Jazz win fourth straight
By Steve Luhm
The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 12/04/2009 11:21:19 PM MST
It was throwback jersey night at EnergySolutions Arena, and the Utah Jazz nearly threw one back.
Seemingly, the Jazz had an easy victory in hand Friday against the struggling Indiana Pacers.
Utah bolted to a 19-point lead in the first quarter and rebuilt a 17-point advantage midway through the third.
Instead of coasting home, however, the Jazz had to hold off a desperate rally by Indiana before claiming a 96-87 victory.
Carlos Boozer finished with a season-high 35 points and rookie Wesley Matthews added 18 as Utah won its fourth straight game.
"We came out guns blazing -- a lot of energy, having fun," Boozer said. "We got a huge lead but they are a good team -- an NBA team. They came back and
made us fight for the win, but that's what we did. We did a good job of fighting for the win."
Memo Okur added 13 points and Deron Williams finished with an 11-point, 13-assist double-double as the Jazz beat the Pacers for the sixth time in the teams' last seven meetings.
Danny Granger led Indiana with 26 points, but he missed 12 of his 19 field-goal attempts. He was 3-for-8 in the decisive fourth quarter.
"We had an excellent first quarter," coach Jerry Sloan said. "But I've seen that happen a few times. You get out and think the game's going to be easy and the team you're playing comes right back."

Gomes leads Minnesota to its third victory of the season
By Jame Beilby, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday December 6, 2009 12:18AM
MINNEAPOLIS?NBA.com exclusive) -- Minnesota notches third victory of the season, breaks Utah's four game winning streak
Ryan Gomes set the pace for the Minnesota Timberwolves, scoring 23 points on 9-for-10 shooting, as Minnesota defeated the Utah Jazz 108-101. Minnesota shot 57.1 percent, improving on their previous best: 52 percent in a losing effort against Boston on November 4th.
With Minnesota's low-post stalwart, Al Jefferson, struggling for much of the game, Kevin Love's presence was a big help. It was only Love's second game back from a fractured hand that kept him out of the first 19 games of the season and he scored a double-double in both of those games. Tonight he scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Last night, Love put up 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in a loss to New Orleans.
"He's a terrific player," Jerry Sloan said. "He knows how to play basketball. He passes, sets screens, and does whatever it takes to play the game. The game is not that difficult, but we make it difficult when we try to do something sensational. He just plays and you can't get him off the court. Those kind of guys play for a long time in this league."
Minnesota trailed by 14 in the second quarter as Utah built a lead without Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer on the floor. The Wolves, however, closed the second quarter with an 11-0 run to trail by only three at half, 50-47.
Coming out of the half, turnovers by Utah led to back-to-back breakaway dunks by Corey Brewer and Jonny Flynn and a layup by Ryan Gomes led to a quick timeout from Jerry Sloan as Minnesota took the lead 55-52, extending their run to 16-0.
"If we can't guard anybody better than that, you can't even think about winning," Jerry Sloan said. "And when you keep throwing the ball to them for 25 points off turnovers, that doesn't give you much of a chance at all." |

