等于(use >= instead as below) 0
( x - 1/2 )^2 + 3/4 >= 3/4
so the expression has the same sign(positive) for all real values of x
b) ( a - x )( x - b )
= - ( x - a )( x - b )
= - [ x^2 -(a+b)x +ab ]
= - [ x - (a+b)/2 ]^2 + [(a+b)/2]^2 - ab
= - [ x - (a+b)/2 ]^2 + 1/4(a-b)^2
因为这个是一个quadratic function ax^2 + bx + c with a>0,
so the max value is 1/4(a-b)^2
c) 我不是很确定,but try try

d) let f(x) = 5x^2-200x+1969
when x = - b/2a
= 20
, that is axis of symmetry, min value is 5(20)^2 - 200(20) +1969 = - 31
so f(0) = 1969 and f(50) = 4469
therefore for 0<= x < 20 , 0>= f(x) > - 31 and for 20<= x <= 50 , -31<= f(x) <= 4469

因为你的graph最低点是你的min value
不一定是when x=0 or x=50 的时候
除非刚好 x=0 or x=50 is axis of symmetry or your quadratic function has a negative 'a'.. |

when a polynomial P(x) is divided by x^2-5x+6, the remainder is x+3. When P(x) is divided by x^2-6x+8, the remainder is 2x+1. Find the remainder when P(x) is divided by x^2-7x+12 |
