那时马来亚半岛还是英殖民地,新加坡也还没独立。
The Stars
Malaysia has produced some of the biggest names in the game since those early and humble beginnings.
The late Wong Peng Soon, Datuk Eddy Choong, Ong Poh Lim, the Sidek siblings are just some of the few who have etched their names in the annals of badminton history.
The Sideks brothers – Razif and Jalani Sidek – were also innovators of their own. They introduced the S serve, which produced a wickedly erratic shuttle movement. So deceptive was the service that it caused such an uproar in the badminton world and was subsequently banned by the International Badminton Federation.
The women, though not as successful as the men, also produced their own stars, notable among them Roslind Singha Ang and Sylvia Ng.
In more than half a decade, the Thomas Cup remains the tournament that still sets the whole nation abuzz with excitement.
During the early days, Malaya were the undisputed kings of badminton, winning the coveted Cup three times in a row.
The legendary Wong Peng Soon was a member of the team that beat Denmark in the first Thomas Cup final, but he did not feature in the final. The Malayan players, who played pivotal roles in that final were the likes of Law Teik Hock, Ong Poh Lim, Ooi Teik Hock, Yeoh Teck Chye and Chan Kon Leong.
But Peng Soon was a major part of Malaya´s 7–2 win over the United States of America in Singapore in 1952. Making their winning debuts in the Thomas Cup were the likes of Abdullah Piruz and Ismail Marjan.
The trio of Peng Soon, Poh Lim and Teik Hock remain the only Malaysian to lift the Thomas Cup three times. Malaya won the Thomas Cup for the third time in a trot, defeating Denmark 8–1 in the 1955 final in Singapore. It was also the year that saw the emergence of Datuk Eddy Choong.
It will take almost another decade before Malaysia lay claim to the Thomas Cup again. The 1967 Thomas Cup was handed to Malaysia following crowd disturbance in Jakarta with Malaysia leading the 4–3 and the doubles match between Tan Yee Khan-Ng Boon Bee and Mulyadi-Agus Susanto level at 15–12, 13–18. |
