Wade leads Heat over Jazz
By DOUG ALDEN, AP Sports Writer
Posted Dec 3 2008 11:55PM
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) Maybe a winning record will help Dwyane Wade get over his migraine. Wade overcame his headache and foul trouble while leading Miami to a 93-89 victory over the short-handed Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, getting the Heat back above .500 as they ended a five-game Western Conference road trip. "I was going to play. Anything I can do to help my guys and try to get a win,'' said Wade, who had 23 points and five assists. The Heat won three of five on the trip and improved to 10-9 - just five games short of last season's total of 15 wins. The Jazz were missing a large chunk of their regular lineup and the Heat took advantage inside, outrebounding Utah 45-38 as injured forwards Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko and Matt Harpring watched from Utah's bench in suits. Udonis Haslem had 13 rebounds and Joel Anthony had four blocks for the Heat, who held off several runs by the Jazz and went 9-of-11 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to seal it. "They kept on coming, they wouldn't go away,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I thought their resiliency was good. It definitely helped us that they had some of their main guys out.'' Paul Millsap led Utah with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Deron Williams, playing in his fifth straight game after missing most of the first month of the season with a sprained ankle, had 13 points and five assists. The Jazz fell behind by 16 early in the fourth quarter and didn't have enough to rally against the Heat after a comeback Tuesday night in a win at Sacramento. Utah was 29-for-73 and just 4-for-15 on 3-pointers. "We just don't have a whole lot of rhythm right now,'' Utah's Kyle Korver said. |

Jazz victorious in McHale's debut for Wolves
By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports Writer
Posted Dec 9 2008 11:10PM
MINNEAPOLIS(AP) Rookie Kevin Love was dressing somberly in the Timberwolves locker room, his back to a group of reporters getting ready to ask him about four crucial misses from the free throw line down the stretch against Utah on Tuesday night. Then new coach Kevin McHale came up and gave him a hearty pat on the back and a nurturing squeeze of the neck, letting the 20-year-old know that all was not lost. Just one game. "I told him we're going to be in a lot of battles and I'll go to battle with him any day of the week,'' McHale said after the Wolves lost 99-96 to the Jazz in his debut as coach. And that appears to be the difference between the team's new coach and the fired Randy Wittman. The young Timberwolves staggered to a 4-15 start under the hard-nosed Wittman, including a lifeless 23-point loss to the dysfunctional Clippers on Saturday night. On Monday, owner Glen Taylor fired Wittman, stripped McHale of his vice president of basketball operations title and installed the Hall of Famer as coach of the down-and-out team he assembled. For one game, at least, McHale seemed to inject some energy and heart into a team that has lacked both since a six-game losing streak started nine days ago. "When I turned the ball over, I'm so used to coming out of the game,'' guard Rashad McCants said. "Then I looked over and saw him clapping and saying, 'Come on, get the next one.' It gives you confidence.'' Next on McHale's agenda should be teaching them how to shoot free throws. Mehmet Okur hit the go-ahead shot with 1.7 seconds to play and the Jazz capitalized on 16 missed free throws by Minnesota to rally for the victory. Al Jefferson led Minnesota with 21 points. The Timberwolves led by seven with 2:45 to play, but Love's misses in the final three minutes allowed the Jazz to hang around. Kyle Korver buried a 3-pointer from the elbow to give Utah a 95-94 lead with 54 seconds to go. After two free throws from Randy Foye gave the Wolves the lead again with 7.8 seconds left, Okur swished a fallaway jumper from 11 feet to put the Jazz on top for good. Ronnie Brewer scored 25 points for the Jazz on the 20th anniversary of Jerry Sloan's promotion to the team's head coach. After the back-and-forth game, Sloan was asked if he has another 20 years left in him. "Twenty more years?'' Sloan quipped. "I don't know about 20 more minutes.'' By contrast, the Timberwolves have changed coaches four times in the last four years. Their latest move was the 223rd coaching change in the NBA since Sloan became coach of the Jazz on Dec. 9, 1988. In that time, Sloan has enjoyed an unprecedented level of job security in a league where seven of the nine winners of the coach of the year award this century have been either fired or pushed out the door. Sloan celebrated the achievement the way he celebrates most of his accomplishments, with a humble shrug and a dismissive wave. "Anybody could be in this position,'' he said. "I've had good players.'' McHale has actually been the coach of the Timberwolves twice now during Sloan's tenure in Utah. He took over for the fired Flip Saunders in 2005 and led the Wolves to a 19-12 finish. He spent most of his time encouraging and prodding a young team that he said looked "beaten down'' with a "black cloud hanging over it'' after losing by a combined 52 points in the previous two games. Love finished with eight points and 15 rebounds, but went 2-for-9 from the free throw line. "I was proud of the guys,'' McHale said. "It's been a tumultuos couple of days as you can imagine.'' Okur finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Paul Millsap had 15 points and 10 boards. "We're trying to win as many games as we possibly can, especially on the road,'' Brewer said. "We struggled. Even though this was a big night for Jerry, it was a big night for the team. You've got to win.'' |

