The 10 Things Liverpool Fans Need To Know About New ￡9.75m Signing Emre Can



1. He is comfortable in both defence and attack

The Germany Under-21 international would probably be referred to as a box-to-box midfielder, but his ability throughout the field is not given enough justice by that term.

Like the greats in the position such as Juventus’s Arturo Vidal or Yaya Toure of Manchester City, Can is completely comfortable in either defence or attack.

2. He is a brilliant playmaker

This ability to operate anywhere in midfield is coupled with a keen eye for a pass and therefore the versatility to function as a playmaker – either behind the striker or in a deeplying role.

Currently at Anfield the deeper position is occupied by captain Steven Gerrard, whilst youngsters Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling do the job in attack, but being able to do both makes Can extremely useful.

3. Learned his trade at Bayern Munich

Despite having earned his reputation at Leverkusen it was with Bayern that the Germany Under-21 international actually came through as a youngster, although only managed four first team appearances for the German champions before moving on.

Pep Guardiola’s side have a number of talented players that come through their ranks, but much like with Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels they’re probably regretting letting Can go – with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge having this to say about him

“Emre Can is one of the biggest talents in German football,” as quoted on the Liverpool website.

4. He has been likened to Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos

After learning his trade at the Allianz Arena it’s inevitable that comparisons have been drawn with current Bayern stars, but in this case perhaps it is not so overblown.

Can has been likened to both Schweinsteiger, for his ability to switch seamlessly between defence and attack, and Kroos for his marauding runs forward.

5. He is physically imposing

Despite still being only 20-years-old the youngster is more physically dominating than most men he will come up against, which is always considered a useful asset in the Premier League.

Standing at a little over 6 feet tall (1.84m) Can is unlikely to be unsettled when playing the likes of Chelsea or West Ham United.

6. He is extremely versatile

Not only can the starlet play almost anywhere throughout the centre of midfield, but the German has also been known to operate in defence when required.

Although manager Brendan Rodgers is unlikely to call upon this very often, it’s useful to know that Can also plays in central defence and as a left-back.

7. Experienced at international level

Although not capped for the senior side yet, the former Leverkusen man has represented Germany at every level up to and including the Under-21s.

He currently has six caps at that level and was previously captain of the Under-17s.

8. Could play for either Germany or Turkey

Although it is Germany that Can – who was born in Frankfurt – has chosen to represent thus far, his heritage means he could also play for Turkey should he choose.

Therefore national team coach Joachim Loew might want to think about securing the midfielder for his team as soon as possible.

9. Said to play with a maturity beyond his years

Due to his build and style of play it’s easy to forget just how young Can is and despite it being a cliche, he has been said to play with a maturity beyond his years.

As a youthful player he will be in good company on Merseyside along with the likes of Coutinho, Sterling and Jon Flanagan.

10. Can struggle with discipline

Despite all of these positives there is of course always a downside and that is that Can’s discipline can often go array.

His physical style of play can occasionally spill over into recklessness and don’t be surprised to see a few cards being produced.
