He said the world No. 1 player's endeavour to fulfil the hopes of the country was clearly shown during the final match held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Sunday.
"Chong Wei has shown a performance that is full of spirit and I hope he will not give up because he is the country's best hope to win a gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
"He (Chong Wei) has told me, he is not quitting yet and, after this, I have asked him to concentrate on the Asian Games, which will be held soon," he told reporters after attending an aerobics programme in Tasik Titiwangsa here on Monday.
After playing brilliantly for the last few days, Chong Wei lost his sharpness and went down 19-21, 19-21 to Chen Long of China in a 69-minute men’s singles final at the World Championships in Bellarup Super Arena.
It was his eighth attempt to get his act right but with another defeat, Malaysia’s chase for a world title continues.
Malaysia has never won the title since the tournament’s inception in 1977.
It was his third final appearance in the World Championships after losing in the last two finals against Lin Dan in 2011 at Wembley and 2013 in Guangzhou.
Ironically, Chong Wei has also never beaten Chen Long on Danish soil – having lost to the lanky Chinese in the finals of the 2011 and 2013 Denmark Opens.
It now puts the record between them at 9-9.
