BiotechCorp opens new satellite office in Penang
The Star, April 2, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Biotechnology Corp (BiotechCorp) has opened a new satellite office in Penang and is confident of attracting more investments in the bio-based industry in the northern region.
“Announcements of international and local companies that have decided to invest in the bio-based field in the northern region are expected to multiply the potential of the regional bio-based industry.
“Penang houses the second-largest medical devices industry in our country, so setting up the satellite office is the most strategic step towards a more conducive ecosystem and facilitating opportunities for the investor and the industry,” said chief executive officer Mohd Nazlee Kamal in a statement.
“Looking at the local medical services market size of US$808mil in 2011, we hope to streamline and coordinate project implementations.”
The satellite office, located at the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) Biotech Centre, represented BiotechCorp's commitment to support the Biotechnology Transformation Programme and facilitate the country's bio-based industry, Nazlee said.
He said the rapid development of the biotechnology industry in the northern region had spurred the growth of biotechnology centres like the NCER Biotech Centre and Penang Science Park, creating the right ecosystem for the industry to flourish.
BiotechCorp is the lead development agency for the biotech industry in Malaysia. It acts as a central contact point, providing support, facilitation and advisory services for biotech and life sciences companies. - Bernama

Frepenca expects orders for semiconductors and electronics to pick up in Q2
The Star, March 25, 2013
By David Tan

GEORGE TOWN: The Free Industrial Zone, Penang, Companies' Association's (Frepenca) expects orders to pick up for its members in the second quarter of 2013.
The Frepenca companies, comprising 65 local firms and multinational corporations from the United States and Europe, are involved in the semiconductor and electronics industries.
President Heng Huck Lee said orders for the second quarter had started to arrive in March for its members that are supporting the smartphone and tablet market segment.
“The signs of recovery are here, showing thsat the second quarter will improve over first quarter 2013. Members getting the orders are involved in the manufacturing of radio frequency (RF) chips, sensor integrated circuits (ICs), logic chips, display driver ICs, power management chips, memory modules and timing devices used in smartphones and tablets.
“The book-to-bill ratio for most of our members has also returned to one and above, which is consistent with the book-to-bill ratio of North America, recently announced by SEMI,” he added.
North America-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted US$1.09bil (RM3.39bil) in orders worldwide in January 2013 (three-month average basis) and a book-to-bill ratio of 1.14, according to the January Book-to-Bill Report published by SEMI, the global industry association serving the nano and micro-electronic manufacturing supply chains, comprising 2,000 member companies.
A book-to-bill ratio of above one indicates more orders being received than filled, showing a strong market where demand outpaces supply. A book-to-bill ratio of below one indicates weaker demand. The book-to-bill ratio of September 2012 was 0.81.
Heng said the demand for printed circuit boards or PCBs and logic chips used in the computing segment was still down.
“Our members have no plans to engage more headcount, but have put in place plans to introduce new products and innovative production technologies,” he said.
The Frepenca, had in January 2013, projected a flat first quarter 2013 against the previous year's corresponding period.
According to US-based research house Gartner, the number of smartphones and tablets purchased is expected to jump from 821 million in 2012 to 1.2 billion in 2013, as more of these devices invade workplaces around the globe.
Some 56% of smartphones purchased by businesses in North America and Europe would be Google Android devices in 2016, up from 34% in 2012.
Meanwhile, Globetronics Technology Bhd, which manufactures sensor chips and timing devices for smartphones and tablets, would spend more on development and design work this year.
Heng, who is also Globetronics chief executive officer, said this year, the group would spend 2% of its revenue for development and design work, compared to 1% previously, to produce new technological products.
“These products would be used to enhance the features and applications of smartphones and tablets,” he said.
Globetronics' light-emitting-diode (LED) chip, sensor ICs and timing devices business generates about 80% of its revenue.
Mini-Circuits Technologies, one of the companies supporting the smartphone and tablet segment, meanwhile, expects a 5% growth for first quarter 2013 over the fourth quarter of 2012.
Chairman and president Datuk Seri Kelvin Kiew said if not for the orders from the smartphone and tablet segments, the group would have experienced a flat quarter.
The company was now supplying the next generation of high-speed RF integrated circuits that could transmit data over a long distance to a major US smartphone and tablet brand name.
Besides RF chips, the company has just developed a prototype test fixture device to check the reliability and functionality of tablets.
“We expect to commence mass production at the Penang plant soon,” Kiew said.
The fourth quarter of 2012 has been described by Kiew as the worst quarter since 2009, when the subprime crisis peaked.
Kiew said second quarter 2013 would be telling.
Mini-Circuits ships 70% to 80% of its RF products directly to the US for use in the development of 4G telecommunications infrastructure, and the remainder to MNCs in China.
“If there is no pick-up in the second quarter, then the year 2013 can be expected to be flat,” he said.
abcde Corp Bhd executive chairman C.B. Chuah, said more than 50% of the revenue for first quarter 2013 would be generated from the sales of test equipment used in the smartphone and tablet segment.
“This is why we would experience slight growth this first quarter over the fourth quarter of 2012.
“About 40% of our products are shipped directly to the US market, 30% to the MNCs in China, and another 30% to the MNCs in Asia Pacific,” he shared.
Chuah said the group had, in late 2012, secured orders for its test equipment used for handling and testing micro-electro-mechanical sensors or MEMS, timing device chips and LED used in smartphones and tablets.
