Fernando Torres may have gone to Liverpool but Atletico Madrid are still scoring goals for fun and moved back into the Spanish League top four with a convincing 3-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.
Atletico had not won at Depor's Riazor Stadium since 1995 but they ended that jinx in style and nudged Villarreal, who lost 3-0 to Espanyol on Saturday, down to fifth.
Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan, Argentine Kun Aguero and Jose Jurado were all on target for a rampant Atletico.
Teenager Aguero and Forlan have bagged 15 goals between them this season - Aguero has eight to Forlan's seven - and the striking duo have become a major factor behind Atletico's resurgence.
For La Coruna it was another setback and they stay second from bottom.
Valencia finished fourth in the last campaign but they are seven points adrift of the final Champions League spot after a 0-0 draw against Levante on Sunday.
Bottom side Levante had only collected eight points prior to the match but Valencia could not give their frustrated home fans - who have suffered five home defeats this season - something to cheer and they jeered the team off at the final whistle.
Valencia have collected just three points from the last 18 and have not won since mid-November.
Later leaders Real Madrid have the chance to restore their seven-point cushion at the top when they host Real Zaragoza at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real have not dropped a single point at home this season and need to continue this record to move seven clear of Barca who defeated Real Mallorca 2-0 on Saturday.
Real's sensational 1-0 win at Barcelona on December 23 has put them firmly in the box-seat but their German coach Bernd Schuster, enjoying an incredible debut season, has warned his team not to get complacent.
In Sunday's other late match Sevilla and Real Betis lock horns in the fiery Seville derby with both teams needing the points for different reasons.
Sevilla, who face Barcelona in the Kings Cup on Wednesday, are desperately trying to make up ground and qualify for the Champions League after an indifferent start to the season, while third from bottom Betis just want to fight off relegation.
