KUALA LUMPUR: Bank stocks led the fall on the KLCI in Thursday morning trade as investors remained cautious of the near-term outlook.
Maybank Investment Bank Bhd chief chartist Lee Cheng Hooi said in a report that foreign selling pressure would cap any market rebound in the resistance areas of 850 and 867, while the weaker support areas were located at 835 and 845.
He added that overall weakness from the external environment continue to cast uncertainty in the markets.
OSK Research Sdn Bhd analyst Shin Kao Jack said the KLCI might eventually retrace to October 2008 low in the coming weeks.
Investors would also be looking to the industrial production index, which is scheduled to be released by the Statistics Department, for leads later today.
In the region, major indices were lower following the release of Japan’s fourth-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth figures, which fell 12.1%.
Although the contraction was smaller than the Japanese government’s previous estimates as well as that of economists, the GDP figures and China’s lower export figures pointed to a deepening recession.
At 10am, the KLCI was down 0.67% to 844.67 while Singapore’s Straits Times Index was 0.35% lower at 1,500.24.
Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.08% to 7,296.23 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 0.21% to 11,905.47.
Shanghai’s A share index dropped 1.46% to 2,107.78 and Seoul’s Kospi Index was 0.49% lower at 1,122.00.
At Bursa Malaysia, 41 counters were up, 163 were down and 100 others were traded unchanged. There were 64.73 million shares traded with a total value of RM62.66 million.
Maybank declined 16 sen to RM4.18, Public Bank fell 15 sen to RM7.15 while its foreing tranche lost 10 sen to RM7.10.
Bursa was 10 sen lower at RM4.46 while Resorts dropped 4 sen to RM1.95.
Property stocks UEM Land lost 2.5 sen to 68.5 sen, E&O fell 2 sen to 40.5 sen while KLCC Property fell 7 sen to RM2.97.
Among plantation stocks, KL Kepong was up 20 sen to RM10.20 while Asiatic fell 8 sen to RM3.96. |
