Maynor steps up in clutch to help Jazz turn back Raptors
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday November 19, 2009 1:03AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- It was a scenario that's played out in Utah's home arena for many years: a tight game in the fourth quarter, and the Jazz turn to the point guard to make the game's decisive plays.
It just wasn't that point guard.
Eric Maynor, a rookie out of Virginia Commonwealth, ran the team for much of the fourth quarter while Deron Williams moved over to the two-spot. The move paid off nicely for the Jazz, who blew open a tight game to defeat the Toronto Raptors 104-91 on Wednesday night.
"Two words: Eric Maynor," was how Jazz forward Carlos Boozer loudly greeted reporters for his postgame interview. "Eric's been playing great, man. He's stepped in, he's got swag, he's got confidence. When he comes in the game, he knows what he's supposed to do out there and does a great job of doing it."
The Jazz opened the fourth quarter leading by three and with a seldom-used lineup combination of Maynor, Williams, Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko and Paul Millsap. Maynor quickly took charge, as he made a free throw and assisted on a reverse layup by Kirilenko to put Utah up by four.
Maynor also hit a jump hook and scored on an uncontested layup -- thanks to an assist from Williams to put the Jazz up 89-79 with 6 minutes remaining. Maynor scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, including a stretch where he scored eight straight points. Those eight points gave the Jazz a 91-79 lead.
"He has been playing great," Williams said of Maynor. "That allows me to step out and play the two a little bit. He earned playing time, he showed the coaching staff he belongs on the court and played well in my absence and is still playing well."
Maynor and Williams rarely share time in the backcourt together. They did on Wednesday to try and spark the offense by having two point guards on the floor together and to give Williams more of a chance to come off of screens and get in scoring position.
"He made some terrific plays," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said of Maynor. "He got the ball where we wanted to go with it. D-Will is a very good shooter, so they're going to have to guard him at the two position. That's a huge asset for us."
The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Maynor even blocked his first NBA shot in Utah's victory.
"Day by day I get more confident and coach Sloan is gaining more confidence in me and my teammates get more confidence in me," Maynor said. "I'm cool with that."
Williams returned to the Jazz lineup after missing the last two games of Utah's four-game Eastern road trip. He left the team to be at home to deal with his daughter's undisclosed medical condition.
Boozer had a team-high 22 points and 18 rebounds for Utah, while Williams and Kirilenko each had 20 points.

Jazz put end to 20-game, 10-year winless streak at Spurs
By Tim Price, for NBA.com
Posted Friday November 20, 2009 12:17AM
SAN ANTONIO (NBA.com exclusive) -- When the Jazz had a one-two combination of John Stockton and Karl Malone, it was common for Utah to come into any building and win on the enemy's court. And for the Jazz to finally win on the Spurs' floor, something they hadn't done in 20 trips and more than 10 years, it had to look like Stockton and Malone were back out there again.
So when Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer pulled off one of those Stockton-Malone plays -- a give-and-go that set up Boozer's 3-point play and a four-point lead with just more than a minute to go -- the Jazz finally got over the top. A moment later, Utah was running off the court with a 90-83 win and the franchise's first victory in San Antonio since Feb. 28, 1999 in the Alamodome.
"It was nice from my standpoint to get a win in this building before I die," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said, not able to help the sly grin appearing on his face. He's coached all of those losses.
He could thank Williams and Boozer for pulling this one out, which -- coincidentally -- is the first time Utah (6-6) has won consecutive games this season. The Spurs (4-6) trimmed the Jazz's seven-point lead with 6 ?minutes left to one, 84-83, when Tim Duncan made two free throws.
But Williams and Boozer kept the pressure on. Boozer was 4-for-5 in the fourth quarter and scored 10 points in eight minutes on the floor. Williams had six assists and also five points in the fourth.
And now the Spurs are below .500 for the first time in the Duncan era. They were 5-5 a year ago.
"Down the stretch, we made all the plays we needed to," Williams said. "We did all the right things, and that's something we've struggled with in this building."
Williams finished with 21 points and 10 assists, while Boozer had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists -- his fourth straight double-double.
"I'm having a lot of fun out there," Boozer said. "We're on a roll, and we're just going to have to continue to grind. I'm loose. I didn't get a lot of calls, but I kept fighting."
Duncan's free throws at 1:25 were the Spurs' last points. Duncan had 21 for the night while carrying the scoring load in place of the injured Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.
Parker has missed four of the past five games with an ankle sprain. Ginobili missed portions of the past two games and finally sat the entire game. He's expected to miss at least a week with a strained groin.
The Jazz have their share of injuries and absences. Mehmet Okur stayed in his sick bed at home after missing Wednesday's game against Toronto with flu-like symptoms. Ronnie Price missed his fifth game because of left big toe sprain. And that doesn't even mention the continuing absences of Matt Harpring (ankle and knee), Kyle Korver (knee) and C.J. Miles (thumb). |

