KUALA LUMPUR: The national women’s doubles department has been further depleted following the departure of aspiring doubles player Haw Chiou Hwee.
Last week, Chiou Hwee, who showed great potential en route to winning the national title in Terengganu with Julia Wong in February, quit the 2010-12 Project citing personal reasons.
If she had stayed on, Chiou Hwee would have been in line for a promotion to the national squad under the guidance of Cheah Soon Kit.
Soon Kit admitted that there had been a lack of new talents in the women’s doubles department. In fact, no new faces have made the grade in the last three years.
“I have requested for new players to be roped in but until now there have not been any positive response. For now, we are only depending on (Chin) Eei Hui-(Wong) Pei Tty,” said Soon Kit.
Besides the top pair of Eei Hui-Pei Tty, the other players under his wings are Fong Chew Yen, Ooi Yu Hang, Mooi Hing Yau and Ooi Sock Ai.
Sock Ai is nursing an injury while another of his player, See Phui Leng, had quit the sport recently.
There had been high hopes that several Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) players, like Woon Khe Wei, Goh Liu Ying and Ng Hui Lin, would make their way into the national women’s doubles team but these players have instead been chosen to specialise in the mixed doubles events.
