Bryant, Lakers close out Jazz with 107-96 win
By BERNIE WILSON, AP Sports Writer
Posted Apr 28 2009 1:40AM

LOS ANGELES(AP) Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers are moving on in the NBA playoffs - as if that was really in doubt. With Bryant making everything from 3-pointers to a fadeaway jumper while falling on his backside, the Lakers ran away from the Utah Jazz on Monday night, winning 107-96 to finish the opening-round series in five games. Bryant scored 31 points and Lamar Odom had 26 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers, who earned several days of rest before meeting the winner of the Portland-Houston series.

Jazz Select Maynor Then Add Suton

Posted by Johnathan Kendrick on June 25, 2009

I don’t want to say I am 100% positive that the Jazz are taking Eric Maynor, the 6′3” point guard from Virginia Commonwealth but I am confident enough (see previous blog) that I am starting to write this blog before the draft even starts so I can post it as soon as it happens. It’s just a good fit for the Jazz.
Here is why Maynor is a good pick for the Jazz:
He is a true point guard that has very high basketball intelligence. That is something the Jazz have needed the last few years. As long as Sloan is the coach – the Jazz are going to run the same system and Maynor is a kid that can come in, learn the system, and run it the way the coaching staff wants it to be ran. Last year at VCU Maynor averaged 22.4 points and 6.2 assists. Maynor shot 46% from the field and 81% from the line.
Maynor fills a hole in the roster. From what I have heard in the off season, Knight won’t be back and it’s going to take at least a three year 5-6 million dollar deal to bring back Price. I don’t anticipate either one will be back in Utah. Maynor has shown he is still getting better - but don’t make the mistake of thinking he is a project.  Maynor can be the back up this year at point guard and I expect he will be #2 on the depth chart with either William Jefferson or Kevin Kruger, both who played for the Flash last year, at the third string.
Eric Maynor is a leader. He lead Virginia Commonwealth to the NCAA tournament twice – advancing to the second round in the first year when maynor hit a last second shot to upset Duke.
As much as Maynor is a good fit for the Jazz there a few things he needs to work on. Maynor weighs 165 pounds. He needs to put on some muscle. He needs to work on his outside shot, last year he hit 36% of his three point attempts in college. Despite being skinny, Maynor is not that fast, the Jazz need to sign him as soon as possible and get him to the agility camp that Ronnie Brewer and Paul Millsap attend during the summer.

Anthony scores 30 as Nuggets beat Jazz, 114-105
By PAT GRAHAM, AP Sports Writer
Posted Oct 29 2009 1:40AM

DENVER(AP) Carmelo Anthony had a game-high 30 points and rookie Ty Lawson scored seven of his 17 points in a pivotal fourth-quarter run, lifting the Denver Nuggets to a season-opening 114-105 win over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. Chauncey Billups finished with 25 while Kenyon Martin added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Deron Williams led Utah with 28 points and 13 assists. Andrei Kirilenko and Ronnie Brewer each contributed 16 on a night when two-time All-Star Carlos Boozer struggled, finishing 3 of 14 and scoring 12 points - most coming late. He also had 11 rebounds. Lawson ignited a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter, scoring on driving layups and quick jumpers to help the Nuggets pull away in what had been a close contest.

Millsap provides much-needed spark in Jazz win over Clips
Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday October 31, 2009 1:35AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) --  The mere sight of reserve forward Paul Millsap checking into games always draws a huge and positive reaction from Utah Jazz fans.

And he kept the home crowd cheering throughout the stretch run in Utah's 111-98 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. Millsap led a short-handed Jazz team with 23 points and nine rebounds, and also contributed the things Utah fans love about him -- hustle plays, defense, deflections, two blocked shots and a steal.

"That's who he is," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "He's come miles and miles [as a player] and he deserves a lot of credit for what he's been able to do."

Millsap changed the game's momentum in the final seconds of the third quarter. With just 1.2 seconds left in the third, Millsap made a follow shot off a miss by guard Ronnie Brewer. As he laid the ball into the hoop, he was fouled hard by the Clippers' Rasual Butler and knocked to the ground. But he got up, sank the free throw to convert the 3-point play, and got the Jazz within 84-83 to close the third.

"aul came in and gave them a big lift in that second half," said Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy. "He really hurt us. He made shots and got offensive rebound points."

A Jazz defense that was matador-like for most of the night tightened up following Millsap's 3-point play. The Clippers didn't make a basket in the fourth quarter until Al Thornton scored on a transition layup with 6 minutes, 26 seconds left in the game. They went nearly seven total minutes without making a field goal.

"It was a letdown and then they just kicked our butts," Dunleavy said.

Millsap did much of the kicking, scoring 14 of his points and grabbing five of his rebounds in the final period. He showed off some versatility, making jumpers, driving to the basket, and of course, scoring on putbacks.

"He scores in bunches," said Jazz guard Deron Williams, who had 21 points and nine assists. "He did that at the right time tonight. I told him to go at [Clippers center Chris Kaman]. He has no business guarding him."

It was the first dividend returned on the investment the Jazz made in Millsap during the offseason. Millsap, who was a restricted free agent, signed a four-year, $32 million contract with Portland but stayed with Utah when the Jazz matched the deal. Millsap struggled in Utah's opener against Denver on Wednesday, scoring just 10 points.

The Clippers, after shooting 49 percent from the field in the first three quarters, made just three field goals in the fourth quarter, shooting a miserable 27 percent.