Boozer Kirilenko 各贡献 22分,协助爵士在主场以 100-97 击败 活塞队。4连胜
Boozer, Kirilenko help Jazz beat Pistons
Posted Nov 22 2009 12:49AMSALT LAKE CITY(AP) Andrei Kirilenko and the Utah Jazz outlasted the Detroit Pistons for their fourth straight victory.
Kirilenko scored six of his 22 points in overtime and the Jazz beat the Pistons 100-97 on Saturday night. Carlos Boozer scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half and overtime to help the Jazz escape a back-and-forth game that produced 17 lead changes and saw no lead larger than five points after halftime.
``It was a tough game for us,'' said Jazz guard Deron Williams, who finished with 11 assists. ``We had to win it on the defensive end and that's what we did.''
``I thought Andrei had a great game off the bench,'' Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. ``Boozer made all these free throws and made some key baskets to help us win the ball game.''
Boozer was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line and the Jazz capitalized on a large free-throw disparity. They shot 19 more and made 12 more than Detroit. Utah shot 75 percent from line and made its final eight, including all six in overtime.
``Defensively we did a nice job, especially at their house,'' Pistons coach John Kuester said, ``but they got to the foul line 44 times to our 25. So that hurt.''
Detroit's Ben Gordon scored 25 points, but missed a potential tying 3-pointer in the final second after two Kirilenko free throws put Utah ahead with 9.8 seconds remaining.
Detroit's Rodney Stuckey scored 18 points, and Charlie Villanueva had 17 points in the Pistons' fourth consecutive loss.
Detroit shot 45 percent from the field, but made just two of nine shots in overtime. The Pistons held a four-point lead after three quarters.
Paul Millsap missed a jumper at the buzzer in regulation after Gordon's two free throws tied it at 90 with 22.1 seconds left.
Utah dressed just nine players and was without starting center Mehmet Okur (flu). |

Thunder make statement in road win over Jazz
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Wednesday November 25, 2009 1:14AMSALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- There is still a long way to go in the marathon NBA season, but the young Oklahoma City Thunder may have had a coming-of-age performance on Tuesday night.
The Thunder thoroughly dominated the Utah Jazz on their home court with a 104-94 victory. Oklahoma City displayed outstanding ball movement, drained eight 3-pointers, and played what's becoming their trademark ? tenacious defense.
"We are playing great right now," said Thunder guard Thabo Sefolosha. "We've got a lot of confidence. Coming in a gym like that and being able to win that game is big for us."
It's big because the Thunder aren't supposed to win games like they did in Utah. They're the second-youngest team in the league and their oldest starter is 26-year-old Nenad Krstic. The Jazz's home arena is supposed to be one of the toughest places in the league to play, but Oklahoma City didn't care about following protocol and taking its lumps against a veteran team.
The Thunder instead just took it to the Jazz on defense for most of the night. They forced 24 turnovers, had numerous deflections and finished with 10 steals ? twice as many as the Jazz had.
"They came out tonight and really got after us right away," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "I thought they did a tremendous job defensively, making us take tough shots and got us out of our offense."
A brilliant adjustment made at halftime by Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks was one of the differences in the game. He put defensive-stopper Sefolosha on Deron Williams in the third quarter, and it took Utah's point guard out of his rhythm. Williams, after an effective first half, shot 1-for-5 and committed six turnovers in the second half.
"Deron Williams is a phenomenal player and Thabo is one of the best defensive players in the league," said Thunder forward Kevin Durant. "It was fun watching him play defense like that and helping our team out. He's grown as a player, and he always helps on the defensive end."
Sefolosha's defense was one factor in Oklahoma City blowing the game open in the third quarter. The Thunder, who led by one at halftime, outscored the Jazz by 15 points in the third period, limiting them to just four points in the final six minutes of the third.
"We didn't do a very good job trying to contend them," Sloan said. "You've got to knock them off the boards every time you can and help each other on the defensive end. We got confused on defense and when we have those kinds of problems it's tough to pull yourself out of a slump."

Hot shooting Jazz dump Bulls on Thanksgiving
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Friday November 27, 2009 2:22AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Late in the first quarter of the Utah Jazz's Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bulls, forward Andrei Kirilenko almost threw up an airball on a free-throw attempt.
The shot grazed the front of the rim, but center Mehmet Okur stepped in the paint, grabbed the rebound and put it in for two.
That sequence told the story of Utah's 105-86 win over Chicago on Thursday night. The Jazz were a step quicker and more aggressive than the Bulls, dominated in hustle plays and handed Chicago its fourth straight loss.
It was the polar opposite of how the Jazz played in their previous home game in a loss to the Thunder on Tuesday. This time it was Utah that moved the ball well on offense, got easy looks at the basket and forced the Bulls to get out of rhythm by playing sticky defense.
"We had a lot more energy, a lot more life," said Jazz point guard Deron Williams. "We competed harder, we competed better. We were a different team tonight."
Carlos Boozer, who was rumored to be traded to Chicago and other places during the offseason, helped the Jazz transform from what looked like a pushover team against Oklahoma City. Boozer had 28 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots. He made his first seven shots and finished shooting 12-for-14.
"I'm in a great groove, having a good time out there," Boozer said. "My teammates are trying to find me. I'm just trying to put the ball in the hole and get us a win."
It was obvious that the Jazz were bothered by how they played and looked in their loss to the Thunder and wanted to get back in the win column. They took a day off on Wednesday with many of them celebrating Thanksgiving a day early. On Thursday, they had a shootaround in the morning and the light schedule seemed to helped Utah refocus before its nationally televised holiday game.
"We were a lot more live and a lot more aggressive than we were the other night (against Oklahoma City)," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "It looked like a totally different team than we were the other night."
Utah put the game away before halftime by playing lights out on offense in the first half. The Jazz were efficient, shooting 66 percent and scoring 34 of their 57 first-half points in the paint. Utah made 25 baskets in the first half and 16 of them were assisted.

