History and geography lessons minus exam stress Ministry introducing new syllabuses for lower secondary as part of review
Published on Feb 10, 2012
By Stacey Chia
THE Education Ministry (MOE) is starting a new syllabus for humanities subjects - one that will do away with the mid-term and year-end examinations at the lower secondary level.
Instead, students will have to do well in a variety of continual assessments and student investigations of historical and geographical case studies to prove that they are competent in the two subjects.
MOE said that these changes come as part of a review of the lower secondary geography and history syllabuses, to ensure that they are updated and relevant.
Background story
NEW SYLLABUS WELCOMED
'I have some students who don't find learning history relevant, but when I introduce hands-on activities in class, I notice that they want to explore more.'
History teacher Chong Kang Kang from Bedok Green Secondary School
'The time before a history or geography examination is usually spent just memorising facts.'
Secondary 2 Nan Chiau High School student Magdalene Low
Background story
WILL MISS EXAMS
'It's a pity, I actually enjoy studying history. It doesn't feel like just memory work to me.'
Don Chen from Clementi Town Secondary School
It is also part of MOE's Teach Less, Learn More approach, which encourages teachers to engage students and prepare them for life, rather than just exams.
Ms Tricia Seow, a lecturer at the National Institute of Education who was involved in the curriculum review, said that not having to sit the major exams allows students of different abilities to showcase their competencies.
'Some students understand the concepts but they are just not good at writing essays,' said Ms Seow, who used to be a geography teacher.
Teachers such as Ms Phyllis Pham, head of the department of humanities at Clementi Town Secondary School, said that replacing assessments such as the mid- and final-year exams makes learning such content-heavy subjects more meaningful.
It also ensures that students do not just memorise facts to sit exams.
'But we still need continual assessments to ensure that students still pick up content because they still have to sit the O levels,' Ms Pham said.
Mr Lim Biow Chuan, the MP for Mountbatten and chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education, said that while exams have a purpose in assessing a student's ability, too much emphasis on them may dampen the joy of learning.
The MOE said that the introduction of geographical investigation (GI) and historical investigation as assessment tools aims to help students build a strong foundation for knowledge and skills acquisition, and encourages them to take a self-directed approach to learning.
It requires students to work together to formulate questions based on a real issue or relevant topic before gathering data and evidence to find an answer.
Ms Pham explained that GI could involve taking students on excursions so that they can learn how to collect data on humidity and sunlight intensity in a real setting, rather than just learning from a textbook.
She said that through this, students also pick up social interaction skills as they have to work with their classmates.
History teacher Chong Kang Kang from Bedok Green Secondary School said he believes the new curriculum will help to engage students.
'I have some students who don't find learning history relevant, but when I introduce hands-on activities in class, I notice that they want to explore more,' he said.
The MOE said the pilot programme for the new curriculum will start this year in some schools.
It will be implemented in all schools from 2014.
Students and parents who spoke to The Straits Times welcomed the changes.
'The time before a history or geography examination is usually spent just memorising facts,' said Secondary 2 student Magdalene Low, 14, from Nan Chiau High School.
Madam Anita Rabi, 44, who has a daughter in Secondary 1, said that the change would allow students to spend more time studying for other subjects during the exam period.
However, some students such as Don Chen from Clementi Town Secondary School will miss sitting the history and geography examinations.
'It's a pity, I actually enjoy studying history. It doesn't feel like just memory work to me,' said the 13-year-old.

huoshiren 发表于 10-2-2012 11:27 AM
你说的有道理,是出问题的那个人考虑不周。
改写成:“Mrs. Tan had some chickens & ducks where the total quantity of chickens & ducks is 30.”
