James Wilson is anexciting youth prospect who continues to be fast-tracked on the road tosuccess, enjoying a remarkable two-goal Premier League debut in the final homegame of the campaign against Hull City. The fact the 18-year-old found the net did notsurprise seasoned watchers of a striker with blistering pace and a deadlyreputation in front of goal as his progress continues unabated. The centre-forward started the season captainingthe Under-18s, contributing some amazing strikes, and was the shining light inthe UEFA Youth League, leading from the front and inevitably top scoring forthe Reds. Following Will Keane’s loan exit, he stepped up to the Under-21s andthe goal output did not diminish, as he terrorised defenders with his sprintingprowess and clinical marksmanship. A first place on the senior bench came atNewcastle United, after he had been in the matchday squads against Aston Villaand Bayern Munich, as it became merely a matter of time before he made histop-flight bow. When the call came, from interim manager Ryan Giggs, he provedready to be unleashed and was the name on everybody’s lips after thewinagainst Steve Bruce’s Tigers. Unfortunately, injuries curtailed his impact at Under-21 level and he was withdrawn for thefinal four games of the campaign for Warren Joyce’s side, including in the 2-1final defeat against Chelsea at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, there is thedistinct impression the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award will be thefirst of many trophies for the England Under-19 hitman. At thestart of his fledgling career, Wilson even scored on his Under-18 debut as aschoolboy when hitting the net against Everton.Often played ahead of his agegroup, he was called up to England Schoolboys when still performing at Under-15level, the silky striker was scouted by United when only seven years old. Afterrecovering from a broken ankle that cruelly halted his progress, he was back intime to score a dramatic injury-time winner against Charlton Athletic in the FAYouth Cup quarter-final - surely the stuff of dreams to do so at Old Traffordat the tender age of 16. Eventhough he made 10 starts (and five substitute appearances), only three playersscored more thanthe sixstrikes he managed for the Under-18s and some of his finishes were top class, displaying composure and a real poacher's eye. Remarkably,he was handed an early taste of Reserves football when coming off the bench inthe fixture at West Bromwich Albion and, providing he stays injury-free andcontinues developing at youth level, there should be plenty to look forward tofor the Biddulph-born forward in terms of more opportunities at that level. Wilsonsigned professional forms on his 17th birthday towards the end of 2012 but hadto deal with injury issues throughout the campaign. Nevertheless, he was stilltop scorer and a final tally of 14 goals in 13 starts (five further appearancesoff the bench) demanded attention. Five ofthose strikes came in one memorable win at Newcastle, four inside the firsthalf and they were his first efforts of the league programme. After scouringthe record books, only Deiniol Graham's double hat-trick in an 8-2 thumping ofMarine Reserves in early 1990 outscores Wilson throughout Sir Alex Ferguson'sentire tenure at Old Trafford.Wilsonnudged his way into contention at Under-21 level and could find himselfinvolved for both age-groups in 2013/2014 if he continues to impress. He nettedin the Reserves' Manchester Senior Cup game at Bury and captained the Under-18swhile scoring and making goals with remarkable consistency. Bybecoming a regular for England Under-19s, it seemed obvious that his talentsare being appreciated further afield and he took to the UEFA Youth League likea duck to water, keeping up his fine scoring run and captaining Nicky Butt'steam. Thefirst-team involvement was just reward for an incredible campaign, illuminatedby a series of wonder strikes including a solo effort in the FA Youth Cup atBurnley, and also a hat-trick in the Under-21 win at Wolves' Molineux. If hecan shake off any injury niggles, a bright future beckons for the boy fromBiddulph.