Okur leads Utah past Portland
By DOUG ALDEN, AP Sports Writer
Posted Dec 12 2008 1:25AM
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) It didn't matter much where Mehmet Okur was lining up for his shots in the first half. From 3-point range or under the basket, everything was falling for Okur in Utah's 97-88 victory over Portland on Thursday night. Okur scored 21 of his 27 points in the first half and pulled down 10 rebounds. He was 9-for-14 from the floor and made two of the Jazz's three 3-pointers. "I felt good, especially in the first half. I was able to mix up my game,'' Okur said. "In the second half I didn't want to shoot any tough shots over the hand or anything like that, so second half everybody got involved and it was a big game for us.'' Okur also played well defensively as the Jazz outscored the Trail Blazers in the paint 44-32 despite playing their 12th straight game without leading scorer and rebounder Carlos Boozer (thigh). Paul Millsap had his 10th straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Deron Williams added 14 points and 11 assists to help the Jazz improve to 2-0 against Portland this season. "We tried very hard to try to help each other defensively. We ended up with a lot of easy baskets,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We're much smaller than they are and they're so much stronger, it looked like to start with they were gonna score inside all night and get every offensive rebound. Finally we started blocking out and getting some of the other people involved in rebounding the basketball for us.'' Brandon Roy had 33 points, and LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 for Portland, tied with Utah for second place in the Northwest Division. Rudy Fernandez was the only other Blazer to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points. The Trail Blazers outrebounded the Jazz 43-38, but Utah had a huge advantage from the foul line. The Jazz were 24-for-30, while Portland was 14-for-19. The Jazz also had 23 assists to Portland's 13. Roy and Aldridge weren't enough to lead Portland to a comeback, although they did make it close. "They did a great job and we've got to give them all the credit, but now it's our turn when we face them again to protect our home court,'' said Roy, who was 12-for-22 from the floor. "They did a great job of taking away my outlets and forcing me to be little bit more of a scorer. |

