Luca Castellazzi (Sampdoria): It is not easy to limit a team with the offensive punch of Udinese, and Sampdoria should give some of the credit for their victory to their veteran shot stopper, who made three decisive saves, including a miraculous one on Simone Pepe.
Defence
Maicon (Inter): The Brazilian put relentless pressure on Milan by attacking them at every opportunity, pinning the Rossoneri back for large portions of them match. His efforts were rewarded with a clinical finish to kill off the match near the end of the first half.
Fabio Cannavaro老当益壮 (Juventus): It’s two weeks in a row for the Italy captain, who once again marshalled the Juventus back line with remarkable poise. He may be aging, but his experience and positioning is a wonder to behold.
Alessandro Gamberini (Fiorentina): Palermo threatened time and time again, but the center-back was on hand to close them down when needed. The 1-0 victory in Florence can be attributed as much to him as goal scorer Stevan Jovetic.
Midfield
Diego (Juventus): If any fans had doubts about Diego’s ability to compete in Serie A, they were surely put to rest by his performance against the Giallorossi. Two key goals and now a proven match winner for the Bianconeri.
Daniele De Rossi (Roma): A wonderful long range strike and a never-say-die-attitude from the talisman puts him in this week’s best XI, despite being on the losing side. He surely did not deserve to be, as he fought until the very end at the Stadio Olimpico.
Felipe Melo (Juventus): Another excellent summer addition for La Vecchia Signora. He was a great anchor in the midfield, winning plenty of balls and moving forward quickly to spark counterattacks. Sealed his Serie A debut for the club with a late goal too!
Marek Hamsik (Napoli): The Slovakian will be a future star. His dribbling, passing, and shooting ability make him one of the greatest attacking threats in Serie A at just 22, and his goal was simply astounding – dribbling three players and chipping the on-rushing goalkeeper.
Attack
Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli): The Naples native was waiting to score in front of the fans at the Stadio San Paolo, and he did not disappoint with a well-taken brace and exuberant celebrations. ‘Spectacular’ should be his middle name.
Diego Milito (Inter): He understands the game so well, a true class act on the pitch. The Argentine is not only a target man, but a creator. He split the Milan defense with two beautiful slide rule passes and also dispatched a confident penalty into the roof of the net. ‘El Principe’ is picking up where he left off last season.
Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria): He missed a penalty and still makes it onto our Team of the Week. Devastating is the only way to describe his backheel assist and right foot drive that sealed the points against Udinese.
