Military and police usage
"Ma'am" is commonly used to address female officers of the rank of Inspector and above in British police forces and female Commissioned Officers and Warrant Officers in the British Armed Forces http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma%27am#Military_and_police_usage 本帖最后由 AhSengSg 于 17-8-2012 02:17 AM 编辑

Both "madam" and "ma’am" are very polite forms of address . . . but "ma’am" is unacceptable in formal English. In fact, "ma’am" is much more informal than other contractions such as "I’m" and "I’ll,"[21][22] which go unmarked in dictionaries.