Jazz hold off Spurs in final seconds, clinch season series
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Tuesday December 8, 2009 1:23AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- After a first half in which they trailed by 15 points, the Utah Jazz knew what they had to improve on after halftime against the San Antonio Spurs: pretty much everything.
Most importantly, the Jazz needed to play better defense. When they did, they put together their best quarter of the season and held on for a 104-101 roller-coaster win over the Spurs on Monday night. It was Utah's third victory over San Antonio in the last 32 days, giving the Jazz a season series win over the Spurs for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
The Jazz shot 15-for-19 in the third quarter, turning an eight-point halftime deficit into a 12-point lead. Utah's defensive play got its offense going, as the Jazz scored 11 points off of turnovers. The Jazz held the Spurs to 44 percent shooting in the third quarter.
"We started getting up, started guarding them a little more," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan. "They went and did exactly what they wanted to do the whole time in the first half, it appeared to me. I thought we got up and challenged them just a little bit more, and kind of got our momentum going and made some shots. It's amazing how you build on it."
Deron Williams did most of the damage for the Jazz in the game-turning third quarter, as he scored 11 points. He was 5-for-5 shooting, and one of his baskets came on an electrifying dunk in traffic that gave Utah a 74-68 lead and got Jazz fans into a frenzy.
Sloan didn't say anything at halftime to get his players charged up. But a technical foul he was whistled for in the third quarter helped change the game's momentum. After his technical for arguing a call, the Jazz outscored the Spurs 32-14 in the final 9 minutes of the third.
It was just one of many aspects of the game that worked in Utah's favor.
"We came out at halftime and felt like we didn't play our basketball," said Jazz forward Carlos Boozer. "Everything clicked at the right time. We were executing better, playing better defense, sharing the ball better, running harder, boxing out tougher, getting rebounds. Next thing you know it went from a close game to a 10-12 game for our advantage."
The Jazz took their biggest lead of the game at 86-74 when Paul Millsap hit a fadeaway from five feet out. The Spurs, however, were far from done. They went on a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter to go up 93-92, capped by a hook shot from reserve forward Matt Bonner, who scored a career-high 28 points.
From there, the two teams went back and forth until the final buzzer. Tim Duncan made two foul shots to give San Antonio a 101-100 lead with 28.2 seconds left in the game, but Williams answered with a jumper from 16-feet to put Utah ahead for good at 102-101.
The Spurs still had two chances to win it, but Tony Parker missed a jumper and Bonner fouled Boozer while trying to collect the offensive rebound. Boozer missed two foul shots, and on San Antonio's next possession it went to Bonner to win the game -- but not by design.
Bonner wasn't the first or second option on the play drawn up by Gregg Popovich and his off-balance, running jumper went in and out, and Mehmet Okur got the rebound. Okur then iced the game with two free throws with 1.5 seconds left in the game.
Boozer, who scored a team-high 27 points and had seven rebounds, made up for missing the two foul shots by forcing Bonner to take a tough shot.
"They did a good job on defense, took away our first and second options and I just tried to make a play," Bonner said. "When it left my hand it felt good. It looked like it was down and then popped out. Tough miss."
It was an even tougher loss for the Spurs, who were in complete control after two quarters. San Antonio, as Sloan said, did what it wanted early in the game. The Spurs got the ball inside to Duncan early in possessions, and he scored 13 of their first 18 points. San Antonio shot 53 percent in the first half.
The turnovers the Spurs committed in the third quarter continued a troubling trend for them. They had 16 turnovers against Utah, and those followed 19 against Boston and 19 against Denver in their previous two games. San Antonio has lost three straight games.
It was a win the Jazz needed, as they'll play the Lakers twice and face Orlando later in the week. |

Lakers dominate the fourth quarter to silence Jazz
By Bryan Chu, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday December 10, 2009 2:36AM
LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- A deflated and still dazed look showed on each member of the Utah Jazz's faces Wednesday.
"We were right there," Jazz forward Carlos Boozer said. "I thought we could have won the game."
"We panicked," Jazz guard CJ Miles said.
After playing the defending champs about as tough as any team for three quarters, the Jazz seemingly wilted in the final quarter as the Lakers applied a stifling defense to blowout the Jazz, 101-77, at Staples Center.
"We put an incredible quarter together," said forward Pau Gasol, whose Lakers went on a 20-0 run and outscored the Jazz 28-6 in the fourth period.
With the victory, the Lakers (17-3) have now won 10 straight. None were likely more impressive than the one earned by their play in the final 12 minutes against the Jazz.
In the fourth quarter, Utah (12-9) missed 15 of its 17 shots, and the Lakers forced the Jazz into three shot clock violations for a total of six turnovers in the final period alone.
"They came out and just destroyed us," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.
Kobe Bryant led all players with 27 points on 10-for-19 shooting. He also had eight assists and two steals. Gasol recorded his fourth double-double, 19 points and 12 rebounds.
For the Jazz, Deron Williams had 17 points and eight assists. Boozer, who had his streak of eight consecutive games scoring 21 points snapped, had 11 points on 5-for-16 shooting.
The Jazz led for most of the game. Entering the fourth quarter they were down by two, 73-71. That's because they didn't back down for the first three quarters, playing tight defense themselves.
Utah went on a mini 7-1 blitz midway through the third quarter and took its biggest lead of the game, 63-55, with 6:32 left in the third. Lakers coach Phil Jackson then called a timeout, one that proved to be a momentum changer.
Coming out of the timeout, there seemed to be a sense of urgency for Los Angeles.
A rejuvenated Lakers team answered with a 12-2 run, capped by a Lamar Odom layup to lead 67-65. Bryant had his imprint all over the third quarter too, bulldozing his way to 13 points and three assists, one of which led to a Jordan Farmar 3-pointer at the end of the period.
"(Bryant's) aggressiveness was contagious to the rest of the guys," Gasol said.
The Lakers' momentum carried over into the final quarter.
As for the Jazz, cold shooting plagued them as they missed their first 12 shots. The Lakers swarming defense had a hand in the Jazz struggles, none more indicative than Farmar's block on a Williams' jumper, which led to a shot clock violation.
Williams stopped the Lakers 20-0 run with an 18-foot jumper from the right wing with 4:36 left in the game. At that point, Utah was down 94-75. Williams' basket was Utah's first field goal of the period and ended more than six minutes of scoring silence.
All of the ball movement that helped the Jazz build their lead in the first three quarters vanished in the fourth.
"Sometimes, because of the guys we have like Deron and Boozer," said Miles, who had 14 points, "we lean on them and end up watching them."
Added Sloan, whose team will see the Lakers again on Saturday in Salt Lake City: "You can't go out and play street ball against this team. They will annihilate you and I think some of that happened with us." |