Up-tempo Rockets roll blast past Jazz
Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com

SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) --  They wore their red road uniforms and brought recognizable players such as Shane Battier, Luis Scola and Aaron Brooks back to EnergySolutions Arena.
But the Houston Rockets might have made Utah wonder if it was a case of mistaken identity when they ran their way to a 113-96 victory over the Jazz on Monday night.
The Houston team that used to grind out games and base its offense around throwing it inside to Yao Ming was nowhere to be found. In its place was a team that run-and-gunned its way to a fairly easy victory over the Jazz.
The Rockets, who will be without Yao for the entire season, don't have the size to play the way they did when their 7-footer was healthy. So they have adapted, and the results have been positive. Houston has won three straight games.
"We have to play fast," said Houston forward Shane Battier. "That's the best way to combat physical play. If we would have tried to bang with those guys, they're too big. They're bigger than us."
Size was seemingly the only advantage Utah had on Houston on Monday. The Rockets dictated the game's tempo, pushing the ball at every opportunity until the game's outcome was determined in the fourth quarter. Houston caught Utah sleeping a couple of times after made baskets, and got some easy points off of layups.
"We really pushed the ball the whole game and kept coming at them," said Rockets coach Rick Adelman. "We got some stops in the second half. It was a terrific win."
Houston pulled away in the fourth quarter with a lineup consisting of Battier, Scola, Kyle Lowry and rookies Chase Budinger and David Andersen. Budinger banked in a 15-footer to give the Rockets the lead for good at 82-80 and then splashed in a 3-pointer with an assist from Lowry. A 22-4 run in less than six minutes gave the Rockets a comfortable 102-84 lead.
"That group that came in the fourth quarter just really made a huge difference with Kyle and Chase and Shane," Adelman said. "It was terrific. It was fun to watch."
It wasn't quite as enjoyable for the home fans, who started emptying the building with about five minutes remaining. The Rockets came into the game averaging 102 points and they hit that total when Lowry made a 3-pointer with five minutes left in the game.
"I think they did a terrific job," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "They put all kinds of pressure on us the way they pushed the ball up the floor and did a great job of getting on the boards."

Mavs ride Nowitzki's record quarter to improbable win
Dave Ivey, for NBA.com
Posted Wednesday November 4, 2009 12:32AM

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) --  Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said before Tuesday night's game against Utah that he didn't believe poor shooting was contagious.
He may have been considering vaccinations after a sickly shooting performance by his Mavericks through the first three quarters, but Dirk Nowitzki delivered the cure with a team-record 29 fourth-quarter points as Dallas rallied from 16 down for an improbable 96-85 victory.
Nowitzki didn't just get hot, but downright feverish in the fourth, making 7-for-8 shots from the field and 14 of 14 free throws to finish with 40 points and 11 rebounds as the Mavericks overcame a 72-56 deficit over the final nine-plus minutes. He smashed the previous Dallas record for points in a quarter set by Mark Aguirre with 24 in the first quarter against Denver on March 24, 1984.
"My mentality in the fourth was to go out there and make things happen," Nowitzki said. "We just needed a little spark and they kept feeding me the ball. I got every play down the stretch and I was able to deliver."
Utah, which has dropped five straight and 12 of its last 13 in Dallas, had a 67-52 lead after three quarters. The Mavs, who entered the game ranked 28th in field-goal percentage at 40.9 percent, shot just 31.9 percent through the first three quarters and looked more erratic than Charles Barkley at the driving range.
Fueled by Nowitzki, the Mavericks got off the mat and shot 70.6 percent (12-for-17) from the field and drained 18 of 18 free throws during the decisive final stanza. Dallas scored a season-high 44 points in the quarter, outscoring the Jazz 36-9 to finish the game.

Jazz rebound with 'monumental' win over Spurs
Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Friday November 6, 2009 2:43AM

SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) --  It was just what the Utah Jazz needed.
Following a Rocket meltdown and a disaster in Dallas earlier this week, the Jazz rebounded with a strong wire-to-wire effort in a 113-99 win over longtime nemesis San Antonio on Thursday night.
Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams each scored 27 points to lead the Jazz, who shot 53 percent against what's traditionally one of the best defensive teams in the NBA.
Boozer called it a "monumental" win, and although it was only the fifth game of the season, it was much needed.
"We felt like we lost some games we should have won, especially the last two fourth quarters," Boozer said. "We came out tonight and proved that we can beat a team when we have a lead, and hold a lead, and even extend it a little bit. We got to take confidence from this game, especially with how we played on the defensive end."
Utah's previous two losses had Jazz fans feeling nothing but doom and gloom about the 2009-10 season. In their last two defeats, the Rockets outscored Utah by 20 in the second half on Monday, and the Jazz blew a 16-point fourth-quarter lead against the Mavericks on Tuesday. The Jazz lost three of their first four -- their worst start in seven seasons.
"We let a game get away the other night and it looked like the end of the season for a lot of people the way they were talking about it," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "I thought our guys would come back and play and I was proud of them for the way they played."
The Jazz got their season back on track, you could say, by playing Spurs basketball. They got deflections and stops on defense, helped each other out defensively, and prevented San Antonio from getting many close-range looks. The Spurs shot just 43 percent, while both Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili finished below 50 percent from the field.
"The biggest thing is we were aggressive on defense," Boozer said. "When we play defense like that where we're helping each other, making the other team take jump shots ... it helped us a lot tonight."
The Jazz were just as dominant on the other end of the floor. The Spurs, who are working seven new players into their system, looked to be slow to react defensively to what Utah was running on offense. San Antonio uncharacteristically couldn't keep Utah away from the basket, as the Jazz scored 64 points in the paint. Utah simply attacked the hoop at every opportunity.
The Jazz scored 113 points against the usually defensive-minded Spurs while making just one 3-pointer.
