Focus Lumber to continue focus on quality
CHECK on any recreation vehicle (RV) in the US, and chances are that the interior could have come from Sabah-based downstream timber manufacturer Focus Lumber Bhd.
RV may not be as popular here as in the US but the extensive use of Focus Lumber's products in the RV market in the US is testament to the high quality plywood that the company produces.
The timber company, which is slated for a listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia, is a major plywood and veneer manufacturer with a mill in Keningau, Sabah. It started producing laminated veneer lumber (LVL) in March 2010.
Managing director Lin Fong Ming, a Taiwanese, speaking in Mandarin, says its plywood is a major contributor to group sales, with the company exporting most of its goods to the US and Asian markets.
The group has two major divisions, plywood production and the energy generation unit, Untung Ria Sdn Bhd. “In 2009, Focus Lumber controls a market share of 23.9% in the US market for total imports of plywood, veneered panel and similar laminated plywood from Malaysia,” executive director Lin Hao Wen tells StarBizWeek in an interview.
He adds that about 80% of its production is exported to some 40 countries including the US, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, China, India and Mexico.
Hao Wen says opportunities are vast in the overseas markets, especially in North America, Europe and Japan. The US market is the company's single largest export market and contributed 55.1% to group revenue for its financial year ended Dec 31, 2010 (FY10). Exports to Asia accounted for 30.27% of sales while Malaysia contributed 12.49% to revenue in FY10.
Hao Wen explains that the group's exports to the US in 2008 and 2009 dipped due to the economic slowdown in the country then but sales to the US have started to pick up again.
In FY07, 64.1% of its revenue were from the US, 46.16% in FY08 and 43.76% in FY09.
Asked if the company was excessively dependent on the US, he says Focus Lumber has been very proactive and that it employs an agile strategy that enables it to switch to other export destinations.
“For example in 2008 and 2009, the market in the US was not doing well due to the economic crisis and we shifted our focus on Asia. From 20.21% revenue contribution from Asia in FY07, we raised it to 30.27% in 2010,” Hao Wen says, adding that Focus Lumber could command a higher premium in the US market.
Sales and marketing head Yang Sen says its products are not limited for use in the production of a RV but can also used in other industries, including households for cabinets, panelling, flooring or furniture, thus providing a huge market for the company. He says the demand for hardwood plywood remains strong in the global market.
Yang says the company does not compromise on its quality and in fact has customers knocking on its door due to its product quality.
“Our plywood is environmentally friendly. We are the first Malaysian plywood mill company certified as a CARB (California Air Resources Board) Certified Manufacturer by the US Professional Service Industries. We are awarded with the JAS certificate by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan for our quality plywood,” he says.
Yang says Japan practices stringent quality control and the JAS certificate is like a “ticket” to enter the Japan market.
With the certificate, Focus Lumber can easily expand in Japan.
He says one of Focus' competitive strengths is its track record and relationship with customers.
For FY10, Focus Lumber posted a net profit of RM10.2mil on revenue of RM120.4mil. Its gross profit margin has been consistently above 20% from FY07 and in FY10, it was 26.31%.
Plywood contributed RM114.6mil or 95.19% of its revenue in FY10, veneer (3.75%) and LVL (1.01%).
Currently, Focus Lumber cannot produce enough to meet the demand. Going forward the company is investing RM12mil in machinery to improve efficiency.
The company is unperturbed over the excess demand for its products, as this will enable them to pick and choose their customers.
Focus Lumber is tentatively expected to be listed on April 28. It is issuing to the public six million new shares as well as 900,000 new shares to its eligible employees and vendors at 60 sen a share.
Another 5.3 million new shares will be placed out to bumiputra investors approved by the International Trade and Industry Ministry at 60 sen per share.
