Music world traumatized as Idol-free top 10 comes to pass
For the first time this calendar year, no Idols made the top 10 albums in Billboard, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In the week ending Dec. 31, 2006, Daughtry was at No. 11, topping the collective Idol presence. He's still the top Idol this week, but drops from No. 5 to 12, selling 54,000, down 22%, for a total of 2.72 million.
Five other former Idol finalists join him on the chart. Carrie falls 11-16, selling 40,000 (down 14%) for a total of 5.62 million, only a couple hundred thousand or so below Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway in the battle for all-time top-selling Idol album.
Elliott drops 41-62, selling 11,000, a 21% drop, and totaling 262,000. Bucky's right behind him, dropping 51-63 with 11,000 sold, just a 2% drop; his total is 164,000. Fantasia ends a winning streak of several weeks, dropping 65-97 after selling 7,700, 17% off her last week's total, for a total of 405,000. And Kellie falls 103-128, selling 6,000, 13% below last week; her total is 553,000.
Album sales for non-charting Idols, plus Idols' download stats, follow.
Katharine joined the legions of non-charting Idols while I was gone. She sold 2,500 this week, down from 3,500 the week before (her first off-chart week), and is at 336,000 now. She's still selling better than Taylor, who dropped to 1,400 this week (from 2,600) and has sold 686,000 in total. Kelly is still queen of the non-charters, selling 7,000 (which would have been good enough to put her at about No. 108 if she'd been eligible), down from 7,600, for a total of 5.8 million.
Paris sold 1,100, sharply down from 2,000 the previous week, and has sold 15,000 thus far. Kimberley Locke racked up 700 copies, down from 1,000, for a total of 11,000. Ruben sold 700 as well, down from 900, for a total of 228,000. And Clay sold 400, down from 500, and is at 513,000 in toto.
Meanwhile, the Idol album flow has not dried up. Mandisa has one called True Beauty coming soon; its leadoff single, Only the World, is No. 1 this week on the singles chart. (This estimable achievement was achieved with the rather feeble total of 2,000 singles sold, it should be noted. That's better than some recent No. 1 singles, at least -- some weeks it's taken just 500 sales to become No. 1 on this moribund chart.) And Ace is also soon to unleash an album. Those two will be the last of 2006's top nine to release an album; so far, Lisa, Kevin and Melissa haven't joined the crowd.
Speaking of crowds, Idols make up 7% (or 14) of the top 200 digital songs. Here they are:
12-7 last week Kelly/Never Again (58,000; 512,000 total): This underperforming single has probably done best in the download realm; half a million is a solid total. Radio has not been so fond of it, and it's been on the decline for a few weeks now, even before the album emerges.
15-8 Daughtry/Home (49,000; 718,000 total): Drops 24% and out of the top 10.
18-17 Carrie/Before He Cheats (45,000; 1.43 million total): The Carrie song that even people who hate country like; also, the Carrie song that even people who don't know American Idol like. There's something about bashing a car with a baseball bat that must appeal to all Americans.
29-25 Elliott/Wait for You (32,000; 213,000 total): Elliott sells 2% more downloads than the previous week, but takes an unlucky downward chart bounce.
39-9 Blake/You Give Love a Bad Name (25,000; 156,000 total): In the three chart weeks since I've been gone, Jordin's This Is My Now won the first showdown with Blake, 74,000 to 70,000 and No. 9 to No. 11. Blake flipped the switch last week, winning the sales battle 60,000 to 54,000 and the chart war 9 to 14. This week they both nosedive, though Blake is still outselling Jordin.
49-14 Jordin/This Is My Now (20,000; 148,000 total): Drops 63% from last week (Blake dropped 58%, by the way). I wonder when (or if) they'll release it as a single in traditional trophy song fashion. It would certainly be able to outsell Mandisa.
52-42 Daughtry/It's Not Over (19,000; 1.31 million total): Still hanging in there.
84-73 Carrie/Wasted (12,000; 321,000 total): A solid seller but not in the league of Cheats or Jesus.
112-124 Bucky/Different World (8,600; 74,000 total): Finally, an upward-moving Idol track.
123-138 Fantasia/When I See U (8,100; 65,000 total): Fairly modest sales considering its radio success. But it's still trending upward.
135-123 Carrie/Jesus, Take the Wheel (7,500; 983,000 total): Three weeks away from a million at this pace.
143-102 Katharine/Over It (7,200; 441,000 total): Severe (30%) drop in downloads, but the song is still well ahead of the album.
151-166 Kellie/I Wonder (6,900; 81,000 total): Slight (2%) gain in sales.
174-167 Kelly/Since U Been Gone (6,300; 1.67 million total): Still the best-selling Idol download on the current chart. |