Jazz 97-88 Portland

Brewer

Without Howard, Magic beat Jazz in Utah
Posted Dec 13 2008 11:55PM
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) Could Dwight Howard be going from Superman to super sub? The All-Star center missed the first game of his career Saturday night, and coach Stan Van Gundy joked he might not get his starting spot back after the Orlando Magic used a dominating third quarter to beat the Utah Jazz 103-94. "We don't know if we're going to go back to Dwight as our starter or not,'' Van Gundy said with a smile, a verbal tip-of-the-cap to Howard's replacement, Marcin Gortat. Howard injured his left knee in Friday's loss at Phoenix and is listed as day-to-day. The winner of last season's All-Star slam dunk contest, when he donned a Superman cape for one dunk, had played in 351 consecutive games since he was the No. 1 overall pick in 2004. Rashard Lewis scored 27 points and Hedo Turkoglu added 22 for Orlando (18-6), which improved to 9-3 on the road this season. Gortat scored just four points and committed five fouls, but Van Gundy was quick to point out his four blocked shots and three offensive rebounds. The Magic outscored Utah 34-12 in the third quarter, after trailing by 10 at halftime. "We outplayed them like crazy in the second half,'' said Magic guard Jameer Nelson, who scored 10 of his 17 points in the period. Orlando opened the third with a 16-1 run and the spurt stretched to 26-5 on Nelson's 3-pointer with 3:31 remaining. "That third quarter was tremendous,'' Van Gundy said. "I'm proud of our team and this was one of the best wins I've ever been a part of.'' Andrei Kirilenko and Deron Williams each scored 17 points for Utah (15-10), which committed 22 turnovers, its second-highest total of the season. "We're up 10 and then they close it up in about two minutes,'' Williams said. "They came out, wanted it more and they had more energy and more life. They're tough with Howard in there, but they're also tough without him.'' The Jazz fell to 10-4 at EnergySolutions Arena, matching their total of home losses from last season, when they went 37-4. Utah shot just 3-of-15 from the field in the pivotal third quarter and finished 33-of-76 (43 percent) for the game. "We took some bad shots and they made some shots,'' Jazz forward C.J. Miles said. "They went on a run and we couldn't get back at them.'' |

Celtics beat Jazz 100-91 for 15th straight win
Posted Dec 15 2008 10:10PM
BOSTON(AP) Even swimming superstar Michael Phelps had to marvel at the Boston Celtics and their NBA-record 17 championships. But the 14-time Olympic gold medalist has the defending basketball champs beat on one count. "Mine have been in 12 years,'' Phelps told The Associated Press on Monday night after watching the Celtics beat the Utah Jazz 100-91, causing quite a stir from courtside and again in the Boston locker room after the game. It was the 15th straight victory for the Celtics, who are 23-2 this season and trying to up their total by the time Phelps has a chance to add to his in London in 2012. "Who knows?'' said Phelps, who followed a non-medal finish in Sydney in 2000 with six golds and two bronzes in Athens and eight more gold medals in Beijing in August. Rajon Rondo scored 12 of his career-high 25 points in the final 5:20, and Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Kendrick Perkins added 15 points and 14 rebounds to help Boston avenge the worst loss of its championship season. Paul Pierce scored 15 points before he hurt his left knee during a scramble for a defensive rebound with 31 seconds left. "It should be all right,'' Pierce said. "I put a little weight on it. It didn't go back that far, so it should be all right.'' But he seemed fine after the game, when he and several teammates posed for pictures with Phelps. "He's a great Olympian. We always respect great athletes,'' Pierce said. "We can say down the line to our kids that he was one of the best while we were playing.'' For Boston, the victory was payback of sorts for a 110-92 loss to the Jazz last March - the Celtics' worst loss of last season, when they cruised to a 66-16 record and their 17th NBA title. Pierce was the Most Valuable Player of the finals, and fans chanted "M-V-P!'' when he was helped off the court at the end of the game. Celtics coach Doc Rivers said the trainer thought Pierce would be fine. "But I'm sure they're going to do the regular tests,'' Rivers said. Paul Millsap scored a career-high 32 points with 10 rebounds for Utah. "I think he played his heart out. That's what happens when you play hard,'' coach Jerry Sloan said. "It's a sad commentary when someone is remembered for playing hard.'' Rondo also had nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals. The Jazz were within 89-85 after Deron Williams' 3-pointer with 3:23 left. But Rondo drove for a one-handed bank shot and then, after Williams sank a basket, Rondo made a free throw and Perkins hit a turnaround hook shot in the lane. Williams, who scored 15, hit another basket, but Perkins sank one of two free throws and Rondo made a spinning reverse bank shot from under the basket to make it 97-89 with 43 seconds left. "He put more English on it than Minnesota Fats does sometimes,'' Rivers said. "They decided they weren't going to guard him because Williams was running around trapping. The best thing is when he gave up the ball, he kept moving. They couldn't find him.'' The game seesawed through the first three quarters, with Boston opening a 12-point lead in the first, giving it back in the second and then going up 60-51 midway through the third. Notes: A TD Banknorth Garden security guard collapsed in a hallway after the game and was treated by the Celtics medical staff. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said the team had no further information about his condition or treatment. ... Phelps attended the game along with Jared from the Subway commercials. ... Celtics G Eddie House was not with the team so he could attend the funeral of his aunt. Coach Doc Rivers said he did not know when House would return. ... Jazz F Carlos Boozer missed the game with a strained left quadriceps. ... Perkins had a double-double at halftime with 12 points and 10 rebounds. ... The best start in NBA history with two losses is 26-2, set by the 1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers and matched by the '69-70 Knicks. |

