Idol Chartwatch, February 9: Katharine McPhee Hits the Charts
by Donna Reynolds -- 02/09/2006
Katharine McPhee’s new CD is a dramatic departure from the ballads for which she was known on American Idol. There was some concern that her fans would not embrace the new direction she has taken. How did Katharine McPhee do on this week’s chart? Read on to find out.
When snippets of songs from Katharine McPhee’s CD began circulating on the Internet, it quickly became apparent that “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” Kat had been replaced by a fresher, sexier, and decidedly more pop version. There was also a lot of chatter about her album cover, which shows her in thigh-high dominatrix leather boots and an oversized black and yellow horizontally striped sweater pulled down to just “barely there.”
But, of course, it’s about the music, and in the end, it seems that “pop-Kat” is a hit. Katharine McPhee came in at second place this week on the Billboard 200, selling 116,000 copies in its first week, second only to Norah Jones’ Not Too Late, which sold nearly 405,000 copies. Kat’s album was 5 on the Internet Album sales chart and #2 on the Digital list.
So how did Katharine do in terms of first week’s sales in comparison to other Idol runners-up? She’s right in the middle. Justin Guarini sold 57,000 copies of his self-titled debut and Diana DeGarmo moved 47,000 her first week out. Bo’s The Real Thing sold 225,000, and then there’s Clay’s Measure of a Man with his record-setting 613,000 units sold in the first week of release. Katharine’s staying power on the charts will depend on how well her single, “Over It,” does.
Daughtry takes third place this week, with almost 77,000 more copies sold in the album’s 11th week of release. The album was #8 on the Internet Album sales chart, #6 on the Digital chart, and #1 on Top Rock Albums.
Dreamgirls, featuring Jennifer Hudson, was #7 on the Billboard 200, #16 on the Internet Album sales chart, #1 on the Soundtracks chart, and #4 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The deluxe edition was #7 on the Billboard 200, #18 on the Internet Album sales chart, #6 on the Soundtracks chart, and #39 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums.
Another Idol-related CD, 2007 Grammy Nominees, which features Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” as well as Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” and K.T. Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” completes the Idol- related quartet in this week’s top ten. The album was #10 on the Billboard 200 and #10 on the Compilations chart.
Totally Country 6, which features Carrie Underwood’s “Some Hearts,” debuted at #18 on the Billboard 200, #2 on the Compilation list, and #1 on the Country chart.