Behind Williams, Jazz set tempo early to beat Blazers
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday November 29, 2009 12:59AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz were well aware that the Portland Trail Blazers were playing the second night of back-to-back games Saturday and coming off a stunning 10-point loss to Memphis. So the Jazz simply wanted to start fast and make the Blazers run with them from the opening tip and kick their division rivals while they're down. Check, check and check. It took the Jazz barely three minutes to put the Blazers down by double digits, cruising to a 108-92 victory. It was Utah's first win over a Northwest Division opponent this season. "Watching them struggle [Friday] night [against Minnesota] we knew that we could come out and jump on them early," said Jazz guard Deron Williams. "We knew that they would be a little tired after playing back-to-back, so that's what we looked to do." On paper, it looked like the Jazz had a tough task in front of them. Portland was holding opponents to 42 percent shooting (second best in the NBA) and featured the league's second-best scoring defense. On the court, it was a mismatch as Utah carved up Portland's defense. The Jazz, who opened the game on a 13-2 run while fans were still settling into their seats, shot 61 percent. Utah simply didn't waste any time on offense. Rather than standing around dribbling, the Jazz quickly got into sets, executed well and got good shots. They had the Blazers' defense scrambling. "Tonight was one of those games that let you know how important the last game was," said Portland guard Brandon Roy, who scored a team-high 19 points. "I think we were a little fatigued tonight. Utah really just rushed it at us from the jump." Utah also shot 61 percent in a 105-86 win over the Bulls on Thanksgiving, marking the first time the Jazz have shot better than 60 percent in consecutive games since they did it against Minnesota and Denver in 1995. Credit the Jazz's unselfishness for their success against Portland. They were credited with 36 assists, nearly doubling the Blazers (19). Williams led the effort with 15 dimes while adding 24 points. "We really executed tonight," said Jazz center Mehmet Okur. "Whoever was open we got them the ball and found the open man. It was a fun game." Williams set the tone early, securing a double-double (13 points, 10 assists) by halftime. "D-Will got us started," said Jazz forward Carlos Boozer. "He came out and looked for everybody. He got everybody set up and we went from there." Boozer also played a big role, as the Blazers sagged off him early and let him shoot open jumpers. He made them pay, finishing 6-for-7 in the first half en route to 26 points. He also had 12 rebounds and seven assists. "If they give it to me [open jumper] I'm going to shoot it every time," Boozer said. The only blemish on Utah's victory was a couple injuries. Forward Paul Millsap left in the second quarter with a bruised left knee. Andrei Kirilenko suffered a lower back strain just seconds later. Neither returned. The Jazz, already without Kyle Korver, C.J. Miles and Ronnie Price, finished the game with eight players. Okur (12 points) and Eric Maynor (10 points) joined Williams and Boozer in double-digit scoring, and the team got a nice boost from center Kyrylo Fesenko, who had nine points and three rebounds. "I thought it was a great win for us," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "We kind of got shorthanded to try to finish the game, but I thought our guys hung in there pretty well and tried to finish it off. We had a good start and we had a good finish." |

Offense continues hot streak as Jazz romp past Grizz
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Tuesday December 1, 2009 12:52AMSALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- It may seem like the same old story, but it's one that's hardly getting tiresome for the Utah Jazz.
For the third straight game, the Jazz played phenomenally on offense, sharing the ball, executing their sets and making shots in an impressive 120-93 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. It was the most points the Jazz have scored and their largest margin of victory so far this season.
Forward Ronnie Brewer had a season-high 25 points and Carlos Boozer nearly recorded a triple-double with 24 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists. The Jazz shot 58 percent.
It was Utah's third consecutive win by double digits and those three victories have come by an average of 20.7 points.
"They're playing really well," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said of the Jazz. "They've destroyed a couple of teams here in their last games and we just got added to that."
The Jazz, as they did in previous victories over the Bulls and Trail Blazers during their three-game winning streak, jumped on the Grizzlies from the opening tip. They quickly got into their sets on offense, cut hard and passed up good looks at the basket for better ones. They shot 62 percent in the first half, made 23 shots and 16 of them were assisted.
In the first half of their last three games, the Jazz have scored an average of 59 points and shot 64 percent. Those are trends Utah would obviously like to continue.
"We're making extra passes," Brewer said. "We're defending, we're helping each other and we're playing good basketball."
Utah's blowout victory over Memphis was another trend the Jazz wouldn't mind continuing. Talk about a one-sides series: the Jazz have now defeated the Grizzlies 10 straight times and by an average of 16.3 points per game. |