Jazz rally by Nets after 7-point 1st quarter
By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer
Posted Dec 17 2008 10:10PM
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.(AP) Deron Williams wouldn't lobby to go back in the game in the second quarter. Not with the way the Utah Jazz had played while he was out there. Once their point guard returned, the Jazz finished off the Nets after a horrendous start. Williams had 17 points and 11 assists, and Utah overcame a seven-point first quarter and a 22-point deficit to beat New Jersey 103-92 on Wednesday night. The U.S. Olympian had only one point during 10 minutes on the floor in the first period, then watched the second while the Jazz began chipping away without him. "He was struggling in his game, because if you don't execute, the point guard doesn't get anything done,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "And other guys just were looking to take shots. They weren't looking to win the game. They were looking to take shots.'' Mehmet Okur had 23 points and nine rebounds for the Jazz, who snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 1-1 on a five-game trip. They played without starting forward Carlos Boozer for the 15th straight game because of a strained left quadriceps, then lost Sloan after he picked up two technical fouls 33 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter. Paul Millsap added 18 points and 12 rebounds in his 13th straight double-double for the Jazz, who made only three field goals during one of the worst quarters in franchise history. Williams wasn't surprised that he didn't get the call the rest of the first half. "When Brevin (Knight) comes in and Ronnie Price comes in and do the job they did and give us a big spark like that, and I played as poorly as I did, they deserve to play,'' said Williams, still working his way back into shape following a preseason sprained ankle. "Luckily I got it going in the second half so I didn't have to sit more.'' Vince Carter scored 32 points for the Nets, who opened a four-game homestand that continues Friday against Dallas, when Jason Kidd returns to the Meadowlands for the first time since getting traded last February. Devin Harris, the key player New Jersey got in return, had 21 points and 11 assists. New Jersey hadn't blown such a large lead in a loss since it led by 23 against Vancouver on Jan. 29, 2001, and fell 97-86. The Nets wasted their terrific start by giving up 72 points and 64 percent shooting in the second half. They were outrebounded 53-36. "When it comes down to execution from a team like Utah, we let them hang around like that, I mean they are one of the best executing teams in the NBA,'' Harris said. "They did what they did in the fourth quarter and we were unable to fight back.'' The Jazz never led until midway through the fourth quarter. They fell behind again by three, then surged into the lead with an 11-0 spurt. Kyle Korver followed Millsap's bucket with five straight points, starting with a jumper that gave them the lead for good at 81-80 with 5:18 to go. Okur sank two free throws before Millsap scored again for an 88-80 advantage with 3:33 to play. The Nets were scoreless for more than 3 minutes before Carter's jumper ended their drought. |