爵士队长 Harpring, 联盟其中一位最佳工兵型全能球员。。。 是否职业生涯已到终点? Harpring: Season, maybe career over
Comment Email Print Share
Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Jazz forward Matt Harpring says his comeback attempt to play this season is over and his career may be as well.
Harpring
The 11-year veteran has never completely recovered from an infection that developed after ankle surgery in the summer of 2008. The Jazz issued a release Thursday from Harpring, who at 33 years old with a long history of injuries did not say he was retiring but also did not leave room for another comeback attempt.
"After consultations with the doctors and based on their recommendations, I have reluctantly come to the realization that my body can simply no longer withstand the rigors of NBA games and practices," Harpring said.
Although Harpring is still under contract this season for $6.5 million, the Jazz will be eligible to recoup much of that from insurance.
Harpring has played for the Jazz since signing as a free agent in the summer of 2002, finally finding an NBA home after playing for three teams in his first four seasons.
Harpring's playing time had been dropping over the last few years as the injuries, including multiple knee surgeries and the strep infection that developed after an operation to remove a bone spur in his right ankle after the 2008 playoffs.
Harpring played through the pain in 63 games last season, but was excused from training camp this year so he could continue to try to rehabilitate at home in Atlanta.
Even after his scoring decreased, Harpring was still one of the team's hardest workers and relentless defenders, making him a favorite of coach Jerry Sloan and general manager Kevin O'Connor.
"The competitiveness he brought every game, you always knew what you were going to get from him," O'Connor said Thursday. "You knew every night." |

Williams scores 32 points, Jazz beat Magic
By DOUG ALDEN
Posted Dec 11 2009 1:46AM
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) Deron Williams scored 21 of his 32 points in the second half and had 15 assists and eight rebounds, leading the Utah Jazz to a 120-111 victory over Orlando on Thursday night that snapped Magic's six-game winning streak.
Carlos Boozer had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and C.J. Miles added a season-high 22 points for the Jazz, coming off an embarrassing loss in Los Angeles the night before when they scored just six points in the fourth quarter against the Lakers.
The Jazz survived a dreadful first half from the foul line and took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Magic 38-21.
Vince Carter had 34 points to lead the Magic, who had won eight straight road games.
Mehmet Okur added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Utah despite getting into early foul trouble by blanketing Orlando's Dwight Howard.
Okur's defense flustered Howard, who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds - just an average night after opening the game with 10 points and seven rebounds in the first half.
Matt Barnes added 17 points and Ryan Anderson scored 16, making four 3-pointers while leading the Magic to an 18-point lead in the first half.
Utah helped Orlando pull ahead by making just 10 of 22 foul shots in the first half. Having little to fear by sending the Jazz to the line, the Magic racked up 13 fouls in the first half.
But the Jazz got within eight at halftime, then opened the third quarter on a 14-3 run and the Magic never recovered.
The Jazz came out with a bit of a mean streak after halftime, shutting down the freewheeling fun the Magic enjoyed in the first half with a physical game that was much more Utah's style. Williams had 11 points and eight assists in the period and ended it on a 3-pointer with one second left that gave the Jazz a 90-81 lead.
Howard had opened the third with two foul shots to put the Magic up 62-52, then Utah scored the next 10 points. Okur started it with a hook, Wesley Matthews broke for a layup off a pass from Williams, then Boozer and Brewer closed the game with back-to-back dunks that got the crowd in a frenzy. Williams assisted on both dunks and Brewer had a steal during the string of 10 straight points.
Okur made two foul shots to tie it at 62 with 8:35 left in the third. It was the first time in the game the Jazz went 2 for 2 from the line.
The Magic continued to struggle in the fourth and went without a field goal until Rashard Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 7:41 left in the game. That got Orlando to 97-89, but the Jazz scored with the next eight points.
Williams took a forearm to the back of the head from Howard during the run and gave the Jazz a scare when he stayed on the court for a few moments before getting helped up, then making both foul shots.
NOTES: It was the most points of the season for Miles, who missed the first 17 games with a torn ligament in his left thumb. ... The Jazz finished with 28 assists to Orlando's 18. ... Anderson hit his first four 3-point attempts for the Magic. ... Utah's Andrei Kirilenko missed the game because of a strained lower back. ... The Jazz made 9 of 10 free throws in the third quarter. |
