EO: AirAsia’s expansion on track
By Hamisah Hamid
LOW-COST carrier AirAsia Bhd is expanding steadily outside Southeast Asia with its first destination in India this year and more destinations being planned in China.
Group chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Tony Fernandes said the carrier is progressing according to its plan to establish Malaysia as a hub.
“China is doing very well for us.We are ready to take on India.
“We are looking at south India. Azran (Osman Rani, CEO of Air- Asia X) is planning for Amritsar,” he told reporters after the signing of agreement between AirAsia and Tafe College Seremban in Seri Kembangan yesterday.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu and AirAsia chairman Datuk Pahamin A. Rajab witnessed the signing that sealed the cooperation between the college and AirAsia Academy in engineering training.
Tafe College CEO Datuk G. Vadiveloo and Fernandes were the signatories.
Fernandes said AirAsia will take delivery of 16 aircraft this year on a staggered basis.
On whether AirAsia is on schedule to Europe, he said the company is waiting for long-range aircraft like A340s.
“We will wait for the long-range aircraft … We are still optimistic that we’ll find the right aircraft,” he said.
Asked to comment on Malaysia Airlines (MAS) transformation plan announced yesterday, Fernandes said MAS should not give up the premium routes as this would open up opportunities to its rival, Singapore Airlines (SIA).
He said MAS has cut a lot of routes in Europe, and as soon as MAS dropped certain routes, SIA will increase its flights on those routes.
“We think it’s sad, MAS is better than SIA.
“MAS’ crew are first-class, they have strong domestic market, there’s good regional feed and they should go upmarket,” he said.
Fernandes also said that AirAsia is not threatened by MAS lowering its airfare.
“I think that’s fine, you rival us in terms of air ticket prices, but don’t stop us (from growing),” he said, adding that MAS should welcome the opening of skies for AirAsia.
In its Business Turnaround Plan announced in February 2006, MAS had dropped unprofitable routes and reduced frequencies on selected routes.
The airline said the cost-savings are expected to substantially offset revenue losses by the rationalisation of these routes.
Managing director Datuk Seri Idris Jala had said that survey findings show that MAS fares had been too low for a long time, resulting in many routes between Malaysia and international destinations being unprofitable.