Williams, Okur lead Jazz to win over Detroit
Posted Dec 19 2008 11:25PM
AUBURN HILLS, Mich.(AP) Deron Williams scored 29 points and the Utah Jazz beat the Detroit Pistons 120-114 in double overtime Friday night. The win was Utah's seventh straight over the Pistons and Mehmet Okur, who finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, is 8-1 against them since leaving Detroit after winning the 2004 NBA title. Paul Millsap added 24 points and 12 rebounds for Utah. Allen Iverson led the Pistons with 38 points, and Richard Hamilton added 30. Rasheed Wallace's 3-pointer pulled Detroit within 96-94 with 1:20 to play, and Rodney Stuckey picked off the inbounds pass and laid it in to tie the game moments later. Okur and Wallace both missed, giving the Jazz a chance at what they thought would be the final shot of regulation. Williams drove on Stuckey, then stopped and pivoted to hit a short jumper with 2.2 seconds left. Hamilton, though, took the ensuing inbounds pass and hit a baseline jumper to send the game to overtime. The game was tied at 104 when Tayshaun Prince's running hook beat the shot clock with 36 seconds left in the extra session. Williams retied the game and Stuckey missed a potential winning 3-pointer to send the game to a second overtime. Wallace had fouled out late in the first overtime, and both Hamilton and Stuckey did the same in the first 90 seconds of the second. That forced Detroit to use a makeshift lineup that included Walter Herrmann, who hadn't played in the first five periods. The Pistons still were within 113-112 with a minute to play when Kyle Korver hit a 3-pointer to make it a four-point game. Iverson answered with a layup, but Andrei Kirilenko hit two free throws and Herrmann's 3-pointer rimmed out. Iverson wound up playing 54 minutes, tying LaMarcus Aldridge for the most in an NBA game this season. |

Gordon, Rose lead Bulls past Jazz
Posted Dec 20 2008 11:10PM
CHICAGO(AP) Derrick Rose certainly got Deron Williams' attention. Rose had 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, and Ben Gordon scored 26 points in the Chicago Bulls' 106-98 victory over Williams and the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. "He's (Rose) been doing it all season,'' Williams said. "He's a great player. He's not playing like a rookie. I don't think he's a rookie anymore. He's one of the best point guards in the league and he definitely took it over.'' With Chicago down 89-85 midway through the fourth quarter, Thabo Sefolosha hit a 3-pointer to start a Chicago 13-3 run. Rose made two free throws to give the Bulls a 93-92 lead with 4:51 left. Then on the next possession, Rose blew by Williams and CJ Miles for a layup. Gordon extended Chicago's lead with a 3 in transition to make it 98-92 with 4:05 left. Rose put the game away when he went by Williams again for a layup to make it 105-98 with 39.4 left. |

MILWAUKEE(AP) The Milwaukee Bucks shot 1-of-16 from 3-point range and 39 percent from the field. That probably would have meant a blowout loss not long ago. Not anymore. Michael Redd scored 27 points Tuesday night to lead the surging Bucks to their third win in a row and fifth in six games, 94-86 over the Utah Jazz. "It's huge for us,'' said Luke Ridnour, who had 11 points, 11 assists and six steals. "A couple of weeks ago, we might not have won this game, shooting the way we did. We wouldn't have gotten the stops we needed. Sometimes your offense can affect your defense, but tonight we were able to push through it. "Nobody hung their heads, and we just kept fighting.'' The three-game winning streak is Milwaukee's longest this season, and the Bucks snapped an eight-game losing streak against Utah. The Jazz finished 2-3 on their five-game road trip. Reserve Andrei Kirilenko scored a season-high 22 for Utah. Deron Williams added 17 points, eight assists and eight rebounds, but had seven of Utah's 24 turnovers. "We've been turning the ball over a number times in the last few games and having a terrible time handling the basketball,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "That doesn't give you much of a chance to win. "I didn't think we really busted a gut to play the game. I thought we played kind of soft and looked like we were feeling sorry for ourself a little bit. That looks like street ball to me, the way we played. Come out and guys trying to get shots off from 25 feet, and there's no chance to rebound it. Paul Millsap can't get all of them.'' The Jazz were playing without center Mehmet Okur, who sat out with back spasms, and forward Carlos Boozer, who missed his 18th straight with a strained left quad tendon. Utah also received a scare in the first quarter, when Millsap injured his left knee after he landed awkwardly trying to block Redd's layup. He stayed on the ground for several minutes before being helped to the locker room, putting no pressure on his left leg. X-rays were negative, and Millsap returned to the bench late in the second quarter with his left knee in a brace. He started the second half and finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, snapping his streak of 15 straight double-doubles, which was the longest active stretch in the NBA. Utah shot 38 percent (30-for-79), including 3-for-14 from behind |
